Roku’s Home Screen Marquee Video Ads: Where They Appear and What You Can Control

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roku’s Marquee video ads are already part of its advertising business—not a new feature merely planned for the future. Roku announced video for the Home Screen placement in 2024, reported a limited beta that year, and now sells Marquee as a video-capable ad format. The ad appears on the Roku device or TV Home Screen, not inside the video stream of Netflix or another app; Roku’s documented ad-preference controls do not clearly turn off the video version.

What Roku’s Marquee video ad is

Marquee is a prominent advertising space on the Roku Home Screen, positioned to the right of the app tiles. Roku’s advertising page describes it as occupying roughly one-third of the screen. It is a native interface ad: it appears before the viewer chooses what to watch, rather than being inserted into a program.

That distinction matters if you subscribe to an ad-free streaming plan. A Marquee ad is supplied by the platform interface, not by the streaming service’s program. The available sources do not establish how often any particular viewer will see one, or whether the experience is identical across Roku devices.

How Roku’s Marquee video ads developed

  • April 2024: Roku CEO Anthony Wood said the company planned to add video to its traditionally static Marquee placement. Contemporary coverage noted that launch timing and details such as autoplay and sound were not yet settled. Ars Technica reported on the announcement.
  • Second quarter of 2024: Roku’s shareholder letter said the video format had entered an invite-only beta. Roku reported that the beta sold out in its first month and named The Home Depot, Disney and MINI USA among early participating brands. Roku’s Q2 2024 shareholder letter.
  • June 2024: Independent coverage observed autoplay video in the former static Marquee area. That documents an example, not a guarantee that every ad or device behaves the same way. TechHive’s report.
  • FY2024 and FY2025: Roku’s FY2024 filing described the change from static display to video, and its FY2025 filing describes Marquee ads as static or video. The filings establish the format as an ongoing product, not a one-off announcement. Roku FY2024 Form 10-K; Roku FY2025 Form 10-K.
  • 2026: Roku’s advertising materials describe a redesigned Home Screen with greater Marquee visibility and richer creative, including video and autoplay capabilities. This is an expansion of an existing format, not the original launch. Roku’s description of the redesigned Home Screen.

What viewers may see—and what is not established

Placement and size

The ad occupies the Marquee area beside the app tiles; Roku’s current product description says the unit spans approximately one-third of the Home Screen. It is not described as a full-screen takeover. Its exact appearance may depend on the creative and the Home Screen experience on a given device. Roku’s Marquee product page.

Autoplay, sound and interaction

Roku now promotes autoplay-capable creative for the placement, and the June 2024 report above documented autoplay on a device. Neither fact proves that every Marquee ad always starts automatically. The sources do not establish a universal audio default, whether a viewer must focus the placement for playback to begin, or a viewer setting that disables autoplay specifically.

Roku describes the unit as a way to surface channels, content and destinations, but the cited product materials do not establish one universal result when a viewer selects an ad. The destination can depend on the campaign.

Who gets it

There is no reliable, comprehensive public rollout table covering Roku model, Roku OS version, TV manufacturer, country, account, connectivity or redesigned-Home-Screen cohort. A report from one device should not be read as proof that all Roku owners receive the same ad or behavior.

Marquee is different from ads inside shows and apps

Roku’s Marquee is a Home Screen placement. In-stream ads are separate: Roku Ads Manager describes video advertising in professionally produced streaming content, generally in pre-roll or mid-roll positions. Those ads run in programming; Marquee appears on the interface before playback. Roku Ads Manager’s ad-placement guide.

Roku’s developer documentation also describes video advertising in apps built for its platform, including use of the Roku Advertising Framework. It states that 30% of advertising inventory is routed to Roku under the documented framework; that is a rule concerning app video-ad inventory, not a description of Marquee. Roku’s video-advertising documentation for developers.

Can you turn off Marquee video ads?

Roku’s documented controls are at Home → Settings → Privacy → Advertising. Roku says these preferences let viewers manage certain ad preferences and hide individual ads, but limits the controls described on its support page to non-video banner ads in Roku menus and screensavers. The page does not establish a supported way to disable Marquee video ads or video autoplay. Roku’s ad-preferences support page.

Why Roku is expanding Home Screen advertising

Roku’s filings place Home Screen ads within its platform-monetization strategy. Video gives advertisers a moving format in a prominent interface location, while the company says Marquee can promote content, channels and other destinations and can attract advertisers beyond media and entertainment. Those are Roku’s stated product aims, not independent evidence that viewers find the ads unobtrusive.

Scale helps explain the business case. Roku’s FY2025 filing reported 145.6 billion streaming hours across its platform in 2025. That figure describes platform-wide streaming activity; it is not a Marquee audience count. Separately, Roku’s product page claims its Home Screen reaches more than 125 million people daily in U.S. households, based on Roku internal data for Q4 2024. That is a company-reported audience figure, not independent measurement.

What the format means for advertisers

Roku markets Marquee as a targeted, branded native ad unit. Its product page lists direct, programmatic, packaged and Roku Ads Manager buying routes, and gives a four-to-five-week turnaround. These are product-page claims and do not amount to a public rate card or guarantee of delivery to every Roku device. Advertisers seeking ordinary in-stream video should distinguish that inventory from the custom Home Screen placement; Roku’s Ads Manager placement guide describes the former separately.

  • Simple remote: Incredibly easy to use, this remote features shortcut buttons to popular streaming channels

For viewers, the important change is narrower than a full-screen commercial takeover but more noticeable than a static tile: a formerly static Home Screen ad can now use video and autoplay-capable creative. The actual experience is not established as uniform across Roku’s devices or audiences.
