Short answer: FFmpeg can map multiple audio streams into an output, but YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS live-stream guidance does not confirm that two language tracks sent in one stream will remain selectable for viewers. Don’t rely on an FFmpeg command alone to create a live language selector. For a recorded video, YouTube documents adding alternate-language audio tracks in Studio.
Can FFmpeg send two selectable languages to a YouTube live stream?
That capability is not established by the official documentation covered here. FFmpeg’s -map option can select multiple streams for an output, including audio streams; that only describes what FFmpeg puts into its output. It does not prove YouTube Live will accept those tracks, preserve their language metadata, or expose an audio-track choice to viewers. See the FFmpeg documentation.
YouTube’s published encoder setup and live settings explain how to connect an encoder and which audio codecs and settings to use. They do not provide a recipe for sending two selectable language tracks over one RTMP/RTMPS live ingest. That is an evidence limit, not proof that YouTube categorically rejects every such configuration. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live encoder settings.
Accordingly, there is no responsible FFmpeg command to give as a confirmed way to make viewers choose between two languages on a YouTube live stream. Mapping two audio streams may be valid FFmpeg syntax, but it should not be presented as a working YouTube Live language-selection solution without confirmation of a currently supported ingest method.

What YouTube documents for live audio
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs for live streams. Its advanced recommendations specify 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo, or 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1 surround. YouTube says 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. These are audio encoding settings—not instructions for multiple language tracks.
To connect an encoder, YouTube’s setup instructions direct creators to enter the live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it, share it, or include a real key in a command or screenshot. Use the current key shown in your own YouTube live setup.

How to add selectable languages to a recorded video
For recorded content, YouTube documents a separate multi-language audio workflow. In YouTube Studio on a desktop, add a language to the video and upload an audio-only file for that language. YouTube says the audio should be roughly the same length as the video. The feature is currently available to creators who have access to Advanced features. The creator must supply the dub or arrange for it to be made; this workflow does not automatically translate or create the audio.
- Open YouTube Studio on a desktop and select the recorded video.
- Open the video’s language or subtitle settings and add the relevant language.
- Upload the corresponding audio-only track, checking that its duration aligns roughly with the video.
- Save the changes, then check the published video’s player for the available audio-track choice.
Exact Studio labels can change. Follow the current controls in your account if the wording differs. YouTube describes this feature for videos and Shorts, including new and previously uploaded videos; it is not a live RTMP workaround. Details are in YouTube’s multi-language audio help page.

YouTube’s viewer help explains how to choose an available audio track on supported videos, but does not say an FFmpeg-mapped RTMP stream will present that menu. See YouTube’s viewer instructions.
If the event must be understood in two languages
If listeners need to choose a language during a live event, verify the ingest and viewer experience directly with YouTube before building the production around two audio streams. The official pages cited above do not establish a selectable dual-language FFmpeg RTMP path. If the content can be published as a recording, the documented Studio audio-track workflow is the supported option described here. YouTube also notes that creators can make the additional dub themselves or outsource dubbing; that produces a recorded-video track, not a live-stream workaround.
