They are different systems, and neither should be assumed to hot-reload safely. For an OBS VLC list, schedule changes for a controlled transition or test a playlist tool that explicitly supports live edits. For HLS, keep the manifest and referenced segments consistent.
First identify which playlist you are editing
In OBS, inspect the source type and the file being changed. A VLC Video source is a list of media items; an HLS playlist is a protocol manifest that points to media segments. A filename ending in .m3u8 is a useful clue, but confirm how the source and encoder use it. The word “playlist” alone does not tell you which reload rules apply.

Safely changing an OBS VLC Video playlist
OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow. Its documented settings include looping, shuffling, visibility behavior, and network caching; they do not establish an atomic live-reload procedure for an externally edited playlist. If your current item restarts or playback stops after a change, do not assume another edit method will preserve its position.
Use a controlled transition with the built-in source
- Save a copy of the current playlist and your OBS scene collection before changing production settings.
- Make the list change at a planned transition, rather than while an item must continue uninterrupted.
- Confirm that every path in the revised list is valid and that each media file opens in the configured source.
- Test the revised list in a non-production scene or stream and observe whether the current item restarts, playback pauses, or the new list takes effect only after a transition.
If uninterrupted editing is essential, an OBS resource called Media Playlist Source says it can apply playlist edits without restarting the video, including when entries are reordered. That is a third-party plugin claim, not a built-in OBS guarantee. Check compatibility with your installed OBS and related software, retain a backup, and validate the behavior before relying on it for a 24/7 broadcast.

Safely updating an HLS manifest
HLS is not just a list of video filenames. A media playlist identifies segments that a client fetches. RFC 8216 says an HLS client must periodically reload a media playlist to learn about new segments, and it describes continuity checks after reload. In practice, do not remove or rename segments still referenced by an active manifest unless you understand how the server and receiving player handle that change. Exact file replacement mechanics depend on those components.
If FFmpeg generates the manifest, inspect the playlist type and output mode before editing the file manually. FFmpeg documents EVENT playlists as append-only and VOD playlists as unchanging. If a live output is being treated as one of these types, the appropriate correction may be to change how the manifest is generated, not to edit it in place.

When YouTube is receiving HLS
YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements apply only when your encoder sends HLS to YouTube; they are not a fix for a local OBS VLC playlist that restarts. For YouTube HLS ingestion, use TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Check the ingestion configuration separately from any local playback playlist.
Troubleshoot the stop without guessing
- The active video restarts after editing a list of file paths: You are likely changing an OBS VLC playlist. OBS does not document a live edit process that preserves playback position. Restore the saved list if needed, then move the change to a controlled transition or test a compatible playlist implementation that claims live-edit support.
- The source fails after a manifest change: Check that the manifest entries still identify available segments and that the client can reload the updated playlist. The exact cause depends on the HLS server and player; avoid deleting segments still referenced by the active playlist.
- An FFmpeg-generated playlist cannot be safely modified: Check whether its type is
EVENTorVOD. The former is append-only and the latter is unchanging, so review the output mode before attempting a manual edit. - YouTube rejects or loses an HLS feed: Verify the YouTube-specific segment duration, HTTPS method, and outstanding-segment limit. These constraints concern HLS ingestion, not OBS local-file playlist playback.
- The source type or failure is unclear: Identify whether OBS is using VLC Video, Media Source, or another pipeline, and whether the edited file is a local-media list or an HLS manifest. Without that information, there is no reliable single reload sequence.
