Windows 11’s built-in controls can move routine update restarts out of your broadcast, but no single setting guarantees that a PC will never restart during a 24/7 stream. Set active hours, schedule required restarts for an accepted maintenance window, and use update pausing only as a temporary buffer. OBS automatic reconnect can help after a connection drop; it does not prevent Windows from restarting.
Set Windows 11 to avoid restarting during your broadcast
Active hours tell Windows when to avoid automatic restarts. They are a restart-timing control, not a 24/7 lockout. Windows labels and available options may vary by version and device.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Set the hours to cover your stream as far as the available schedule allows. For a round-the-clock broadcast, a daily active-hours window may leave some hours uncovered.
- Check Windows Update before a long broadcast. If an update requires a restart, use its Schedule the restart control and choose a maintenance time before going live or during an interruption you can accept.
- Monitor update status rather than assuming the stream is protected. Microsoft describes active hours as controlling when automatic restarts happen, not as a guarantee against every update-related interruption. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains the available controls.
Use Pause updates only as a short-term buffer
To defer updates temporarily, open Settings > Windows Update > Pause updates and choose an end date. Microsoft’s current guidance allows a pause of up to 35 days from the current date. During the pause, updates that require a restart are not downloaded or installed. When the pause ends, Windows checks for and installs the latest available updates. It does not permanently turn off automatic updates. See Microsoft’s pause guidance.
A pause can help you protect a planned broadcast window, but it is not a substitute for scheduling maintenance or keeping the system updated. Pick an end date you can monitor and plan a restart afterward.

Know what the other controls actually do

Understand Windows 11’s newer restart behavior
In an article published August 14, 2026, Microsoft described a gradual Windows 11 rollout that combines selected restart-requiring updates with the monthly security update for one restart. Starting with updates released on and after July 28, 2026, this applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. The combined updates can include drivers, .NET, and firmware, and Microsoft says the restart is scheduled outside active hours whenever possible.

This change reduces some restart interruptions; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Microsoft says critical or expedited drivers, emergency or out-of-band updates, Defender security intelligence updates, and AI component updates are not held for the combined monthly restart, and combined updates will not be held indefinitely. Configure OBS for connection recovery
- Open OBS Studio’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and use it to establish a baseline suited to your computer hardware and network conditions.
- Review the streaming setup and Automatic Reconnect option in OBS. It is a recovery layer for a dropped stream connection, not a Windows update control.
- Test the setup before relying on it for a long broadcast. OBS recommends testing the stream configuration; its documentation does not promise that OBS will reopen a YouTube stream automatically after a full PC restart. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Build a maintenance plan for a continuous stream
- Choose a maintenance window when a restart will least affect viewers, and schedule required restarts there.
- Check Windows Update status before a long stream; do not treat active hours or a pause as proof that the PC cannot restart.
- Keep OBS reconnect configured and tested for stream connection drops, while planning separately for a PC restart.
- Do not rely on Do not disturb to prevent an update. It affects notification visibility only.
Microsoft and OBS do not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation from any one setting. The practical approach is to reduce avoidable restarts and have a recovery plan for the interruptions that remain.
