Spoilers through Season 3. Maddie Nears is not dead: Janet takes over her living body, leaving Maddie’s spirit trapped at school. The other central spirits died across several decades, but official recaps do not establish every precise cause of death. Here’s what the show’s confirmed story says—and where details remain uncertain.
Who are the ghosts in School Spirits?
The show’s central group consists of students from different eras whose spirits remain connected to the school. Maddie’s investigation brings her together with them, while the mysteries of their deaths and the school’s supernatural spaces gradually overlap.
| Ghost | Era or role | Verified death details | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maddie Nears | The living teen at the center of the investigation—or so it first appears. | She did not die. Janet takes over Maddie’s body, leaving Maddie’s spirit trapped at school. | The Season 1 finale reveals the body switch; Season 2’s official recap confirms Maddie is not dead. |
| Janet Hamilton | A teen spirit whose dream was to attend college and become a scientist. | She died in a chemistry-lab fire. Mr. Martin later admits he accidentally caused it after disconnecting and reconnecting gas hoses; Janet entered while testing flint torches. | The official recap establishes these circumstances but does not provide a fuller account of the fire. |
| Wally Clark | An 1980s football star who helps Maddie. | The official recap establishes his era and role. | The reviewed official recap does not specify how he died. |
| Charley | An introverted teen ghost from the 1990s and a member of the support group. | The official recap establishes his era and role. | It does not specify his cause of death. |
| Rhonda | A sharp-tongued teen ghost associated with the 1960s and part of the support group. | The official recap establishes her era and role. | It does not specify her death circumstances. |
| Mr. Martin | A science teacher connected to the ghosts’ investigation of keys and scars. | He died in the same chemistry-lab fire as Janet. | The official recap says he accidentally caused the fire, but does not provide a detailed sequence beyond the gas hoses and Janet’s flint-torch test. |
| Yuri | A half-Russian teen ghost associated with the group. | His death is tied to the school greenhouse in the 1970s. | The recap does not identify an exact cause. It says he had been stuck at the art studio’s pottery wheel before meeting the group. |
| Quinn | A marching-band teen ghost. | Quinn died in a bus crash on school grounds in the early 2000s. | The recap does not detail the injuries or exact circumstances of the crash. |
Did Maddie die in School Spirits?
No. In the Season 1 finale, Janet takes over Maddie’s living body during an emotionally charged moment in the school boiler room. Janet leaves in Maddie’s body, while Maddie’s spirit remains in the school’s liminal afterlife state. That reversal changes the central question: Maddie is not investigating her own death, but trying to understand what happened to her body and how to get back to it. Paramount+ recaps the reveal in its official School Spirits recap.
Who is Janet, and how did she die?
Janet is a teen spirit whose ambitions were constrained by her 1950s household. She wanted to attend college and become a scientist. She died in a chemistry-lab fire alongside science teacher Mr. Martin. In the official recap, Martin admits he accidentally caused the fire by disconnecting and reconnecting gas hoses. Janet entered the lab while testing flint torches; later, she uses Maddie’s body to leave the school.

How do the keys, scars, and doors work?
The spirits’ keys are objects associated with their deaths. They can open “scars”: distorted versions of the locations where those deaths happened. The Season 2 recap describes the scars as connected, forming a map. A later Season 3 explainer adds doors to the still-developing supernatural system and reveals a further liminal forest realm. The show has not presented these afterlife rules as fully solved. See Paramount+’s official season recaps and explainer.
Season 3 also brings changes to what the ghosts can do: Quinn and Rhonda briefly become visible and audible to present-day students, and the ghosts can travel beyond the school’s boundaries. The recap does not establish how long these abilities last or their full limits.
