To run Restreamer continuously on an Ubuntu VPS, deploy its Docker container with persistent configuration and data, secure the management interface, connect a working video input, and publish to YouTube using the current RTMPS URL and stream key. A restart policy helps recover a stopped container; it does not guarantee 24/7 service. Your source, server resources, outbound network, YouTube ingest, and monitoring all matter.
How the setup works—and what Restreamer needs to stream
The basic path is video input → Restreamer on your VPS → YouTube Live. Restreamer is a self-hosted streaming server distributed as a Docker image, and its official Linux installation documentation lists Ubuntu as supported. The official guide also specifies a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU. Restreamer Linux installation
Decide what Restreamer will receive before configuring YouTube. The input might be an existing stream or a media feed. The steps below do not assume a particular camera, OBS setup, or file playlist: the source must be available to Restreamer, and its configuration depends on that source.
Your VPS is the persistent host for the Restreamer process and its connection to YouTube. Docker makes deployment convenient, but neither a container nor a VPS alone ensures an uninterrupted broadcast. You need a functioning input, adequate sustained outbound bandwidth, suitable CPU capacity if transcoding is involved, and a recovery and monitoring plan.

Choose an Ubuntu VPS for the actual workload
The cited Restreamer documentation does not prescribe a universal VPS size, and no particular provider or plan is established here. Estimate resources from the input and output you intend to run, then test under the real workload rather than treating an arbitrary minimum as a guarantee.
- Docker and architecture: confirm the provider permits Docker and that the server meets Restreamer’s documented 64-bit Intel or AMD requirement.
- Outbound network: check sustained upload capacity and the provider’s transfer allowance against your stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; this is YouTube guidance, not a guarantee about a VPS plan. YouTube streaming tips
- CPU and memory: account for whether the chosen workflow passes through a compatible feed or requires transcoding. The cited sources do not establish a specific CPU or memory minimum.
- Storage and backups: allow for Restreamer’s persistent state and any local recordings you choose to keep. Back up configuration securely; do not store stream keys in a public repository or expose them in logs.
- Network and security controls: make sure you can restrict inbound ports and protect the administration interface. Consider server region and provider support as operational factors, not evidence of streaming performance.
Install Docker and launch Restreamer with persistent storage
Install Docker using Docker’s current Ubuntu instructions, then follow the current Restreamer Linux guide and project repository for the image name, launch syntax, and ports. These details can change between releases, so do not treat an older command copied from a third-party tutorial as authoritative. The project’s example uses bind-mounted configuration and data directories, such as /opt/restreamer/config and /opt/restreamer/data, and a Docker restart policy such as --restart=always. Its example maps ports 8080 and 8181 for web access, 1935 and 1936 for RTMP-related use, and UDP 6000 for SRT. Verify the current release’s requirements before opening ports: map and expose only traffic your chosen input and output actually need, and restrict access in the VPS firewall.
Persistent mounts keep configuration and data outside the disposable container layer. A restart policy asks Docker to restart the container when it stops; it cannot repair a broken input, exhausted transfer allowance, host failure, network outage, or YouTube-side interruption. Keep a separate, protected backup of important configuration.

Secure Restreamer before exposing it to the internet
Set a strong, unique administrative password. If you need remote administration, protect the web interface with HTTPS and access controls rather than assuming that YouTube’s RTMPS connection protects the Restreamer interface. YouTube RTMPS encrypts the outbound connection to YouTube; it does not secure your VPS administration page or an exposed public RTMP input. YouTube: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS
Be especially careful with public RTMP ingest. Restreamer’s RTMP ingest guide warns that an exposed port 1935 can allow anyone to push streams to the server. It includes a token example, but the guide is legacy documentation: confirm the correct token configuration for the Restreamer version you actually run before relying on it. Prefer restricting inbound access to known sources when practical, and do not leave unused ingest ports open. Restreamer RTMP ingest guide

Connect a source and publish to YouTube Live
- Open Restreamer’s management interface using the address and port configured for your deployment. Sign in with the unique password you set. The exact labels and screen layout may vary by release.
- Configure the video input that matches your source. Confirm that Restreamer receives a stable feed and that its codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio are compatible with the output profile you plan to use.
- Get YouTube’s current stream details. In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the current RTMPS server URL and stream key for the broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS · YouTube: Manage live stream settings
- Create a YouTube publication service in Restreamer. Enter the RTMPS URL and stream key in the publication settings, using the current interface for your installed version. Treat the key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the Restreamer service.
- Start the publication and check YouTube’s preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast. Confirm that video and audio arrive as expected and that the stream remains stable during a test.
Match encoding settings to the feed and available bandwidth
Use YouTube’s ingestion recommendations as a starting point, not as proof that a particular VPS can encode or carry the stream. For 1080p at 30 frames per second using H.264, YouTube recommends a 5 Mbps video bitrate. Its general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Resolution and frame rate: match the output to the source and intended broadcast. Do not select a higher output resolution than the feed can supply usefully.
- Video codec and bitrate: use H.264 settings supported by the source and publication path. At 1080p30, use YouTube’s 5 Mbps recommendation as a reference for video bitrate, then verify stable delivery and available headroom.
- Rate control and keyframes: use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes these settings; do not exceed YouTube’s stated 4-second keyframe interval.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and check audio in the YouTube preview, not only in Restreamer’s local status.
- Bandwidth: allow the recommended 20% headroom above the stream’s upload requirement, and account for other traffic on the server. A transfer quota and sustained upload capacity are separate constraints.
Test recovery and plan for interruptions
Before leaving a stream unattended, test the complete path: source to Restreamer, server egress to YouTube, and the resulting preview and stream health. Also test what happens after a container restart and after a temporary interruption in the input or network. A Docker restart policy covers container restarts; it does not fix upstream outages or guarantee that YouTube will accept a resumed stream.

For critical broadcasts, arrange monitoring outside the server so an operator can learn when the feed or publication stops. Keep recovery steps available: check the source first, then the Restreamer process and logs, VPS resource and network usage, firewall rules, and YouTube’s stream status. Backups help restore configuration, but they do not replace monitoring or a tested recovery plan.
Understand the archive limit for a continuous stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish whether a continuous 24-hour stream will be archived in full, so do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only recording plan for a 24/7 broadcast. If a complete recording matters, arrange and verify an independent recording or segmentation workflow, and check YouTube’s current guidance before going live. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- Restreamer’s web interface is unreachable: check that the container is running, the mapped web port matches your deployment, and the VPS firewall permits your administrative route. Do not solve the problem by opening every port to the internet.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the current RTMPS URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the publication service settings, and check outbound network access. Reset a key if you suspect it was exposed.
- The source does not appear in Restreamer: check that the source is active and reachable from the VPS, that any required ingest port is allowed, and that the source’s format is compatible with the configured input.
- The broadcast buffers or drops frames: check sustained VPS upload capacity, competing traffic, transfer limits, and the chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; lowering the bitrate may help if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- The video or audio is missing or incompatible: compare the source and output codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio format with the publication profile and YouTube’s recommendations. Test changes in the preview before depending on the stream.
- A container restart does not restore the broadcast: the restart policy only restarts the container. Check whether the input is still available, the host has resources, and the network and YouTube publication path are functioning.
- Unknown streams appear on an RTMP port: restrict or close public ingest access and use version-appropriate token protection if public ingest is necessary. The legacy token guide should be checked against your installed release.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than to operate your own Ubuntu server, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative.
