Yes. Stephen Colbert is co-writing a new Lord of the Rings film, currently using the working title The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. He is writing it with his son, screenwriter Peter McGee, and Lord of the Rings screenwriter Philippa Boyens. The announced story follows Sam, Merry, Pippin and Sam’s daughter Elanor fourteen years after Frodo’s passing.
What is Shadow of the Past about?
Warner Bros. and New Line describe the film as a story set fourteen years after Frodo’s passing. Sam, Merry and Pippin retrace the first steps of their earlier adventure, while Elanor uncovers a long-buried secret about why the War of the Ring nearly was lost. The title is a working title, not a confirmed final title. Warner Bros. and New Line’s announcement is the source for the title and official premise.
The announced setup joins a new framing story involving Elanor and the older hobbits with material drawn from the beginning of Tolkien’s novel. It does not establish that the film will adapt those chapters verbatim, or confirm which specific scenes will appear on screen.
Why is Colbert involved, and what book material inspired the story?
Colbert said his idea grew from six early chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring that were not developed in Peter Jackson’s first film. The Associated Press reported him describing how he kept returning to those chapters and asking whether a story could be “completely faithful to the books” while also faithful to the films already made. He developed the idea with Jackson and Boyens. The Associated Press report carries Colbert’s comments.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes the project a bridge between Tolkien’s early material and a later story about the characters after Frodo’s passing—not simply a direct screen version of six chapters.
Who is making the film?
- Writers: Stephen Colbert, Peter McGee and Philippa Boyens.
- Returning creative team: Peter Jackson is involved. The earlier announcement identifies Jackson, Fran Walsh, Boyens and Zane Weiner as working on the first of the two announced upcoming films, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum; it does not establish current production timing for Shadow of the Past. The two-film announcement provides that context.
Is the Colbert film paused, and when will it come out?
As of October 8, 2026, the project was reported to remain in development, but its schedule is unsettled. An October 5 report said Warner Bros. responded that the film was still in development while also describing separate reporting that it had encountered development delays. The pause claim is therefore disputed, not confirmation of a halt or cancellation. No confirmed shoot date, budget or release date was established in that reporting. The October 5 status report explains the conflicting accounts.
