These Hollywood performers have well-known parents—and, in several cases, documented credits working with them. The “nepo baby” label is shorthand for a debate about family connections and perceived access, not proof that any individual lacked talent or that a particular role was secured through a parent.
Hollywood performers and their famous parents
The pairings below focus on documented family relationships and shared work, rather than ranking who benefited most from their connections. A credit alongside a parent establishes collaboration; by itself, it does not show why a production cast someone.
| Performer | Famous parent or parents | Connection and shared work | Comment on the label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maya Hawke | Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman | Direct parent-child connection. Maya and Ethan worked together on Wildcat, which Ethan directed. The Los Angeles Times discussed the film in its interview with them. | Maya said she had felt insecure about the label while they were shooting, adding, “But the internet doesn’t have a lot of nuances.” Ethan joked, “Put simply, I’m a nepo dad!” He also said, “If someone wants to criticize us for working together, that’s totally fair.” |
| Zoë Kravitz | Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet | Direct parent-child connection. The Guardian identifies her as the daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz and actor Lisa Bonet. | No comment on the label is included in the cited reporting. |
| Dakota Johnson | Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson; granddaughter of Tippi Hedren | Direct parent-child connection, with another generation of acting in the family. Dakota appeared with her mother in Crazy in Alabama as a child and later in The High Note. | No comment on the label is included in the cited reporting. |
| Maude Apatow | Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann | Direct parent-child connection. TIME reports that Maude and her sister Iris acted alongside their mother in films directed by their father. | No comment on the label is included in the cited reporting. |
The examples are not a definitive list of Hollywood families. TIME’s feature counts 28 parent-child acting pairs in its own selection; that is a feature count, not a measure of how common nepotism is in the industry.
What “nepo baby” means—and what it does not
The phrase comes from “nepotism” and is commonly applied to people in entertainment with famous or successful relatives. The Guardian and SBS describe it as a cultural shorthand used to discuss perceived advantages—such as recognition, access, or introductions—not as a formal category with a single agreed threshold.

That distinction matters. A famous parent-child relationship or a shared screen credit can be documented. The claim that a particular connection caused a specific casting decision requires evidence about that decision; the family relationship alone does not supply it. Nor can it settle the hypothetical question of how a person’s career would have unfolded without family ties.

The public comments in the reporting show different parts of the argument. Ethan Hawke acknowledged that criticism of working with his daughter was fair, while Maya described feeling insecure about the label during the making of Wildcat. Their remarks came in a Los Angeles Times interview while they were promoting the film.
Rank #2
Lily-Rose Depp, quoted by SBS from an interview with Elle, made a distinction between getting an initial opportunity and doing the work afterward: “Maybe you get your foot in the door, but you still just have your foot in the door. There’s a lot of work that comes after that.”
Singer Lily Allen widened the discussion beyond entertainment. SBS quoted her arguing that readers should also worry about people with family connections working in law firms, banks, and politics when considering real-world consequences and lost opportunities. Together, these comments underline that the label raises questions about access and fairness, but does not answer them for every individual case.

What the side-by-side comparison can establish
- Family relationship: The named parent-child links, and Dakota Johnson’s connection to her grandmother Tippi Hedren, are reported facts.
- Shared work: The listed collaborations document that relatives worked together; they do not establish the reasons behind casting or direction.
- Career judgment: A label cannot, on its own, measure a performer’s ability or explain an entire career.
