The office said deputies reasonably perceived a lethal threat; the Ely family disputed key parts of the deputies’ account. A federal jury later found for the county and the deputies in the family’s civil-rights lawsuit, a separate proceeding.
What happened at the Ely home
On October 15, 2019, sheriff’s deputies responded to a family emergency at the Ely home in Hope Ranch, Santa Barbara County. Authorities found Valerie Lundeen Ely dead inside the home. Cameron Ely was later shot by deputies outside. Contemporaneous reporting said she had multiple stab wounds. Noozhawk’s account of the incident reported these events.
Why the district attorney called the shooting justifiable
On October 6, 2020, the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office published an officer-involved shooting report concerning Cameron Pierce Ely. The county’s officer-involved shooting report archive lists the report under his name and gives its date.
According to contemporaneous accounts of the DA’s reasoning, deputies believed Cameron had recently stabbed his mother, said he had a gun, and moved or gestured as though drawing one. The office concluded that, given what deputies said they perceived at the time, they reasonably believed he posed a risk of death or serious injury and that deadly force was necessary. The Santa Barbara Independent quoted the report’s conclusion: “Therefore, the shooting of Cameron Pierce Ely is a justifiable homicide.” The Independent’s October 6, 2020 report described the finding and rationale.

Cameron was unarmed when he was shot, according to reporting on the DA’s conclusion. That fact does not mean the DA found a gun had been recovered: the stated justification concerned the threat deputies said they perceived, not proof that he actually had a weapon. The Los Angeles Times’ account reported the unarmed status alongside the office’s explanation.
What the family disputed
Ron Ely and other family members challenged the deputies’ account and alleged that Cameron was attempting to surrender with his hands raised. They also disputed what the recording of the encounter captured. A contemporaneous report said Cameron’s voice was not audible on the recording and that it did not reflect some commands and statements described in the deputies’ account. Those are reported claims about the recording and the family’s allegations, not a settled reconstruction of every moment before the shooting. The Los Angeles Times reported on the family’s challenge and the recording.

How the DA review differs from the civil jury verdict
The DA’s 2020 determination and the family’s later civil-rights case were different legal processes, with different decision-makers and questions. The DA’s office reviewed the deputies’ use of deadly force and concluded it was justified. In October 2022, a federal jury returned a verdict in favor of Santa Barbara County, the Sheriff’s Office, and four deputies in the family’s civil-rights lawsuit. Noozhawk reported the verdict on October 20, 2022. Its account of the civil case describes the outcome.
The jury verdict was a civil outcome, not a criminal conviction of Cameron, and it should not be treated as proof that every disputed detail was resolved in the DA’s favor. The DA’s phrase “justifiable homicide” described its conclusion about the deputies’ use of force.
