The full ensemble also reaches into the horror history the case inspired, with Tom Hollander as Alfred Hitchcock, Olivia Williams as Alma Reville, Joey Pollari as Anthony Perkins and Will Brill as Tobe Hooper.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story is led by Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein and Laurie Metcalf as his mother, Augusta Gein. But Netflix’s eight-episode drama is not confined to its Plainfield, Wisconsin story: its cast also includes actors playing Alfred Hitchcock, Alma Reville, Anthony Perkins and Tobe Hooper, using those figures to explore the horror films Netflix associates with Gein’s cultural legacy.
That wider approach is important when reading the cast list. This is a dramatized series inspired by real people and events, not a documentary or a scene-by-scene historical record. Some named characters portray historical people; some are fictionalized versions; and one, Ilse Koch, appears in the series only in Gein’s fantasies.
The principal cast at a glance
| Actor | Character | How to read the role |
|---|---|---|
| Charlie Hunnam | Ed Gein | Portrays the Wisconsin murderer and grave robber at the center of the season. |
| Laurie Metcalf | Augusta Gein | Portrays Ed’s mother; their relationship is central to the series’ framing. |
| Suzanna Son | Adeline Watkins | Based on a real person, but the series’ intimate, accomplice-like material is heavily dramatized. |
| Tom Hollander | Alfred Hitchcock | Portrays the filmmaker as the show turns toward Psycho and Gein’s horror-film legacy. |
| Olivia Williams | Alma Reville | Portrays Hitchcock’s wife and creative collaborator, a screenwriter and editor. |
| Vicky Krieps | Ilse Koch | Portrays the Nazi figure only within Gein’s fantasies, not as a historical encounter. |
| Lesley Manville | Bernice Worden | Portrays the Plainfield woman whose death is part of the Gein case. |
| Addison Rae | Evelyn | Plays a Plainfield babysitter character; this is fictionalized, not a simple one-to-one historical portrayal. |
| Joey Pollari | Anthony Perkins | Portrays the actor who played Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s Psycho. |
| Charlie Hall | Deputy Worden | Plays Bernice Worden’s son, portrayed here as a Plainfield police officer. |
| Tyler Jacob Moore | Sheriff Schley | Plays Plainfield’s head law-enforcement officer in the series. |
| Mimi Kennedy | Dr. Mildred Newman | Plays a sanatorium official; the character is based on the historical psychologist. |
| Will Brill | Tobe Hooper | Portrays the filmmaker and co-writer of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. |
| Robin Weigert | Enid Watkins | Plays Adeline Watkins’s mother. |
The Gein and Plainfield characters
Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein
Hunnam plays the real Ed Gein, whose crimes in rural Wisconsin became a lasting point of reference in American true crime and horror. The season follows his life while also asking how a real case became source material for later popular culture. That does not make every moment in Hunnam’s performance a verified reconstruction: the series imagines private conversations, motivations and interior life.
#1 Best Overall
Laurie Metcalf as Augusta Gein
Metcalf plays Augusta, Ed Gein’s mother. Netflix foregrounds the mother-son relationship as a key part of the drama, making her one of the season’s defining supporting characters rather than a brief biographical presence. Viewers should still distinguish the show’s interpretation of that relationship from independently documented history.
Lesley Manville as Bernice Worden
Manville portrays Bernice Worden, a central figure in the Plainfield strand. Her role places the story’s violence and investigation in a human setting rather than treating the case solely as the origin of horror-movie imagery.
Suzanna Son as Adeline Watkins
Son plays Adeline Watkins, who was a real person. This is one of the roles that needs the clearest historical caution: reporting on the series’ accuracy has found that its depiction of a close, highly involved relationship between Adeline and Gein is substantially invented. It is more accurate to say that Son plays a dramatized Adeline Watkins than to repeat the show’s plot as settled fact.
Rank #2
Addison Rae as Evelyn
Rae plays Evelyn, identified in the show’s character guide as a Plainfield babysitter. Evelyn is fictionalized. Her inclusion should not be read as evidence that every character in a period crime drama represents a documented participant in the historical case.

Charlie Hall, Tyler Jacob Moore, Mimi Kennedy and Robin Weigert
Hall plays Deputy Worden, identified by Netflix as Bernice’s son and a Plainfield police officer. Moore plays Sheriff Schley, the town’s lead law-enforcement figure in the series. Kennedy plays Dr. Mildred Newman, a sanatorium official based on the historical psychologist. Weigert plays Enid Watkins, Adeline’s mother. These roles help build the show’s local and institutional world, but the available series guide alone is not a reason to assign every one of them a full verified biography beyond the portrayal.
Why Alfred Hitchcock, Alma Reville and Anthony Perkins are in an Ed Gein drama
The Hitchcock material is the clearest sign that Monster: The Ed Gein Story is also a story about cultural afterlife. Tom Hollander plays Alfred Hitchcock, while Joey Pollari plays Anthony Perkins, the actor who played Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho. The series uses their work to examine how Gein’s case fed the public imagination around horror.
Rank #3
Olivia Williams plays Alma Reville. Reducing Reville to “Hitchcock’s wife” misses why the character matters: Netflix describes her as a screenwriter and editor who co-wrote several of Hitchcock’s films. Her presence gives the show a way to depict the creative work around Psycho, not simply the director’s public persona.
The connection should be stated precisely. Netflix identifies Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs as works inspired by Gein’s crimes. That is a cultural-influence claim, not a claim that any of those films is a literal retelling of the case.

Will Brill as Tobe Hooper
Will Brill portrays Tobe Hooper, the director and co-writer of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. His appearance takes the season beyond the making of Psycho and toward another landmark horror film Netflix links to Gein’s legacy. It is a useful reminder of the anthology’s premise: the season is interested in both the historical subject and the stories that later artists made from the cultural shadow of his crimes.
Rank #4
Vicky Krieps as Ilse Koch: a role that is explicitly fantasy
Krieps plays Ilse Koch, a Nazi figure whose name has long carried its own horrific associations. Netflix is explicit that Koch appears only in Gein’s fantasies. That distinction matters: the show is not claiming that Gein and Koch met, nor should a cast guide describe those scenes as historical interaction. They belong to the series’ subjective, imagined material.
What is historical and what is dramatized?
The safest way to approach the cast is role by role:
- Historical portrayals: Gein, Augusta Gein, Bernice Worden, Hitchcock, Reville, Perkins, Hooper and Dr. Newman are based on real people.
- Historically named but substantially dramatized: Adeline Watkins was real, but viewers should not assume the series’ relationship storyline is documented fact.
- Fictionalized screen character: Evelyn should not be treated as a clean historical counterpart.
- Fantasy depiction: Ilse Koch appears within Gein’s fantasies rather than in a real-world encounter.
This does not diminish the performances; it clarifies the kind of program they serve. Netflix labels the title a drama, and its creative approach begins with historical material before imagining scenes and psychology that the record cannot supply.

Where to watch and what to expect
Monster: The Ed Gein Story is a 2025, eight-episode Netflix drama rated TV-MA and available to stream; Netflix also lists offline downloading where the feature is available. Availability, rating labels and download options can vary by region. The subject matter includes murder, grave robbing and horror imagery, so this is not a light true-crime watch.
Further reading on the historical case
For readers who want a book about the historical case rather than a guide to the series, search for Harold Schechter’s Deviant: The Shocking True Story of Ed Gein, the Original “Psycho”. It discusses the case and its legacy in relation to Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. It is optional background reading, not an official Monster tie-in and not evidence that the series adapts its dramatized scenes from the book.
