Restreamer itself is presented by its project as free, with no ongoing license costs. Self-hosting is not cost-free: you supply a computer or rented server, reliable upload bandwidth, electricity if the machine is local, and the time or paid help needed to configure and maintain it. There is no well-supported universal monthly total; your answer depends on what you already own and what your stream requires.
What Restreamer pricing includes—and what it does not
Datarhei’s Restreamer project describes the software as having “no ongoing license costs.” That describes the software license, not the full cost of operating a YouTube stream. You still need a host, internet connectivity, and a secure working setup. Electricity, equipment, network configuration, maintenance, and support may also have costs.
Restreamer is self-hosted software for publishing a stream to YouTube and other services. It is distinct from Restream, a separate cloud multistreaming service. Restream’s plan prices are not Restreamer license fees or self-hosting prices.
Choose where Restreamer will run
| Option | What you pay for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Suitable local or existing hardware | Potentially new equipment, electricity, and any incremental broadband or setup costs. Exact prices depend on your situation. | Avoids a separate VPS bill if you already have suitable hardware and connectivity, but you manage the machine, network, and ongoing operation. |
| Rented VPS | A recurring hosting charge, plus any costs or limits associated with bandwidth, storage, or workload under that provider’s terms. | Provides a server hosted by a provider, but the advertised monthly rate may require term prepayment and may differ at renewal. |
The project documents Docker deployment examples for AMD64, ARMv7, and ARM64, including Raspberry Pi, Nvidia CUDA, and Intel VAAPI options. Those examples establish that multiple architectures and acceleration paths are available; they do not prove that every low-cost device can process every resolution or number of destinations. Check current compatibility against your intended workload before buying hardware.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What a VPS offer can really cost
At the time the cited Hostinger page was checked, it displayed $6.49 per month for its KVM 1 introductory offer and listed renewal at $11.99 per month for two years. Hostinger says plans are paid upfront and the displayed monthly rate is the total term price divided by the number of months. These are one provider’s term-based offer details, not a general VPS market rate; terms can change, so verify the checkout total, prepayment period, renewal price, and included bandwidth before purchasing.
A VPS comparison is incomplete if it considers only the headline monthly figure. Confirm whether the plan’s resources and network allowance suit your stream, whether overages or limits apply, and whether the server can handle any encoding or processing you need. The available sources do not establish a controlled performance comparison or a full lifecycle cost model.

Estimate your own monthly cost
Because equipment, electricity, broadband, labor, and stream settings differ, calculate your own total rather than relying on a generic “Restreamer cost.” Separate one-time spending from recurring bills.
- List existing equipment. If you plan to run Restreamer locally, note whether you already have a suitable computer or device that can remain on. If not, research the purchase cost of hardware compatible with your workload; the project materials do not establish a universal model or price.
- Add hosting if renting a server. Use the actual checkout amount and billing term, not only a monthly-equivalent promotional rate. Record the renewal price and any bandwidth or resource limits.
- Check network suitability and terms. A local host needs reliable upload capacity. Check whether your broadband plan has a data cap, usage charge, or other relevant condition. For a VPS, read the provider’s network allowance and overage terms.
- Account for power and setup. A locally hosted, always-on device uses electricity. Router or firewall configuration may also take time or require paid help. The official setup documentation gives no standard price for electricity or labor.
- Include ongoing effort or support. You are responsible for maintaining the host and network unless you pay someone to help. Datarhei offers commercial support, development, and consulting by inquiry, but no standard price is established in the cited materials.
Your result is a personal estimate: recurring hosting or broadband charges, any applicable electricity and usage costs, plus equipment and setup costs treated separately. The available pricing evidence does not support a single all-in monthly figure for a typical user.

Do not overlook bandwidth and always-on operation
Datarhei’s FAQ, whose page carries a 2022 footer, warns: “An HD live stream can quickly consume over 1 GB of data PER DAY(!)” and recommends flat-rate broadband. Treat that as an old, approximate rule of thumb, not a current guarantee or a number to multiply into a universal annual bill. Actual use depends on bitrate and runtime. Check your own stream settings and provider terms.
For local hosting, the computer and network must remain available for the stream to continue. A suitable device on flat-rate broadband may make the incremental cash cost relatively small, but that does not remove the electricity, reliability, setup, and maintenance considerations. A VPS makes hosting a visible bill instead; its service limits and actual renewal terms still matter.

Setup has security and configuration costs too
The official quick start uses Docker and provides an example mapping container ports 8080, 8181, 1935, 1936, and UDP 6000. It identifies public HTTP 80 and HTTPS 443 as standard ports and says forwarding 80→8080 and 443→8181 is needed for full functionality in the documented setup. A home deployment may therefore require router and firewall work. Do not expose an administration interface publicly without securing access and understanding the network configuration.
Choose a secure, unique password as the quick start instructs. Datarhei’s FAQ and repository also discuss external access and forwarding for protocols including HTTP/S, RTMP/S, and SRT. The exact configuration depends on how you deploy the service; the example port mappings are not a reason to open every port indiscriminately.

For deployment, Datarhei strongly recommends official Docker images to avoid missing, outdated, or mismatched dependencies and operating-system issues. Its minimum requirements apply to installations covered by its SLA and paid Support Policy, so confirm requirements for your precise environment if professional support is important. The repository’s examples use --privileged for local devices such as USB cameras; that option is not universally required for every installation.
Keep the YouTube side in view
Restreamer’s setup is only one part of publishing. You also need a YouTube channel and stream configuration that can go live, and you must have the rights to the video, audio, and other material you broadcast. Copyright claims, permissions, and YouTube’s rules on reused content are separate from the software license and hosting bill. Check YouTube’s current requirements for your channel and content before investing in a 24/7 setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the reason you are considering Restreamer is to keep uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud service loops the uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera livestreaming. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
