Yes—Squid Game: Unleashed was a real mobile launch, not an upcoming 2026 release. Netflix announced the game on November 19, 2024, and released it worldwide for iPhone, iPad and Android devices on December 17, 2024, ahead of Squid Game Season 2. It is an online multiplayer “party royale” game for up to 32 players, rather than a single-player retelling of Seong Gi-hun’s story.
What is Squid Game: Unleashed?
Netflix and Boss Fight Entertainment built Squid Game: Unleashed as a competitive mobile action game. Players enter online matches, survive a series of dangerous challenges and compete against other contestants. The presentation uses the television series’ characters, locations and visual language, but the game is not an interactive version of the show’s plot.
Netflix describes the format as a party royale supporting up to 32 players. Each round combines recognizable Squid Game challenges with original variations on familiar childhood games. Eliminations, hazards, power-ups and other players—not a scripted campaign—drive the experience.

How a match works
- Join an online match. You compete in a field of players rather than progressing through a solo story.
- Play a challenge. The objective may be reaching a finish line, avoiding hazards, surviving a timed section or outlasting opponents.
- Survive eliminations. Mistakes and failed objectives remove contestants as the match advances.
- Earn progression rewards. Continued play unlocks additional customization and progression items.
- Build a character. Netflix has promoted outfits, animations, emojis, weapons and power-ups, with events and tougher challenges expanding the experience over time.
The result is best understood as short-form, replayable multiplayer competition. It is a poor substitute for an offline story campaign, and an internet connection is central to both downloading and online play.
Which games are included?
The December 2024 launch was built around challenges inspired by the show and new games based on childhood activities. Netflix has identified show-related formats including Red Light, Green Light, Glass Bridge and Squid Game.
Netflix’s later coverage also lists modes and events such as Jump Rope, Hide and Seek, Sky Squid Game, Mingle, Lost in the Woods, Cross the Road, Marbles and Carnival Day. These should be treated as post-launch content or later additions, not automatically as the complete December 17, 2024 lineup. The game has been presented as an evolving service with weekly events and new challenges.

Where to download it
Use an official source only:
- Search “Squid Game: Unleashed” in Apple’s App Store.
- Search the exact title in Google Play.
- Alternatively, open the Netflix app and look for its Mobile Games row, then follow the listing to install.
Check that the listing identifies Netflix or the official Netflix Games catalog as the publisher. Avoid APK mirrors, modified packages and other unofficial download sites; they can be outdated or unsafe.

Is it free?
The answer depends on when you mean:
- At launch in December 2024: Netflix presented the game as part of Netflix Games, normally included with a Netflix membership and offered without ads or in-app purchases.
- By July 2025: Netflix said Squid Game: Unleashed had become free for everyone, including people without a Netflix subscription. Netflix also said the game remained free of ads and in-app purchases under that announcement.
That is a change from the original Netflix Games access model. Because catalog and sign-in policies can change, check the current store listing or Netflix help page if the app asks for an account or displays different terms.

Device, account and connection requirements
You need a compatible iPhone, iPad or Android phone/tablet, enough free storage and an internet connection to download the game. Netflix’s general mobile-games guidance recommends Android 9 or later, iOS 17 or later and iPadOS 17 or later for the best experience, while noting that requirements vary by title. Another Netflix compatibility page lists broader support for some games, so those figures should not be treated as a guaranteed minimum for every device.
Older Android hardware, tablets, foldables, Chromebooks and large-screen devices may have different support or performance. If the game does not appear in your store, update the operating system, check regional availability and review the current listing’s compatibility notes.

The standard Netflix Games flow uses a Netflix account and profile for access and saved progress. Netflix’s later free-to-everyone announcement means a subscription may no longer be necessary, but the sign-in screen and account rules can vary by current release. No. Netflix says the game is designed to be playable without having watched the series. Knowing the show makes references such as Red Light, Green Light easier to recognize, but it is not a prerequisite. The game teaches objectives through its own matches rather than assuming you know the television plot.

The timing was deliberate. Squid Game: Unleashed launched on December 17, 2024, while Squid Game Season 2 premiered on December 26, 2024. Netflix positioned the game as a companion experience for the returning series and a way for audiences to engage with its challenges between episodes.

Who is it for?
It is a good fit if you enjoy the Squid Game theme, quick online matches, party-royale competition and collecting cosmetic or progression rewards. The lack of an advertised purchase price, ads or in-app purchases also lowers the barrier to trying it under Netflix’s stated model.
It may disappoint if you want a narrative campaign, offline play or a scene-by-scene adaptation of the show. Real-time multiplayer also depends on an active player population and a reliable connection, and repeated elimination rounds can feel repetitive. The cartoon presentation softens the television series’ violence but does not remove its competitive, high-pressure premise; parents should consider the game’s age rating and device settings.
The date in the headline, clarified
“Hits iOS and Android on Dec. 17” refers to a completed launch on December 17, 2024. It should not be read as a December 17, 2026 release announcement. The important current distinction is that the game launched inside Netflix Games, then Netflix later announced free access for non-subscribers. Confirm the live App Store or Google Play listing for the latest availability, login and compatibility rules.
