He acknowledged that he felt the same, thanked the people gathered in the studio and watching at home, and then turned to satire about the result and the next presidential term.
Colbert began with sympathy, not a punchline
The election was held on November 5. In the opening of the November 6 episode, Colbert addressed viewers directly rather than beginning with a joke about the outcome. TV Insider’s November 7 excerpt of the monologue records him saying: “Hey there. How you doing? If you watch this show regularly, I’m guessing you’re not doing great.”
He then described being told that it was unfortunate he had to host a show that night. His response was that he did not have to do it; he got to do it. The distinction framed the broadcast as something he wanted to share with the audience, not simply an obligation. TV Insider’s excerpt and report reproduces the passage.
He thanked the people watching and making the show
Colbert connected the live audience, the show’s crew and viewers at home through the idea of being together after a difficult result. “At times like this, what do we most want to be? Not alone. So, thanks for being here,” he said, according to TV Insider’s excerpt.

He also offered a wry account of why people might be equipped to face hard times: “I’ll let you in on a little secret — no one gets into this business because everything in their life worked out great. So we’re built for rough roads.” The line used the experience of working in entertainment to make a point about resilience without pretending that the election had not upset him.
Then the monologue shifted to political satire
After the direct address, Colbert moved into jokes and criticism about Trump’s win and what might follow. In one excerpt, he summed up the outcome with the censored phrase “Well, f***… it happened. Again,” before describing the campaign and acknowledging Trump’s victory.

He contrasted Trump’s first election with the second: “The first time Trump was elected, he started as a joke and ended as a tragedy. This time, he starts as a tragedy; who knows what he’ll end as. A limerick? There once was a man who was orange… damn it!” The limerick turn makes the uncertainty part of the joke; it is Colbert’s satirical reaction, not a factual prediction about the coming term.

How the address fit the late-night reaction
Colbert’s opening combined an expression of personal disappointment with a gesture of solidarity, before returning to the political comedy expected of the show. A November 12 account by Le Monde placed his response among late-night hosts reacting to Trump’s victory and characterized it as shocked, sarcastic and political. That broader framing helps distinguish the opening’s consoling tone from the sharper satire that followed: Le Monde’s account of late-night reactions.
