Yes, Plex has overhauled its app experience—but it is no longer an upcoming change. Announced in November 2024, the redesign began reaching mobile users in March 2025 and continued across TV platforms into 2026. The new interface changes navigation and discovery as well as appearance, and its features do not arrive everywhere at once. If your library, music, photos, or playback controls seem to have moved or disappeared, the answer may depend on which Plex app you use.
What Plex changed
Plex describes the project as a rebuilt app experience, not just a new coat of paint. Its stated aim was to move toward a more unified codebase across platforms while bringing personal libraries, Plex’s free and on-demand content, discovery, and social features into a more consistent experience. The interface gives artwork and recommendations more room, centralizes account information, and changes how you navigate to your own libraries. Plex says the shared architecture should make it easier to deliver improvements across apps; that goal does not mean every app has identical controls or features. (Plex’s announcement)
For people who use Plex mainly as a front end for their own movie, TV, or music collection, the practical question is whether the redesign makes those libraries easier to reach. For viewers who also use Plex’s free streaming and live content, the new discovery-oriented layout may put more of those options in view. The trade-off is that familiar shortcuts and the old navigation model may have moved, while some features have lagged behind on particular platforms.
When did it arrive?
There was no single launch date across every device. Plex announced the experience and opened an early mobile preview on November 22, 2024. It expanded preview testing to Apple TV in January 2025. The main mobile rollout began March 31, 2025; Roku availability for everyone followed in September 2025. Plex previewed revised Roku navigation in November 2025. It announced the Fire TV rollout in March 2026 and confirmed it had started on April 24, 2026. These dates describe rollout milestones, not a guarantee that every device received an update on the same day.

That timeline matters if you are comparing screens in one household: two Plex apps can have different navigation, release timing, and feature availability even when both are using the redesigned experience.

Finding your personal libraries
The redesign makes libraries a more explicit part of the experience, but the route to them depends on the app. On big-screen apps, Plex provides a navigation sidebar or source list that can generally be customized: open the navigation area, choose its customization option, then add, remove, or reorder the available sources. Labels and remote-control steps vary by device, so use Plex’s platform guide if the controls on your screen differ.
Look for options to favorite libraries you use often and to remove sources you do not want in navigation. This can make personal movies or television easier to reach and reduce the prominence of Plex’s free streaming or Live TV sources. The server owner’s view may not match a shared user’s: libraries can be absent because the owner has not shared them, permissions changed, or the viewer is signed into a different Plex account. Some advanced library functions may also require Plex Pass.

On Roku, Plex’s later navigation preview retained top navigation and introduced overlay menus intended to avoid pushing content sideways or reloading it when opening menus. Plex said it was not returning to the old sidebar layout. Those are Plex’s design aims, not independent performance measurements, and the preview description should not be treated as a promise that every Plex platform behaves the same way.
Why something may seem to be missing
A feature that is not visible after an update is not necessarily gone from Plex altogether. It may have moved, may not yet be available in that platform’s version, or may depend on your account or server.
- It moved: Check the redesigned navigation and customization options before concluding a library or control was removed.
- It is not supported in that release: The early redesign preview lacked offline support and casting. Plex intended to address gaps during the preview, but that does not establish the status of every feature in every current app.
- It has not arrived on your platform: Fire TV, for example, launched the new experience with music support but without photo-library support. Plex has said music and photo support would be restored in mobile and TV apps, but availability remains platform- and release-dependent.
- It is an account restriction: A Plex Pass requirement is different from a UI change. The same is true of remote-streaming policy.
- It is a server or permissions issue: An older server, unavailable server, changed sharing permission, or wrong signed-in account can make libraries or playback unavailable.
Do not infer that music, photos, downloads, or casting have been permanently removed just because one app does not show them. Check that platform’s current release notes or Plex announcement before changing your setup or downgrading.

Does the redesign require Plex Pass?
Do not treat the redesigned interface itself as universally Plex Pass-only. Plex’s free-versus-paid guide describes the Plex Media Server, local playback of personal media, and Plex’s ad-supported on-demand and Live TV services as part of the basic free experience. Plex Pass unlocks additional premium features; DVR recording and some advanced capabilities are examples of paid functionality. Preview access or a particular feature may have its own conditions.
Remote playback is a separate question. Plex has introduced a Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass requirement for remote streaming of personal media on some client platforms, with the rollout extending beyond Roku. Remote means watching when you are not on the same local network as the Plex Media Server; local playback remains free. Remote Watch Pass is for remote personal-media streaming and does not include the wider Plex Pass benefits. A subscription prompt appearing alongside a new interface can make the two changes look like one, but they are separate product policies.
Plex’s redesign period also overlapped with a price change unrelated to the interface: its new Lifetime Plex Pass price became US$749.99 on July 1, 2026. Plex said monthly and annual prices were unchanged in its May 2026 announcement. The lifetime figure is in US dollars, and prices in other currencies may differ. Check these things if an update breaks your routine
- Update the Plex app through your device’s app store, then reopen it.
- Check the server version. For full support of the redesigned mobile app, Plex specified Plex Media Server 1.41.2 or later. This is a mobile-app requirement, not a universal minimum for every Plex client.
- Confirm the signed-in account. A different account may not have access to the same servers and libraries.
- Inspect navigation customization. A library or source may be hidden or lower in the list rather than deleted.
- Verify sharing and server status. Ask the server owner to confirm that the server is online and your account still has permission.
- Separate local from remote playback. If you are away from the server’s local network, check whether the account has the applicable remote-streaming access and whether the server is configured for remote access.
- Check platform-specific feature availability. A missing photo, music, casting, or download option may reflect the release on that device, not a permanent change to Plex everywhere.
- Restart the app and server after updates. If the issue remains, consult the relevant Plex support page or platform announcement before trying to roll back.
Is the new Plex experience better?
It depends on what you want Plex to do. The redesign’s more unified presentation and prominent discovery may suit households that use both personal libraries and Plex’s free content. Users who prefer a direct, low-friction route to a small set of private libraries may find the new navigation busier or less familiar. Artwork-heavy screens and relocated controls can take adjustment, and a common design does not guarantee that every feature works on every platform.
Plex’s stated benefits—more consistent apps, easier discovery, and a codebase intended to support improvements across devices—are goals, not independently measured results. The fairest assessment is platform-specific: check how your libraries are surfaced, whether the functions you depend on are present, and whether you are encountering a UI change or a separate account policy.
