Spotify’s AI playlist creator is available to eligible Premium users in the United States, but the current in-app name is Prompted Playlist (Beta). Spotify’s support documentation describes it as a mobile-only, English-language feature with changing beta limits—not a tool every Spotify account receives automatically.
When did Spotify’s AI playlist feature reach the US?
Spotify announced the US expansion of AI Playlist on September 24, 2024, alongside Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. The initial beta was for Premium listeners using Spotify on Android and iOS in English. Spotify’s announcement described prompts based on moods, activities, genres, artists, and other listening ideas.

Spotify expanded the beta to more than 40 additional markets on April 24, 2025. In 2026, Spotify’s current product language shifted toward Prompted Playlist: the feature expanded to the US and Canada in January, after testing in New Zealand, with Australia, Ireland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom confirmed in a February update. Older articles may therefore say “AI Playlist” while the current app and support pages say “Prompted Playlist.”
This is best understood as a continuing product evolution, not a brand-new US launch in 2026.

Who can use Prompted Playlist?
- Subscription: Spotify Premium is required to generate a personalized playlist.
- Device: Spotify currently documents the feature for the mobile app, not desktop or the web player.
- Language: The current beta is available in English.
- Location: Your account must be in a supported market.
- Rollout: Spotify can limit access by account and impose changing beta usage limits, so a Premium subscription does not guarantee that the menu will appear immediately.
For US reference, Spotify’s Premium page showed these prices on August 18, 2026: Individual at $12.99 per month after the displayed introductory offer, Student at $6.99 after its displayed offer, Duo at $18.99, and Family at $21.99. How to create an AI playlist in Spotify
- Open the Spotify app on your phone or tablet.
- Open Your Library.
- Tap Create at the top.
- Choose Prompted Playlist.
- Describe the music you want in the prompt box.
- Optionally choose a daily or weekly refresh.
- Tap Generate playlist.
These are the current instructions in Spotify Support. Earlier AI Playlist documentation used Your Library → + → AI Playlist and suggested searching for “AI Playlist.” Treat that as a legacy route; the current label is Prompted Playlist.
After generation, you can edit the prompt or start over. Spotify may show a short explanation for why a song or episode was selected, and you can hide or show those notes. A refresh schedule does not promise an entirely new set of tracks or perfect compliance with every instruction.

Prompt ideas that fit the feature
Spotify says prompts can combine a mood, scenario, genre, artist, decade, place, activity, cultural moment, listening preference, or discovery request. It also says the system can use your taste and listening history together with current information about the music world.

Prompts are guidance rather than database filters. “No songs by this artist,” “only tracks from 1998,” and “never repeat a song” may influence the result without being enforced perfectly. Broad prompts can be more surprising; very narrow prompts can produce fewer or less consistent matches. Requests for “new” or “trending” music also depend on Spotify’s catalog, regional rights, and how the service interprets current signals.
Where is it available?
The April 24, 2025 announcement listed the following markets for the expanded AI Playlist beta. This is a dated historical list, not a permanent worldwide availability guarantee:

Spotify’s 2026 Prompted Playlist update specifically confirms the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Sweden, and United Kingdom, and says the experience is currently in English. Because the support page does not publish a complete, permanent global list, check the feature in your own account rather than assuming that a country on the 2025 list still has access.
What happens when you share a playlist?
You can copy a generated playlist’s link. Another Premium user in a supported test market can use the prompt to create a personalized version for their own account. A Free user can listen to the shared playlist, but cannot use the prompt to generate a personalized version. Sharing the result therefore does not transfer the AI-generation entitlement.

Prompted Playlist, Talk to Spotify, and AI DJ

Spotify documents Talk to Spotify separately. Its support page describes it as a conversational beta for Premium listeners aged 18 and older, with typed and spoken requests. It is not simply a new name for AI Playlist. Availability for all three experiences can vary by country, language, plan, age, and beta status.

- Confirm that the signed-in account has Premium rather than Free.
- Use the latest Spotify mobile app, not the desktop app or web player.
- Check Your Library → Create, rather than relying only on Search.
- Update Spotify through your device’s official app store.
- Sign out and back in to verify that you are using the intended account.
- Check whether the account’s country or payment profile is in a supported market.
- Try again later if you may have reached a temporary beta usage limit.
Spotify does not promise that reinstalling the app, changing your region, or using a VPN will activate the feature. A VPN may not change account eligibility and can create billing or terms-of-service complications.
Privacy and beta limitations
Personalization is central to the feature: Spotify says the playlist reflects your taste and listening history. The support page warns that you are interacting with an AI-powered tool and links to information about data management and sharing. It does not, in the cited product documentation, identify a specific external AI model that users should assume is handling their prompts.

Prompted Playlist remains a beta. Spotify may change its label, interface, market coverage, usage limits, refresh behavior, sharing rules, or generation quality. Spotify’s paid-subscription terms also reserve the ability to modify subscription features and content, so this should not be treated as a permanent, unchangeable Premium entitlement.
Should you pay for Premium just to try it?
Prompted Playlist is one experimental feature inside Premium, not a separate subscription. Premium can make sense if you also want the broader paid service, such as ad-free listening and other Premium benefits. It is a weak reason by itself to subscribe when access is still conditional on market, language, account rollout, and usage limits.
- Individual: Intended for one user.
- Student: For eligible US students who complete verification.
- Duo: For two people who meet Spotify’s same-address household requirement.
- Family: For eligible household members at the same address, not as a workaround for unrelated users.

The Bottom Line
Spotify’s AI playlist creator has been available to eligible US Premium users since September 2024. In the current app it is called Prompted Playlist (Beta): an English-language, mobile-only experience that turns a description into a personalized playlist. Availability and limits remain subject to Spotify’s changing beta rollout.
