Saturday Night Live honored former host Val Kilmer with an on-screen photo just before the goodnights at the end of its April 5, 2025 episode, hosted by Jack Black. Kilmer had died four days earlier, on April 1, at age 65.
How did SNL honor Val Kilmer?
A photo of Kilmer appeared onscreen before the goodnights at the end of the April 5 episode. The report described the image as a tribute; it did not report a longer memorial segment, spoken remarks, or a written message accompanying the photo. AOL’s April 6 report, republishing Entertainment Weekly coverage, places the acknowledgment at the close of the show hosted by Jack Black.
When did Val Kilmer host Saturday Night Live?
Kilmer hosted SNL on December 9, 2000, with U2 as the musical guest. The episode drew on several of his best-known screen roles, including Iceman from Top Gun and Jim Morrison from The Doors. It also featured Kilmer as Jeb Bush and Burt Bacharach.
Sketches built around familiar roles
One premise revisited Iceman in “Iceman: The Later Years.” Another used Kilmer’s Morrison character in a Behind the Music-style sketch in which he forms the “Great Frog Society.” The episode’s callbacks made the 2000 appearance a showcase for both his film characters and his willingness to play comic versions of public figures.
