Titans of the Tide is an enjoyable, approachable SpongeBob platformer, and the strongest case for calling it Bob’s best game since Battle for Bikini Bottom is its lively presentation and SpongeBob-and-Patrick teamwork. But repetitive platforming and a difficulty curve that rarely rises keep it from being an unqualified successor. It is a good fit for fans seeking a charming adventure, not a demanding platforming challenge.
What kind of SpongeBob game is Titans of the Tide?
Released by THQ Nordic and developer Purple Lamp on November 18, 2025, SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide is a single-player 3D platforming adventure. A feud between King Neptune and the Flying Dutchman unleashes ghostly trouble across Bikini Bottom, sending SpongeBob and Patrick out to restore order. The official game overview highlights encounters with the Flying Dutchman, King Neptune, and Hibernation Sandy.
The adventure visits recognizable settings including Neptune’s Palace, Mount Bikini, and Goldfish Island. THQ Nordic says the game is fully voiced by the original cast, with Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton among the familiar characters. That combination of locations, voices, animation, and humor is central to its appeal: this is designed as a lighthearted return to Bikini Bottom, rather than a reinvention of the platforming genre.
How do SpongeBob and Patrick play together?
Switching between the two leads is the game’s defining hook. SpongeBob and Patrick have distinct platforming abilities, and the intended pleasure is figuring out when a route or obstacle calls for one character rather than the other. Nintendo’s store description specifically names Patrick’s grappling and burrowing, alongside character switching.

#1 Best Overall
- Switch seamlessly between SpongeBob and Patrick
- Combine SpongeBob and Patrick's unique platforming skills
- Master Patrick's brand-new skills like grappling and burrowing
- Experience a new ghostly story
- Fully voiced by the original cast of the show
That gives the adventure more personality than a single-character run through familiar scenery. The comparison that matters, though, is not simply whether both characters are playable: it is how often swapping meaningfully changes a solution or encourages a different route. The available reviews establish the duo’s appeal as a feature, but do not provide enough detail to claim that every level makes equally deep use of the mechanic. Treat it as a welcome organizing idea, not proof of consistently elaborate puzzles.
What works—and what gets repetitive?
The SpongeBob atmosphere
Tom’s Guide’s reviewer, who played on PC with a controller, praises the familiar settings, animation, voice work, and lighthearted dialogue. Those elements help the game feel recognizably SpongeBob even through less exciting stretches. Meristation likewise describes a traditional 3D platformer built around broad levels, enemies, secrets, collectibles, challenges, minigames, and humor, placing Purple Lamp’s work alongside Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated and The Cosmic Shake.

The steady, accessible platforming
Approachability is both a strength and a limitation. Tom’s Guide reports that the difficulty does not meaningfully ramp up and that platforming can become repetitive. Players who want a relaxed adventure may appreciate a steady challenge; those looking for increasingly demanding jumps or a sharp late-game test may find the pacing too even. Meristation’s description of the game’s broad selection of activities suggests variety in what levels contain, but that variety does not cancel the reported repetition in the core platforming.
Tom’s Guide also reports a largely smooth playthrough with one glitch that the reviewer resolved through button presses. That is a single reviewer’s experience, not evidence that every platform version is free of technical issues or that the same glitch is widespread.

Is it Bob’s best game since Battle for Bikini Bottom?
That is a defensible personal verdict if “best” means a polished-feeling, warmly presented, accessible SpongeBob adventure with a clear two-character hook. The familiar cast and settings give it the strongest emotional connection, while Patrick’s distinct abilities provide a reason to think about who should tackle a platforming obstacle.
The case is less decisive if the comparison rests on consistently inventive level play or a substantial rise in challenge. The reported repetition and limited difficulty progression are meaningful weaknesses, and the available reviews do not establish an objective series ranking or prove that exploration and character switching surpass the earlier game. THQ Nordic’s launch announcement confirms the series context, not a quality hierarchy.

- Join the new "recruited" members of Amanda Wallers infamous Task Force X, Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and King Shark
- Players can experiment with a range of different play styles to deal maximum damage to their enemies
- Whether in single-player mode or online with up to three friends, players can tackle this suicide mission in their own way
- All team members have their own movement mechanism
- Choose it for: SpongeBob’s familiar world, original-cast voice work, humor, and a friendly single-player platforming adventure.
- Temper expectations for: a demanding challenge curve or platforming that stays surprising throughout.
- Use this comparison carefully: it may be the most appealing post-Battle for Bikini Bottom choice for some fans, but the evidence supports a qualified opinion, not a settled ranking.
