Spoilers for “Carnal Knowledge,” Outlander Season 7, Episode 12. The episode brings William’s discovery that Jamie is his biological father to a head while Jamie returns to learn that Claire and Lord John slept together when both believed him dead. Their Philadelphia-era conflicts drive the hour; Roger and Brianna’s 1730s Scotland storyline is absent.
Jamie learns what happened between Claire and Lord John
Jamie returns from France carrying messages for the Continental Army, evades a Redcoat search, and escapes with Lord John Grey. In the woods, John tells him that he and Claire had sex while they both believed Jamie was dead. John says they were thinking of Jamie. Jamie responds by beating him, but Continental soldiers interrupt and take John into custody.
Later, back in Philadelphia, Claire and Jamie talk through the night she spent with John. Claire explains that they were both grieving Jamie; Jamie tells her about his jealousy and why he attacked John. They reconcile, even as John’s separate crisis continues.
William’s anger spills over
Claire answers his questions
At Lord John’s home, William asks Claire about his parentage and Geneva’s relationship with Jamie. Claire tells him Jamie did not assault Geneva and describes their relationship as a brief form of love. William is hurt by years of concealment and struggles to fit the truth into his sense of who he is. He smashes furnishings and a mirror before leaving.

As the conflict draws them into the heart of this fight for independence, Jamie and Claire arefaced with impossible decisions that have the potential to tear their family apart.
Ian and Rachel become targets
William later encounters Ian and Rachel as they return from a Quaker visit. He reacts badly to their engagement and to Ian’s not knowing William’s secret. William punches Ian and has him arrested. When William kisses Rachel, she slaps him and spits at him.
Jamie later orders William to secure Ian’s release, threatening to reveal William’s identity to his superiors. William relents and frees Ian.
Rank #2
Jane’s encounter with William
At a brothel, William mistreats a woman introduced as Arabella, and she throws him out. The recap later identifies her as Jane. William returns to apologize and says he does not intend to have sex with her. He insists he will keep his word; Jane then initiates sex. The sequence matters: William refuses, and Jane initiates rather than the encounter being presented as mutually initiated.
Lord John’s escape attempt ends on a cliffhanger
After the beating, Denzell Hunter treats Lord John. Continental officers suspect John of being a spy and take him to their camp. Worried that John may be executed, Denzell gives him a knife to help him escape. John makes his attempt as soldiers pursue him and shots are fired. The recap ends without establishing whether he gets away.
