Surveillance footage showed University of Missouri student Riley Strain stumbling and falling on a downtown Nashville street on the night of March 8, 2024. Police later concluded that he fell down an embankment into the Cumberland River; the medical examiner ruled his death accidental, caused by drowning and ethanol intoxication. No one is reported to have witnessed the fall into the river.
What happened to Riley Strain?
Strain, 22, was visiting Nashville with University of Missouri Delta Chi fraternity brothers. After the group went out in the Broadway area on March 8, he became separated from them. A friend reported him missing on March 9.
Nashville police said their investigation found that Strain was noticeably impaired as he walked onto Gay Street beside the Cumberland River. Police reconstructed that he stepped toward an overgrown area near a steep embankment and fell into the river. The department said recent rain had raised the river and made its current swift. This was the police account of events; the reported footage and statements do not establish that anyone saw him enter the water.
What did surveillance show before he disappeared?
ABC News published a timeline based on surveillance and police video. It reported that Luke’s 32 Bridge said security escorted Strain out through the venue’s Broadway exit at 9:35 p.m. A member of his party followed him down the stairs but returned upstairs.

- About 9:47 p.m.: Police video showed him crossing a street with a group while checking his phone. He briefly stopped and changed direction, then walked behind the group.
- About 9:50 p.m.: Officer Reginald Young encountered him on Gay Street while responding to an unrelated car burglary. Asked how he was doing, Strain replied, “I’m good, how are you?”
The footage documents signs of difficulty walking earlier that night, but it does not show the fall into the river. The venue’s account of escorting him out is separate from what police video showed later on the street.
Where was Riley Strain found?
On March 17, two volunteer searchers found Strain’s bank card on the embankment between Gay Street and the river, near Riverfront Park. His body was recovered from the Cumberland River in West Nashville on March 22, about eight miles (12.8 kilometers) west of downtown.

What was the official cause of death?
The Davidson County Medical Examiner classified the cause of death as drowning and ethanol intoxication and the manner of death as accidental. Nashville police announced the finding on June 18, 2024. The Associated Press reported that the autopsy recorded a blood alcohol result of 0.228 and also found delta-9 THC in Strain’s system. The autopsy result is a postmortem finding; it does not establish his precise impairment level at a particular earlier time.
Was Riley Strain overserved?
Tennessee’s Alcoholic Beverage Commission conducted a trace investigation into Luke’s 32 Bridge and possible alcohol-service violations. Its report describes an April 16 review of video and records from four venues. The investigator found no clear evidence that Strain was visibly intoxicated when served, and on June 27 the report recorded a request to close the investigation.

That regulatory finding concerns the evidence about service at the venues. It is distinct from police’s account of Strain’s condition later that night and the medical examiner’s postmortem findings. It neither overturns those findings nor establishes exactly when he became impaired. A recollection in the regulator’s report about how much he may have consumed was qualified and uncertain, so it should not be treated as a verified drink count.
