Lord John returns with news of danger to William
The episode opens with a flashback to London in 1775, where Lord John and his brother Hal clash over the American colonies. Three years later, in Pennsylvania, John is captured and uses the name Bertram Armstrong to swear loyalty to the United States and save himself.
In Philadelphia, Claire treats injured prisoners and finds John among them. He has been captured more than once and has a serious eye injury. Jamie and Claire help care for him, and he explains how he survived. John remains under house arrest, but a visit from Percival Beauchamp brings a more immediate concern: Captain Richardson intends to put William in danger, apparently as part of a scheme against the Grey family.

- The American Revolution has arrived, and the Frasers must navigate the perils of war to protect what they have built. They learn that sometimes to defend what you love, you have to leave it behind. As the conflict draws them into the heart of this fight for independence, Jamie and Claire arefaced with impossible decisions that have the potential to tear their family apart.
Claire says she already suspects Richardson is a rebel spy. John wants to reach William; Jamie arranges his parole and sends Ian with him. The warning makes John’s return more than a reunion: his experience of captivity has brought him information that could help protect Jamie’s son.
William chooses to protect Jane and Fanny
At the British camp, Jane arrives with her younger sister, Fanny, asking William for protection. The sisters have fled a Philadelphia brothel after Captain Harkness returned and threatened Fanny. Jane later tells William she stabbed Harkness while defending her sister. The danger to Fanny involves attempted sexual exploitation of a child.
Rank #2
William chooses not to hand Jane over and asks her to stay. His decision gives his military storyline a personal consequence: he is not only carrying out orders, but deciding whom he will protect when duty and another person’s safety collide.
Separately, William delivers correspondence and receives a suspiciously warm invitation from the Hessian commander. The episode leaves that interaction shadowed by Percival’s warning about Richardson’s plan.

Washington’s dinner brings the war into Jamie and Claire’s home
Jamie and Claire host George Washington and officers including Lafayette in Philadelphia. Lafayette brings Claire eels, which she struggles to eat, and had promised her cheese as well. Washington gives her a flag; when Claire asks about its star design, her unusual knowledge of the future is once again close to the surface.
The dinner also puts Jamie’s changing responsibilities in view. He is now in command of a much larger force than he has led before. As he and Claire discuss the burden of that role, the episode connects the public scale of the war with the private pressure on their family.

In the 1980s, Brianna returns to Lallybroch and finds intruders inside. She arms herself and fires as Ernie and Fiona arrive with the children. Their escape reveals Rob Cameron as part of the threat.
After the confrontation, Brianna considers taking the children to Roger. Her story is the episode’s most immediate home-front crisis: unlike Jamie and Claire’s wartime dangers, this threat has entered the place meant to shelter her family.

How the episode’s three strands connect
Each storyline turns on a protection choice under pressure. John and Jamie move to protect William from a political plot; William shelters Jane and Fanny from violence; Brianna responds directly to intruders threatening her home and children. The Revolutionary War shapes the consequences of those decisions, from military orders and divided loyalties to the dangers that follow the family across time.
STARZ’s short synopsis foregrounds John’s disappearance and Brianna’s danger, while the episode also gives substantial attention to William’s choice and Jamie’s growing command. The scene details above are reported in contemporaneous recaps from TVLine and Elle; TV Insider’s preview also covers the Washington dinner and flag conversation. These are secondary accounts, not an official transcript.
