What happens to JJ in the Season 4 finale?
In “Blue Crown,” the Pogues’ search takes JJ (Rudy Pankow) to Morocco, where he retrieves the legendary crown. Chandler Groff threatens Kiara, and JJ gives him the treasure in an effort to save her. Groff stabs him anyway, then escapes with the crown. The Pogues lay JJ to rest and turn toward revenge. Why did the creators kill JJ?
The creators presented JJ’s death as a planned story decision, not an on-screen mystery left unresolved. Pankow sees the fatal choice as consistent with JJ’s defining loyalty: he repeatedly puts his friends ahead of himself. He said, “He lives his life to the utmost fullest, and I don’t think he regrets any part of it.”
Co-creator Shannon Burke draws a distinction between Groff’s motive and the practical outcome: Groff already has the crown, so killing JJ is unnecessary. Burke described the stabbing as an act of spite meant to make viewers hate Groff. The scene’s cruelty is therefore part of the point; JJ’s self-sacrifice does not persuade Groff to spare him.

Who is Chandler Groff to JJ?
Groff is JJ’s biological father, and Larissa Genrette is his biological mother. The family revelation begins with a letter from Wes Genrette telling JJ to ask Luke about “Albatross.” Luke then tells JJ the truth about his parents. That connection gives the final confrontation an added personal dimension: Groff is not merely the antagonist holding Kiara at knifepoint, but JJ’s father. What did the creators tease about Season 5?
In the 2024 interview, co-creator Josh Pate said, “We’re planning a story of redemption, and a season that embodies the friendship that JJ had come to represent.” The tease pointed toward the Pogues carrying JJ’s influence forward rather than treating his death as a story that ended with the finale. Pankow’s comments likewise frame JJ’s last act as the culmination of a life organized around his friends.

What became of that Season 5 tease?
The forward-looking comments were made before the final season was available. As of October 4, 2026, Netflix’s official Season 5 guide identifies it as the series’ final season and says all 10 episodes are available. Its broad premise follows the Pogues as they mourn JJ, seek revenge, and try to reclaim their future. In that sense, the redemption-and-friendship framing is a useful description of the direction the creators announced, while the fifth season is now the completed continuation rather than a future tease.
