Spotify has not broadly increased the standard U.S. Premium audiobook allowance. Eligible subscribers still receive 15 hours per month from the included catalog. The newer development is Spotify’s expansion of paid Audiobooks+ options, including higher-hour tiers aimed at listeners who regularly use up their allowance.
What changed for Spotify audiobook listeners?
Spotify introduced 15 monthly audiobook hours for eligible U.S. Premium plans in November 2023. In August 2025, it added Audiobooks+, a recurring paid add-on that originally supplied another 15 hours per month.
At its May 2026 Investor Day, Spotify announced higher-hour Audiobooks+ options for heavier listeners. However, Spotify’s public announcement does not provide a complete U.S. table showing the exact hour amounts, prices, names, and rollout status of every tier. Those details may vary by account, plan, billing platform, and availability.

The accurate takeaway is therefore: more audiobook capacity is becoming available through paid add-ons, not that every U.S. Premium subscriber has suddenly received unlimited or universally increased free listening time.

Family and Duo members do not share the manager’s hours
The included 15 hours are not pooled across a Family or Duo household. Only the plan manager receives the included monthly allowance. Other members need their own eligible access, an add-on purchased for plan members where available, or a separate top-up.
This makes the advertised benefit less generous for households with multiple audiobook listeners. A Family plan can provide music access to several people while still giving only one person the included audiobook hours.

Spotify deducts time according to an audiobook’s normal-speed duration, not the number of real-world minutes spent listening. For example, a five-hour audiobook played at 2× speed still uses five hours of the allowance, even though it takes 2.5 hours to hear.
- Included monthly hours expire at the end of the billing period.
- Unused hours do not roll over.
- Spotify does not refund unused or expired listening time.
- Balance updates can be delayed after extended offline listening or after pausing mid-chapter.
A long book started near the end of a billing cycle can therefore outlast the remaining allowance. Increasing playback speed saves elapsed time but does not conserve Spotify audiobook hours.
What is included in Spotify’s catalog?
Look for the “Included in Premium” label. An audiobook appearing in Spotify’s app is not necessarily part of the subscriber catalog; some titles may be separately purchasable, and availability can change when rights change.
Spotify says its global audiobook catalog contains more than 700,000 titles, but that figure does not mean every title is included for U.S. Premium subscribers. Catalog size and rights vary by market and book.
How to check your hours
On mobile
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Select the name of your plan.
- Choose Track your included hours and top ups.
On desktop
Open Spotify’s Audiobook Listening Time page to view the balance. The displayed figure may not update immediately in every situation.
How to find Audiobooks+ and buy more time
To look for recurring add-ons, open your profile menu or Your Premium, select Manage, and choose Browse add-ons.
On the web, open Available subscriptions, select the Add-ons tab, and review the offers shown for your account. Spotify says availability can depend on your plan, market, account, and rollout status. Do not assume that another subscriber will see the same price or hour amount.
If you only occasionally exceed the allowance, a one-time top-up may be more practical than a recurring Audiobooks+ charge. Top-ups are used after included and Audiobooks+ hours and remain valid for 12 months from purchase. They require an eligible Premium subscription.

For casual listeners
Spotify can be a useful bonus if you already want eligible Premium music features. Fifteen hours is roughly enough for one long audiobook or two shorter, average-length books, although the result depends on each title’s runtime.
For frequent listeners
The relevant comparison is not simply “Spotify versus Audible.” Calculate the total cost of your existing Premium plan plus Audiobooks+, possible top-ups, or another audiobook service. Also check whether Spotify carries the titles you want and whether its monthly limit fits your habits.
The 2026 higher-hour options may make Spotify more workable for heavy listeners, but the public announcement does not establish a universal price or number of hours. Check the logged-in Add-ons page before deciding.

For students
Premium Student does not include the standard audiobook hours. Students who mainly want audiobooks should compare Audiobooks Access, library borrowing, and dedicated audiobook services rather than assuming Student includes the benefit.
Best Value
For households
Family and Duo users should count the number of actual audiobook listeners. Since the included allowance goes to the manager, a household with several regular listeners may need multiple add-ons or top-ups.
For library users
Libby may offer better value for people with access to a participating library, although availability, holds, lending periods, and borrowing limits depend on the library system. Spotify’s advantages are convenience and integration with music; its main drawback is metered monthly listening.
How Audiobooks Access differs from Premium
Audiobooks Access is a U.S.-only plan that provides 15 audiobook hours per month. Spotify describes its music and podcasts as ad-supported, so it is not equivalent to full Premium. It may suit someone primarily interested in audiobooks, but it is less attractive if ad-free or offline music is important.

What remains unclear
Spotify has announced larger Audiobooks+ options, but the reviewed first-party material does not publish a complete, universal U.S. schedule of exact tier sizes and prices. Treat account-level offers as the controlling information, particularly if you are on Family, Duo, Student, or a promotional plan.
Spotify has also reported that Audiobooks+ surpassed one million users and that audiobook listening hours grew 60% year over year. Those are company-reported figures, not an independent measure of value or listening quality.
Bottom line
Spotify is expanding audiobook access for U.S. listeners, but the change is easy to overstate. The documented standard benefit remains 15 hours per month for Premium Individual subscribers and Family or Duo managers. More time comes through Audiobooks+ higher-hour tiers or one-time top-ups, both of which can add cost and expire under their respective rules.
Check your account’s audiobook balance, catalog labels, and Add-ons page before upgrading. Spotify is most compelling for existing Premium users who listen casually or want everything in one app; it is less compelling for heavy listeners seeking unlimited access, permanent ownership, or audiobook hours for every household member.
