Spotify Offline Backup is an automatically assembled fallback playlist for Premium subscribers. It draws on music already cached on your phone from recent listening, so it can help when you lose your connection—but it is not a substitute for downloading the exact albums or playlists you want before a trip. Spotify introduced the feature in October 2024; it remains listed among the offline-listening benefits on Spotify’s U.S. Premium page.
What Spotify Offline Backup does
Offline Backup uses tracks Spotify has already cached on your device, including recently streamed or queued music, to create a playlist for listening without an internet connection. Spotify says the selection evolves as you listen and can be filtered or sorted by artist, mood, and genre. The feature is a fallback drawn from recent activity, not a copy of your Spotify library or a promise that a particular song will be available.

Three terms help clarify the difference:
- Cache: Local app data retained from recent listening.
- Manual download: Music you explicitly save in Spotify for offline playback.
- Offline Backup: Spotify’s automatically generated playlist from eligible cached tracks.
Spotify’s announcement describes Offline Backup as reusing cached content without extra data or storage for the backup playlist itself. That does not mean ordinary listening, cache activity, or manual downloads never use data or device storage.
Who can use it
Spotify announced Offline Backup for Premium subscribers globally on Android and iOS, with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The global availability statement describes the launch; whether the feature appears for a particular listener can still depend on account status, app version, device, and rollout behavior. Spotify Free users are not eligible for this Premium feature.

Car compatibility does not mean it is available in every vehicle: the phone, car system, Spotify app, and account must support the relevant Android Auto or CarPlay integration.
How to enable and find Offline Backup
- Use Spotify on an iPhone or Android phone and listen while online. The playlist needs eligible tracks cached on the device.
- Enable the offline setting. In Spotify Settings, look for Offline Access on Android or Offline Listening on iOS. Menu placement and wording can vary by app version and localization.
- Go offline and check Home. Spotify is designed to surface Offline Backup in the Home feed when it detects that the device has no connection.
- If needed, find it while connected. Search Spotify for “Offline Backup” online and add it to your library for easier access. Saving or finding the playlist does not make uncached tracks playable offline.
Launch coverage reported that users needed at least five recent songs—one report specified more than five—before the playlist could be generated or displayed. Treat that as a launch-era reported threshold, not a permanently guaranteed rule: Spotify’s public announcement does not specify a fixed minimum or disclose the full selection algorithm.

What it cannot guarantee
- Specific music: The generated selection may not contain the album, playlist, or track you need.
- A complete offline library: It is a fallback, not a full account backup or a replacement for manually downloaded music.
- Persistence after clearing local data: A later Spotify Community support response says clearing the cache or reinstalling the app can remove locally built Offline Backup content; online listening may be needed to rebuild it.
- Availability with little recent listening: If you have not streamed or queued much music, there may be too little eligible cached material for a useful selection.
If Offline Backup does not appear
- Confirm that your account has Premium.
- Update Spotify through your device’s app store.
- Listen to several songs while online so Spotify has recent activity and cached material to use.
- Check that Offline Access or Offline Listening is enabled in Spotify Settings.
- Make sure the phone has room for Spotify’s normal caching behavior.
- Disconnect from the internet and check the Home feed; if you are online, search for Offline Backup and save it to your library.
- Avoid clearing Spotify’s cache if you are relying on cached offline material. After reinstalling the app or resetting the phone, expect local cached content to need rebuilding.

For travel where you know what you want to hear, manually download it before leaving. Offline Backup is useful when you forget or want an evolving safety net, but its contents are less predictable because they follow cached listening activity.

Offline Backup can add convenience if you regularly lose reception and already listen to Spotify. It is a weak reason on its own to subscribe if you need a guaranteed offline selection: manual downloads provide more control, and this feature does not ensure any particular track is available. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page lists Offline Backup among offline-listening benefits: Spotify Premium. Subscription prices and offers vary by market and date.
