Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building sends Charles, Oliver and Mabel into Hollywood while keeping the mystery close to home: after Charles’s stunt double and friend Sazz Pataki is attacked, the trio must work out whether Sazz or Charles was the intended target. The season premiered in 2024 and brings an unusually starry cast into the Arconia’s expanding circle of suspects and neighbors.
What is Season 4 about?
The story begins with Sazz Pataki, Charles’s longtime stunt double and friend. Her attack leaves the central question hanging over the investigation: was Sazz the target, or was someone after Charles?
The mystery takes the trio to Los Angeles, where a studio is preparing a film about their true-crime podcast. The story then returns to the Arconia, where new residents in the building’s West Tower widen the field of possible connections. The Hollywood adaptation brings show-business satire and a self-referential twist to a case that still turns on the trio’s personal relationships.
Disney+ UK’s May 2024 announcement summarized the setup this way: “Questioning whether she or Charles was the intended victim, their investigation leads them all the way to Los Angeles where a Hollywood studio is readying a film about the Only Murders podcast.” Disney+ UK’s season announcement

The cast makes the film adaptation more than a passing plot device: the story places recognizable performers and Hollywood personalities inside a mystery about a podcast that has itself become entertainment. That gives the season a broader, more self-aware tone than a case confined to the apartment building.

The critical response reflected different expectations. NPR’s David Bianculli praised how the added talent “shine[s], and play[s], right along” with the returning stars, while USA Today’s Kelly Lawler called the season “a mystery you don’t need to be solved.” Le Monde’s Thomas Sotinel also praised its comic energy, but argued that the abundance of ideas can crowd the season. Taken together, those reviews suggest a useful way to judge the season: viewers who enjoy celebrity casting, Hollywood satire and self-aware comedy may find that mix a strength, while viewers looking above all for a tightly focused murder mystery may find it less satisfying. That is an interpretation of the reviews, not a measured split among viewers.
What distinguishes Season 4 from the earlier seasons?
The clearest comparison is about emphasis rather than a definitive ranking. Season 4 takes the podcast’s fictional success into a film-adaptation storyline, giving Hollywood and celebrity roles a larger place in the comedy. At the same time, its case returns to the Arconia and expands into the West Tower, so the building remains central even as the story travels to Los Angeles.
Whether that balance works depends on what a viewer wants from the series: a murder investigation that stays tightly in the foreground, or a broader comedy that uses the case to play with fame, filmmaking and the show’s own popularity. The available reviews support those as ways to compare the season; they do not establish a controlled season-by-season ranking.
Who made the series?
Only Murders in the Building was created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, who also serve as writers. Martin and Hoffman executive produce alongside Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Dan Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal. 20th Television produces the series, according to Disney+ UK’s season announcement.
