Pluto TV’s free live channels were added to Google TV’s Live tab in the United States in December 2021. Google’s announcement also promised six months of Peacock Premium at no extra cost when customers activated a new Google TV or other Android TV OS device in the U.S. That Peacock promotion was explicitly limited-time; the announcement does not show that it is still available.
What Google announced in December 2021
On December 6, 2021, Google said Pluto TV programming would appear in the Google TV Live tab for U.S. viewers, with the rollout reaching Google TV devices over the following weeks. The integration was designed to put Pluto TV’s free, ad-supported live channels alongside other live viewing options instead of requiring viewers to open Pluto TV separately.
The same announcement included this historical offer from Google TV Director of Product Management Ben Serridge: “For a limited time, when you activate a new Google TV (or other Android TV OS device) in the U.S., you can get Peacock Premium at no extra cost.” The wording describes a six-month benefit tied to activation of a new device. It does not establish an ongoing promotion, a universal eligibility rule, or availability outside the United States.
Is the Peacock Premium offer still available?
There is no evidence in the announcement that the six-month Peacock Premium promotion continues today. Treat it as a 2021 historical deal unless a current Google or Peacock offer page confirms otherwise. A Google TV device may still provide access to free live channels, but buying one now should not be treated as a guaranteed way to receive Peacock Premium.

How to watch Pluto TV channels on Google TV now
Google’s current U.S. help guidance lists Pluto TV among the apps that provide live channels at no charge. On supported Google TV devices, viewers can open the Live tab to browse available channels. Google also directs viewers to Google TV Freeplay for free live programming.
- Turn on a supported Google TV device and connect it to the internet.
- From the Google TV home screen, open the Live tab.
- Browse the free live-channel listings and select a Pluto TV channel when it appears.
- If the device presents free programming through Google TV Freeplay, open Freeplay and choose the channel there.
Availability can vary by country, device, account configuration and Google TV software version. The current help material, rather than the 2021 launch announcement, is the appropriate reference for today’s menus and setup behavior.

Did Pluto TV require its app?
A contemporaneous report initially suggested that the integration worked without installing Pluto TV, then corrected that statement and said the Pluto TV app was required for the 2021 experience. That detail belongs to the original rollout and should not override Google’s current setup instructions. If Pluto TV channels do not appear, follow the on-screen prompt to install or update the Pluto TV app, sign in if requested, and check the Live tab again.
How Google TV’s free-channel lineup changed
Pluto TV was not the only provider added to Google TV’s free live experience. In April 2023, Google announced that Tubi, Plex and Haystack News were joining Pluto TV in the Live tab and reported more than 800 channels at that time. That figure is dated to the April 2023 announcement, not a current channel count.

What this means if you are choosing a streaming device
If you already own compatible Google TV hardware, you do not need another device merely to use the Live tab or access Pluto TV listings. Someone without supported hardware may need a Google TV device, but the sources do not establish a current model recommendation, price or Peacock eligibility. Choose hardware based on current specifications and support in your region rather than on the expired-or-uncertain 2021 promotion.
The cost concern behind the announcement
Google said in 2021 that 67% of TV streamers were concerned about how much they would pay for streaming in the future. Google attributed that figure to its own research, but the announcement did not provide the underlying study or methodology. It should therefore be read as a dated Google-reported finding, not as a current industry measurement.

Practical troubleshooting
Pluto TV is missing from Live
- Confirm that the device is a Google TV model and that its software is up to date.
- Check whether your country is supported; the launch and current guidance cited here are U.S.-focused.
- Install or update the Pluto TV app if Google TV requests it.
- Restart the device, then revisit Live or Freeplay.
You expected Peacock Premium
The six-month Peacock benefit was a limited-time 2021 activation offer. Check the terms shown during a current device activation or on an active Google or Peacock promotion page; do not assume the benefit is included with a new purchase.
Bottom line
Pluto TV’s integration with Google TV’s Live tab is a real U.S. feature first announced in 2021 and still reflected in Google’s current U.S. help guidance. The free channels remain the relevant part of the feature today. The accompanying six-month Peacock Premium promise was explicitly limited-time, and its continued availability has not been established.
