SRS vs Nginx RTMP for a YouTube 24/7 Streaming Server

SRS offers broader documented protocol and conversion options; Nginx RTMP documents push and pull relay. Neither is proven more reliable, so choose by your relay needs and operating plan.

Choose SRS if your relay needs broader documented protocol and conversion options; choose Nginx RTMP if its RTMP push/pull relay model fits and you already operate Nginx. Neither choice is proven more reliable, faster, or simpler by the available comparative evidence. For a 24/7 YouTube channel, continuity depends on the whole system—video source, host, network, process supervision, monitoring, and YouTube ingest—not just the relay software.

What each server does in a YouTube streaming setup

SRS and Nginx RTMP sit between an encoder or video source and YouTube. They do not replace YouTube: your server must send an ingest stream in a format YouTube accepts. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension of RTMP, for live ingest. YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS among the supported protocols.

This comparison is about the documented capabilities of the projects, not a controlled test of continuous operation. The cited sources do not establish a winner for throughput, availability, or ease of deployment.

SRS vs Nginx RTMP: the practical differences

Decision point SRS Nginx RTMP
Documented role Media server with RTMP, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT, MPEG-DASH, and GB28181 listed in its introduction. Nginx module whose project page documents RTMP stream relay.
Relay and conversion Documentation describes converting inputs such as RTMP or SRT to HLS, HTTP-FLV, or WebRTC. See the SRS v6 introduction. The project page describes push and pull relay models and multi-worker live streaming. See the Nginx RTMP module project.
When it may fit Consider it when protocol conversion or additional delivery formats are part of the design, rather than only forwarding to YouTube. Consider it when the documented relay patterns match the design and your team already manages Nginx.
Comparative reliability, speed, and simplicity Not established by the cited documentation. Not established by the cited documentation.

Protocol breadth is not proof that SRS is more reliable or easier to run. Likewise, familiarity with Nginx is an operational consideration, not evidence that its module performs better. If the server will also deliver video to a separate audience, distinguish that workload from sending the stream to YouTube: SRS documents HLS and other delivery options, while YouTube handles playback for viewers watching on YouTube. HLS is not required just to send an RTMP(S) feed to YouTube.

How to choose for a 24/7 channel

  • Choose by required path: write down what sends the source, what protocol the relay receives, and what protocol YouTube will receive. If you need conversion or other delivery formats, assess SRS’s documented protocol list against the exact requirement. If straightforward RTMP relay is sufficient, assess the Nginx RTMP push or pull model.
  • Choose by operational ownership: account for which service your team can configure, monitor, update, and recover. Familiarity can reduce operational friction, but does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
  • Evaluate failure handling before going live: document how the source is restored, how the relay process is supervised and restarted, what alerts indicate a problem, and who responds. Test those procedures in the actual deployment; neither project’s feature list alone proves a complete recovery plan.
  • Separate relay from transcoding: if the server only forwards an already encoded stream, that is a different workload from transcoding video or serving additional viewers. Work out compute, network, and storage needs from the real design; the cited sources do not establish a universal host size.
  • Check the chosen version’s own instructions: SRS documentation is versioned, and its v6 introduction identifies v6.0 as stable while also containing a development-status note. Do not mix commands or configuration from different versions. The cited Nginx RTMP project page does not establish a current release cadence, supported Nginx versions, or a ready-made high-availability recipe.

Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s ingest guidance

The relay does not remove the need to meet YouTube’s encoder requirements. Its current guidance recommends RTMPS, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; check the live table for the exact combination you use. As one specific reference point, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not comparative performance results for SRS or Nginx RTMP. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring the source.

Bandwidth and stream health

Plan upload capacity for the total outgoing stream bitrate and leave headroom: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth 20% above the total bitrate. This is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee against outages. Test the feed before relying on it and watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and bandwidth planning.

Build an operating plan, not just a relay

  1. Keep the source continuous. Decide what happens when a file ends, a playlist runs out, or the source encoder stops. Confirm that the source and relay reconnect behavior work together.
  2. Make the host and network resilient enough for your use. Track process state, network connectivity, and whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Set alerts and identify who will act on them.
  3. Test recovery deliberately. In a controlled test, interrupt the source and verify the expected restart or reconnect behavior at each layer. The cited project feature descriptions do not establish that either server automatically recovers every failure.
  4. Decide how archives will be created. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not promise one archived video for an uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours. If an archive matters, check YouTube’s current limits and plan local recording or deliberate stream segmentation. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  5. Check rights and platform rules for the programming. A technically healthy relay does not establish that the content is eligible to stream or remain available. Make sure you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization rules for your channel and material.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to inspect Practical next check
YouTube does not receive a stream Ingest destination, stream key, protocol, or outbound connection. Confirm the YouTube event’s ingest details and key, verify the relay is sending RTMP/RTMPS to the intended destination, then check the server logs and Live Control Room.
The stream starts but health is poor or playback buffers Encoder settings or insufficient upload headroom. Check codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution-specific bitrate, and available upload capacity against YouTube’s current guidance.
The channel stops after a source interruption Reconnect behavior and process supervision across the source and relay. Reproduce the interruption in a test, identify which process failed to resume, and configure and verify its restart or alert procedure.
A long continuous broadcast has no single expected archive YouTube’s archive behavior for streams beyond the documented under-12-hour case. Do not assume one automatic archive for a stream longer than 12 hours; plan local recording or segmentation if needed.
Configuration instructions do not match the installed software Version mismatch. Use documentation for the exact SRS version or Nginx/module combination deployed; do not transplant version-specific commands without checking them.
