Spotify announced on December 9, 2025, that full-length music videos were entering beta for Premium users in the United States and Canada. On a supported song, open the Now Playing screen and choose “Switch to video.” Spotify named iOS, Android, desktop and TV devices as supported categories, but the catalog is limited: a Premium subscription does not put a video behind every song.
What Spotify launched
This is an in-app video layer attached to supported music tracks, not a separate music-video service or an open video-upload platform. Start a song normally, then switch between its audio and official video from the playback interface. Spotify says the initial catalog is limited and will expand over time.
The North American release follows Spotify’s March 2024 beta in selected international markets, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Kenya. Spotify’s artist team has also described studio videos, live performances and covers in the broader rollout, although the U.S. and Canadian announcement is the relevant source for this launch.
Spotify’s North American announcement characterizes the feature as a beta. That means the catalog, interface, device support and account availability can continue to change.

How to watch a Spotify music video
- Update Spotify through your device’s normal app store or software updater.
- Sign in to an eligible Premium account in the United States or Canada.
- Play a song that has a Spotify video.
- Open the Now Playing screen.
- Look above or near the song title for “Switch to video.”
- Select the control to start the video. Use the same playback interface to return to audio.
Labels and controls can be placed differently on mobile, desktop and TV. Spotify’s artist guidance describes switching from the Now Playing experience, but it does not promise that the control will appear for every track. The practical test is simple: if the control is absent, that song, account, region or device may not currently qualify.
Who can use the feature?
Premium and geography
The North American beta was announced for Premium users in the U.S. and Canada. Free listeners should not assume they have equivalent access. Eligibility can also depend on the account’s country, the individual track, licensing and the rollout reaching that account or device.
Family and age controls
On April 9, 2026, Spotify announced controls for how video appears. Family-plan managers can switch video content on or off for members through subscription settings. Spotify also lists video controls under Settings > Content and display, including separate behavior for music and podcast video.

Access is different from permission for a particular video. A family member may be covered by a manager’s video setting, an individual music video may be age-restricted, or account age and parental controls may affect what appears. Spotify’s family guidance is available at its video-control update and its young-user and family-controls announcement.

Spotify’s announcement names these categories:

Spotify Connect, car systems, game consoles and web browsers should be treated as unconfirmed unless the feature appears in that specific app or device. A video working on a phone does not guarantee identical behavior elsewhere.
Why a song may have audio but no video
No: the entire Spotify catalog is not available as video. A song can play normally in audio while lacking a video version because:

- The artist, label or distributor has not supplied or licensed a Spotify video.
- Rights differ by country, so a video can appear in one market and not another.
- A video release can arrive later than the audio release.
- Rights, supplied masters or catalog decisions can change availability.
- A video found on YouTube does not guarantee that the same version exists on Spotify.
Playlist membership also proves nothing about video availability. The video is attached to an eligible track, not automatically to every item in a playlist. Spotify has not published a definitive North American catalog count, so claims that a specific percentage or number of songs have videos should be rejected.
“Videos for You” adds a discovery layer
Spotify says its personalized “Videos for You” playlist became available to Premium users in the U.S. and Canada on June 15, 2026. This is separate from finding a video through an individual song’s “Switch to video” control. The announcement establishes the availability date, but not one universal navigation path for every device, so the playlist’s location may vary by app version.

Data, battery and offline limits
Video normally uses substantially more bandwidth and battery than audio, but Spotify’s North American announcement does not provide a bitrate, data-use estimate or quality selector. For long viewing sessions, use Wi-Fi, check Spotify’s data-saving settings and test cellular playback before traveling.
Do not assume that downloading a song for offline audio also downloads its video. The cited launch material establishes streaming access, not offline music-video downloads, and no offline-video capability should be promised without a current Spotify support confirmation.

Is Spotify Premium worth it specifically for music videos?
When it makes sense
- You already use Spotify and want occasional videos without moving playlists or recommendations to another app.
- You value Spotify’s audio features and regard video as an extra benefit rather than the main reason to subscribe.
- You want personalized video discovery through “Videos for You” where it is available.
When it is a weak reason to subscribe
- Your main goal is the largest possible collection of official videos, live clips, remixes, interviews and alternate uploads.
- You listen almost entirely to audio and would rarely watch on a screen.
- You expect every song in your library to offer a video.
For price context, Spotify’s pages retrieved in August 2026 listed the following recurring plan prices; taxes, promotions and renewal terms can change:

When “Switch to video” is missing
Work through these explanations in order:
- Confirm that the account is Premium and registered in the United States or Canada.
- Try a track known to have a Spotify video; a missing control on one song may simply mean there is no video version.
- Update Spotify and test another named device category—mobile, desktop or TV.
- Check Settings > Content and display, especially if the account is part of a Family plan.
- Sign out and back in, then test again. This is a practical troubleshooting step, not a Spotify-certified requirement.
- If the control is absent across supported devices, consult Spotify Support; regional rights, account rollout and device support can all affect availability.
Common cases
- Audio works in a playlist, but video does not: playlist membership does not imply a video version.
- A Family member cannot watch: the manager may have disabled video, or age-related controls may apply.
- “Videos for You” is missing: treat it as a separate personalized surface whose placement can differ by device and app version.
Bottom line
Spotify is becoming more video-capable, but this remains a Premium beta with track-level availability in the U.S. and Canada—not a complete replacement for YouTube’s video ecosystem. It is a useful addition for existing Spotify listeners who want occasional integrated viewing. Choose a video-first service instead if comprehensive coverage and broad video discovery matter more than keeping everything inside Spotify.
