“Walz was only qualified to become some sort of vice president,” Stephen Colbert joked after Donald Trump drew a distinction between Tim Walz being an “assistant coach” and a “coach.” The punchline landed during The Late Show’s live coverage of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
What did Colbert say about Walz being an assistant coach?
Colbert turned Trump’s wording into a joke about the vice presidency: if Walz was an assistant coach rather than a head coach, Colbert quipped, then he was qualified for a position like vice president. The joke made Trump’s correction sound like an accidental endorsement.
The Independent’s August 23, 2024 report quotes Colbert saying: “Oh my god…of course, he was an assistant coach. You know what that means? Walz was only qualified to become some sort of vice president, if you think about it, good catch… good catch.” A Mashable report syndicated by Yahoo gives a shorter rendering of the line.
What did Trump post about Tim Walz?
As quoted by The Independent, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Walz was an ASSISTANT coach, not a COACH.” Colbert’s response was aimed at that distinction—not a serious assessment of Walz’s coaching résumé or qualifications for office.

The reports establish the post’s wording and the joke’s context, but do not settle the precise details of Walz’s coaching duties. The distinction is best understood here as Trump’s framing and the setup for Colbert’s punchline.
When and where did the exchange happen?
The joke aired Thursday, August 22, 2024, on the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, after Kamala Harris’s acceptance speech. Colbert was broadcasting live from the convention. The Independent reported that Trump posted more than 50 times during Harris’s 38-minute speech; that figure is the outlet’s account of the broader live-posting context, not a necessary part of the joke itself.
