FBI Season 7, Episode 9, “Descent,” turns an investigation into an assistant U.S. attorney’s death into a race to stop terrorists from crashing multiple commercial airplanes. The episode’s review listing gives it a favorable 7/10, while the story’s quieter counterweight is Stuart Scola confronting the identification of his brother’s remains.

What happens in “Descent”?

In the CBS synopsis, the team’s investigation into the death of an assistant U.S. attorney uncovers an airline whistleblower scandal. The case escalates into a plot to crash multiple commercial airplanes, shifting the episode from a murder investigation to an urgent effort to prevent a mass-casualty attack.

That scale gives the episode its disaster-story hook: the team must stop a threat unfolding across commercial aviation, not simply solve the original crime. CBS’s synopsis establishes the premise but does not provide more detail about the plot’s mechanics.

What does the review say about the “Night Agent” star?

Rotten Tomatoes lists one critic review: Brittany Frederick of CBR rated the episode 7/10, under the headline “A Night Agent star makes this disaster story work.” The headline frames a performer associated with The Night Agent as a strength of the disaster storyline. The listing does not identify that performer or provide enough of Frederick’s full review to establish her specific reasoning.

A 7/10 is positive without suggesting an unqualified endorsement; that is an interpretation of the score, not an explanation supplied by Frederick. With only the headline and rating available in the listing, it would be misleading to attribute particular praise or criticism to her.

How Scola’s grief changes the episode’s scale

Alongside the aircraft threat, “Descent” gives Stuart Scola a personal development. In an interview with TheWrap, actor John Boyd describes Scola and his girlfriend, Nina, opening a medical examiner’s letter that confirms his brother’s remains have been positively identified in the World Trade Center rubble.

Boyd connects that news to Scola’s effort to reach a terrorist whose own loss has turned toward revenge. The parallel brings the episode’s large-scale danger into contact with a story about grief and what a person does with it. Boyd described the identification as a meaningful step in Scola’s mourning: “His brother’s memory is in a different place. It means he can move forward. It is the next step in the journey of mourning, and that is something that we have wanted for Scola for a really long time.”

Boyd also noted that the story draws on a shared national history rather than requiring extensive explanation: “We do not have to spoon feed the story to the audience, because it is such a part of America’s story and Scola’s story.”
