Road House (2024) is a loose reimagining of the 1989 action film, not a sequel: Jake Gyllenhaal plays Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter who takes a bouncer job at a Florida Keys roadhouse. It leans into pulpy action and knowingly outsized energy. The Associated Press’s Mark Kennedy sums up that balance: “It knows it’s silly, but it’s still a good time.”
Is the new Road House any good?
For viewers looking for a broad, energetic action movie rather than a careful recreation of the original, the remake has a clear appeal. Its premise gives Dalton a modern fighting background, and the Florida Keys setting shifts the story away from the original’s particular atmosphere. TIME calls it a “loose but lively reimagining,” while the AP review praises its knowingly silly approach.

That silliness is part of the pitch, not a promise of subtle realism. The AP describes point-of-view camera work and bottle-smashing stunts as elements of the film’s action; those are the critic’s observations about its style. The soundtrack also ranges from zydeco to R&B and bar-band music, as TIME notes, helping give the remake a distinct sense of place.
How does the 2024 film compare with the 1989 original?
The remake keeps the broad idea of a bouncer protecting a roadhouse, but recasts Dalton as an ex-UFC fighter and relocates the story to the Florida Keys. It is best understood as a loose reimagining, not a beat-for-beat return to the earlier film.

| Comparison | Road House (2024) | Road House (1989) |
|---|---|---|
| Dalton’s background | An ex-UFC fighter, according to Prime Video and the AP. | The supplied sources do not establish a detailed comparison of his backstory. |
| Setting | A roadhouse in the Florida Keys. | The supplied sources do not provide a detailed setting comparison. |
| Tone and action | Critics describe a lively, knowingly silly action style; the AP highlights point-of-view camera work and bottle-smashing stunts. | A review excerpt cited on Rotten Tomatoes says the original’s “gonzo magic” is missing from the remake. That is the view of the excerpt’s reviewer, not an institutional Rotten Tomatoes verdict. |
The comparison has a limit: these sources establish the new film’s broad changes and some critics’ impressions, not a scene-by-scene account of how the two films differ. If the original’s eccentric, cult-film quality is what you value most, at least one review suggests the remake will not reproduce it. If you want a fresh action film that borrows the title and central bouncer premise, the 2024 version has a separate identity.

Should you watch it?
Choose the 2024 Road House for a knowingly over-the-top action romp with a new setting and a modernized Dalton. Choose the 1989 film if you are specifically seeking the original’s distinctive eccentricity: the cited review excerpt argues that its “gonzo magic” is not carried over. The remake’s strongest case is that it treats its own excess as entertainment rather than asking to be mistaken for the original.
