There is no authoritative ranking of Sheffield Wednesday’s celebrity supporters. This editorial shortlist brings together seven public figures whose links to the Owls are reported in the available sources, with the strength of evidence varying from person to person.
Seven famous Sheffield Wednesday supporters
The names below are not presented in a ranked order. The list balances public recognition with the available evidence of allegiance to Wednesday; it is not a club-issued list or a measured comparison of fame.
Michael Vaughan
The former England cricket captain is reported to have moved to Sheffield as a child and followed Wednesday since. The reference list says he has attended matches at Hillsborough and spoken about the club in the media. Vaughan’s wider profile includes captaining England during the 2005 Ashes victory.
Jarvis Cocker
Pulp’s frontman has long been associated with Wednesday. A secondary reference list says a 2016 Guardian interview confirmed his allegiance, mentioning his son in a full Wednesday kit and Cocker signing off with “Up the Owls.” Those details are reported second-hand here, so they should not be treated as independently verified quotations.

Richard Hawley
The Sheffield singer-songwriter is described as a lifelong Owls fan and regular at matches. FourFourTwo’s issue description independently says it interviewed Hawley about his passion for Wednesday and Atdhe Nuhiu.
Alex Turner
The Arctic Monkeys singer appears on a secondary list of famous Wednesday followers. The sources available for this shortlist do not include a direct interview or first-person confirmation of his support.

Jon McClure
The Guardian identifies Reverend and the Makers’ frontman as a Wednesday fan. In a feature published on 9 April 2026, McClure said: “I didn’t even know the club was a thing until I was about 18 years old and I’m a football fan.” The article concerns his role at Sheffield FC, which is distinct from his Wednesday allegiance.
Martyn Ware
Heaven 17 co-founder and musician Martyn Ware is included in the reference list, which says members of the band have followed Wednesday since it formed in 1980, sponsored players and recorded songs connected to the club. Those claims rely here on that source’s account.

The Thompson Twins singer is described by the reference list as a Wednesdayite, with the group also linked to club singles. The available material does not provide first-person confirmation, so this entry is less firmly corroborated than the Guardian’s reporting on McClure or FourFourTwo’s interview description for Hawley.

How to read the list
- “Most famous” is subjective: the sources provide no poll, statistic or shared measure that would establish a definitive order.
- The shortlist spans sport and music, including figures associated with Pulp, Arctic Monkeys, Reverend and the Makers, Heaven 17, Thompson Twins and Richard Hawley.
- The evidence is uneven. Jon McClure and Richard Hawley have independent coverage cited here; several other names appear through a single secondary list.
- Being famous, being from Sheffield, or having played for the club does not by itself establish support for Wednesday. This list is about reported supporters, not former players.
Other names sometimes considered
Sky Sports presenter David Garrido is an alternative candidate. An Access Wednesday interview from 2016 describes his allegiance and community ambassador role, but the available information does not establish whether he should rank ahead of anyone on this shortlist.
The Sherlocks are another possible group-level mention: the reference list specifically identifies brothers Kiaran and Brandon Crook as Wednesday supporters and says the band’s song “Falling” launched the club’s new kit in 2021. That evidence does not confirm that every band member supports the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday should not be confused with Sheffield United. Paul Heaton is not included: the FourFourTwo interview result cited in the reference list identifies him as a Sheffield United supporter.
