The six-episode ZEE5 thriller may suit viewers after a quick, familiar crime story, but critics found its crowded plotting, rushed pacing and conventional presentation blunt its impact.
What is Regai about?
In Regai, Sub-Inspector Vetri investigates a chain of suspicious deaths that includes the death of his friend Amudhan. The case develops from unsettling clues—including severed hands—into allegations that a medical team concealed clinical-trial participants’ deaths by staging them as accidents. That setup gives the series a clear investigative engine while keeping the central mystery intact.
The series is inspired by crime writer Rajesh Kumar’s work; the available sources do not establish a specific source-book title. Kumar described his approach to crime writing in an OTTplay article published on 18 November 2025: “Every crime story begins in the human mind before it reaches the page.” This is Kumar speaking about crime stories, not a line from the show.
Does the investigation make for a compelling mystery?
The case is the strongest part of the series for several reviewers. Scroll.in found Vetri’s persistent investigation the most interesting element, while Cinema Express appreciated its old-school whodunnit ingredients: introducing victims and using characters’ professions to move the plot forward. Those elements give viewers clues and connections to follow rather than relying entirely on the eventual reveal.

But the investigation does not consistently translate into suspense. Cinema Express said the number of details and subplots makes it difficult to keep track of victims and storylines, and judged the ending predictable. OTTplay’s review argued that the medical-trial context arrives late, leaving the short series feeling rushed. The mystery has a workable foundation, but the reviews suggest the storytelling does not always give its clues enough room to land.
How well is Regai executed?
Reviewers’ reservations extend beyond the plot. Scroll.in criticized the staging as resembling a television serial and found the motive less shocking than the premise promises. India Today also noted familiar tropes, a daily-soap presentation and uneven technical work. It nevertheless described the series as an easy watch for crime fans. Taken together, the criticism points to a conventional, uneven thriller rather than a uniformly unsuccessful one: some stretches can engage, but the presentation and construction limit its force.

Consider Regai if you want a brief, accessible whodunnit and enjoy following a police investigation through familiar crime-story turns. It is a less certain choice if you want tightly controlled pacing, a consistently clear web of clues or a thriller likely to linger after its reveal. The distinction is reflected in publication-specific ratings: OTTplay gave it 2/5, while Cinema Express and The Times of India each rated it 2.5/5. These are critics’ judgments, not audience-survey results.
How long is it, and where can you watch?
ZEE5’s listing gives the release date as 28 November 2025 and lists six episodes with Tamil and Hindi audio. Its episode durations are 21, 20, 22, 25, 18 and 29 minutes, or about 135 minutes in total when added together. That catalog total is more precise than the roughly 25-minute episode description in India Today’s review. A pre-release OTTplay article had estimated seven episodes; the post-release ZEE5 listing gives six, and the sources do not explain the change.
