Felix Kjellberg entered YouTube while Let’s Play videos were still becoming mainstream, developed an instantly recognizable style around horror-game reactions, uploaded persistently, and gave viewers a shared identity. He then extended that audience into commentary, comedy, music, books, merchandise and original programming. The 2018–19 T-Series rivalry made him a global internet symbol, although MrBeast overtook him as the most-subscribed individual creator in 2022.
Who is PewDiePie?
PewDiePie is the channel and public persona of Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, a Swedish creator born on October 24, 1989. Kjellberg is the individual; PewDiePie became the channel, character and community built around him. His work has included gaming commentary, comedy, reactions, commentary videos, music and personal uploads.
Any claim that he is “the biggest YouTuber” needs a metric and date. He was YouTube’s most-subscribed channel in 2013 and became the first individual YouTuber to reach 100 million subscribers in 2019. T-Series was the first channel overall to reach that figure, and Guinness records MrBeast as having overtaken PewDiePie as the most-subscribed individual creator in 2022. Before PewDiePie, gaming videos were not mainstream entertainment
Let’s Play videos existed before Kjellberg, but YouTube made the format unusually accessible. A creator needed a game, capture software, a microphone and an upload connection rather than a television studio. Familiar games supplied searchable subjects and repeatable episodes, while the creator supplied the reason to return.

That combination was particularly effective for horror games. Even when viewers knew the title, they did not know how the person on screen would react. Surprise, tension and humor created an emotional payoff that a silent playthrough could not. Contemporary profiles describe Kjellberg’s rise as gradual accumulation rather than one miraculous viral hit. ESPN’s account of his early rise places it in the formative period of gaming commentary.
He made the creator the main event
Kjellberg’s videos were not simply recordings of games. They were performances built around gameplay:
- Fast, informal delivery and exaggerated facial and vocal reactions.
- Improvised jokes, shock, absurdity and recurring phrases.
- Direct address that made the viewer feel present in the room.
- A deliberately unpolished tone that contrasted with traditional media.
The game provided the situation; PewDiePie provided the character. That distinction allowed the format to travel from one title to another without losing its identity. TIME’s profile documents the horror-game focus, direct relationship with viewers and the gradual nature of his growth: TIME.
Consistency turned casual viewers into regulars
Frequent publishing created a habit. Recurring formats meant that every upload did not have to invent a new premise, and a large back catalog gave new viewers many ways to enter the channel. Regular releases also let the audience relationship develop over months and years.
This was cumulative growth, not a single breakthrough. By August 2013, he had passed Smosh to become YouTube’s most-subscribed channel. In September 2015, his channel became the first to surpass 10 billion views, a historical milestone rather than a measure of his current scale. The “Bro Army” made the channel feel like a movement
Repeated language, inside jokes and direct appeals turned viewers into participants. “Bro” and the “Bro Army” gave subscribers a name and a shared vocabulary. Fans could repeat the jokes, circulate clips and explain the culture to newcomers.
That identity created a feedback loop: audience reactions influenced what Kjellberg addressed next, while each upload reinforced the feeling that viewers were following a person rather than a conventional media company. The model became especially visible during the later “Subscribe to PewDiePie” campaign, when fans and fellow creators acted in the channel’s name.
YouTube’s timing and business ecosystem amplified the audience
Kjellberg grew while YouTube was becoming a major entertainment platform but before creator production was as crowded and professionally managed as it is now. Gaming was expanding as a category, and recommendation and subscription systems rewarded videos that generated repeat viewing and engagement. That is platform context, not proof that one undocumented algorithm change caused his success.
YouTube’s own 2019 review described a rapidly expanding creator economy built around advertising, memberships, merchandise, ticketing, YouTube Premium and Super Chat: YouTube’s 2019 review. Those tools helped turn attention into a broader business.
From channel to creator brand
PewDiePie moved beyond game footage into comedy sketches, reactions, commentary, music, books, merchandise, games and branded projects. His book This Book Loves You extended the persona into publishing. YouTube also selected him for Scare PewDiePie, one of its early YouTube Red original series, produced with Skybound Entertainment and Maker Studios; YouTube announced it at the launch of its Red originals.

Financial estimates show the scale of the business but not audited personal income. Forbes estimated about $12 million for the 12 months ending June 2015; that figure was a dated estimate, before taxes, not a verified lifetime total. TIME also reported historical earnings estimates in its profile: TIME.
The T-Series race made him a global internet symbol
In 2018, T-Series, an Indian music and film company with a vast catalog and regional entertainment infrastructure, began rapidly closing the subscriber gap. PewDiePie responded with videos and the slogan “Subscribe to PewDiePie.” Fans made memes, bought billboards and organized public stunts; creators including MrBeast promoted the campaign. The contest was both a genuine subscriber race and a media spectacle.

Guinness’ account of the race records how the lead repeatedly shifted. The comparison also exposed two different models: an individual personality with a community identity versus a corporate channel powered by a large entertainment catalog and market.

The same improvisational, boundary-pushing style that made PewDiePie feel authentic created serious risk. In 2017, videos containing anti-Semitic and Nazi imagery triggered backlash, the loss of commercial relationships and damage to his brand. Later criticism addressed offensive jokes, slurs and insensitive material.
Forbes linked the 2017 controversies to reputational and business consequences in its profile: Forbes. Attention generated by controversy did not make it a reliable growth strategy; the costs included advertiser concern and reduced trust. His story shows that unscripted performance can be both a competitive advantage and a liability.

Reinvention kept the audience interested
Over time, the channel shifted from high-frequency horror-game uploads toward commentary, memes, reactions, Minecraft and more personal material. These formats preserved the personality at the center while changing the surrounding subject matter.

He has also substantially reduced his upload frequency compared with his peak. Current descriptions often call him semi-retired, but the safer factual description is that his activity and career priorities changed. Any present subscriber total or upload status should be checked on the live channel page because both change continuously.
What PewDiePie changed about YouTube
- Gaming became mainstream creator entertainment: gameplay could support a mass personality brand.
- Personality became a media asset: viewers followed the host across games, formats and products.
- Community became distribution: shared language and participation encouraged retention and sharing.
- Individuals could compete culturally with companies: the T-Series race made that contrast visible worldwide.
- Creator businesses diversified: advertising was joined by publishing, merchandise, premium programming, sponsorships and games.
The enduring lesson for aspiring creators is not to copy a catchphrase or buy expensive equipment. It is to combine a repeatable format with a distinctive point of view, publish consistently enough to build habit, and give viewers a reason to participate in a community.
The Bottom Line
PewDiePie’s rise was a system, not a lucky viral accident: early timing, personality-driven gaming, consistent publishing, community identity, platform distribution and repeated reinvention compounded over years. His historical influence remains substantial even though he no longer holds the top individual-subscriber ranking.
