Shecky Greene, the Chicago-born comedian whose improvisational nightclub act made him a Las Vegas headliner, died at his Las Vegas home on December 31, 2023. He was 97. His widow told the Associated Press that he died of natural causes.
Who was Shecky Greene?
Greene was born Fred Sheldon Greenfield in Chicago on April 8, 1926, according to the Television Academy. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II, he returned to Chicago, attended community college and began working as a nightclub comedian. The Associated Press reports that a two-week booking at New Orleans’ Prevue Lounge turned into a six-year engagement.
His reputation was built principally in live rooms, where he could shape a performance around the people in front of him. Greene summed up that approach in an interview with the Las Vegas Sun in 2009: “I’ve never had an act,” Greene told the Las Vegas Sun in 2009. “I make it up as I go along.”
What was Shecky Greene famous for in Las Vegas?
The Associated Press dates Greene’s first Las Vegas show to 1953 and describes him as a Strip mainstay for roughly three decades. He headlined at venues including the Riviera and Tropicana, becoming known for an unscripted style that made audience reactions part of the material rather than interruptions to it.

Opening for Elvis Presley
Greene opened for Elvis Presley at the New Frontier in 1956. Recalling the engagement to the Los Angeles Times in 2005, Greene said the billing changed after the first show: “The kid should never have been in there,” Greene told the L.A. Times in 2005. “He came out in a baseball jacket. Four or five musicians behind him had baseball jackets on. It looked like a picnic. After the first show they switched the billing, and I headlined.”
