Yes—Spotify Free users can now search for and start individual songs. Spotify announced the global change on September 15, 2025, ending the old mobile experience in which listeners generally had to wait for shuffle to reach a track. The important qualification is that direct song selection is not the same as Premium-level queue control: Spotify’s support documentation still says Smart Shuffle is always active for Free listeners on mobile.
What Spotify changed
Spotify’s September 2025 Free-tier update introduced three related ways to start music:
- Pick & Play: tap a song directly in the Spotify app.
- Search & Play: search for a specific track and begin listening immediately.
- Share & Play: open and play a song shared by a friend or artist.
Spotify described the rollout as global. This is broader than the earlier Free model, when on-demand playback was concentrated mainly in selected personalized playlists. Spotify’s 2018 redesign, for example, offered direct playback inside 15 chosen playlists rather than across the catalog (Spotify’s 2018 announcement).
How to play a specific song on Spotify Free
- Update and open the latest Spotify mobile app.
- Sign in to a Free account and tap Search.
- Enter the song title, artist or album.
- Select the desired track from the results.
- Check the Now Playing screen to confirm that the selected song starts.
- Repeat the test with an individual track in a playlist or album and with a song link shared by another person.
Spotify’s announcement uses the labels “Search and play” and “Pick & Play,” rather than promising one identical menu path for every app version, device or account.

What “on demand” does—and does not—mean
The clearest official promise is that a Free listener can start the song they choose. That does not guarantee the same behavior after that song ends.

Spotify’s November update says a listener can tap a song while shuffling to play it next without reshuffling the queue. That improves control over the immediate next track, but it does not turn the Free service into an unrestricted linear player.

Is Spotify Free still using shuffle?
On mobile, yes. Spotify defines Smart Shuffle as a mode that mixes personalized recommendations into a playlist or listening session. Recommended tracks are identified with an Enhance badge beside the artist name or in the Now Playing interface.
Spotify’s current support page says Smart Shuffle is always active for Free listeners on mobile. Therefore, “Spotify removed shuffle restrictions” is accurate only in the narrow sense that you no longer have to wait for shuffle to reach the song you want. It is not evidence that every recommendation, shuffle or queue behavior has disappeared.

Can Free users turn Smart Shuffle off?
Spotify does not document a shuffle-off switch for Free mobile accounts. Premium users can cycle through the shuffle modes from a playlist or the Now Playing bar, and can manage Smart Shuffle through:
- Tap your profile picture.
- Select Settings and privacy.
- Open Playback.
- Turn off Include Smart Shuffle in play modes.
That path is a Premium comparison, not a workaround for disabling Smart Shuffle on a Free mobile account. Controls can also differ between iOS, Android, desktop, web, televisions and connected devices, as well as by market, playlist type and account rollout.

What remains different from Premium?
Choosing a song for free does not remove the other reasons people subscribe. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page describes the Free experience as ad-supported and lists offline listening among Premium benefits.

Spotify does not publish one universal current skip limit for every country, platform and account, so older claims about a fixed number of skips should not be treated as a general rule.

If the feature is missing
The update was announced as a global rollout, but Spotify did not give one minimum app version or promise identical behavior in every context. Try these checks:
- Update Spotify through your device’s app store.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Sign out, then sign back in.
- Confirm that the account is on the Free tier.
- Test a well-known track, a direct search result, a playlist track and a shared link.
- Compare mobile behavior with desktop or web playback.
- Look at Now Playing for shuffle, Smart Shuffle or recommended-track indicators.
If search works but a particular playlist does not, that does not necessarily mean Spotify reversed the policy. The announcement does not guarantee identical behavior for every playlist type or device.
When Free is enough—and when Premium is worth it
Free is a reasonable fit when you:
- Occasionally need to start a particular song.
- Accept advertisements.
- Enjoy recommendations after the selected track.
- Do not need downloads for flights, commuting or poor-coverage areas.
Premium is the stronger choice when you need:
- Ad-free listening.
- Offline playback.
- More predictable album and playlist sequencing.
- The ability to disable Smart Shuffle.
- More extensive queue and playback control.

Bottom line
Spotify Free is no longer simply “shuffle-only.” Since the September 15, 2025 update, Free users can search for, select and start individual tracks, including songs shared by friends or artists. The change removes the need to wait for shuffle to reach a desired song, but Free mobile playback still has Smart Shuffle and recommendation limitations. Premium remains the option for ad-free, offline and more controllable listening.
