Choose OBS Studio if you need a visual workspace for scenes, sources, and interactive adjustments; choose FFmpeg if your stream is a predictable media pipeline you can express and supervise with commands. Neither tool has a documented reliability advantage for 24/7 streaming. For either, test the actual VPS, media, and route to YouTube before relying on it unattended.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your workflow?

This is a workflow choice, not a reliability ranking: available official sources do not establish that OBS or FFmpeg is inherently more reliable for a continuous broadcast.
Set YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and says to choose a quality that the available connection can sustain. Its bitrate figures are ingest recommendations, not proof that a particular India-region VPS can sustain that upload around the clock.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Video: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 over RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps in its advanced settings.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.

Allow headroom for audio and protocol overhead, and test sustained outbound capacity from the VPS itself. A speed-test peak is not the same as stable 24/7 capacity.
Prepare and supervise a 24/7 stream
- Configure the encoder: In OBS or FFmpeg, set the YouTube-compatible protocol, codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings above. Follow the tool’s own documentation for its controls or command syntax.
- Connect it to YouTube: Use the stream key and ingest destination provided by YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube rather than continuing to use a compromised key.
- Test representative content: Send audio and movement similar to the real program. YouTube says Live Control Room detects encoder settings; confirm the preview appears correctly and check stream health and messages before the event.
- Monitor both ends: Watch YouTube’s stream health as well as the VPS process and outbound connection. Decide in advance how an encoder exit, network interruption, bad input file, or host reboot will be detected and handled.
- Keep an independent recording if needed: YouTube’s archive guidance warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Verify the current guidance and do not assume a very long broadcast will leave a durable platform copy.
Teams that need programmatic health checks can consult the YouTube Live Streaming API reference, which documents stream resources and status-related fields. API integration is optional; basic encoder setup does not require it.

Check the Indian VPS, not just the advertised tier
A server’s location in India does not establish its upload capacity, traffic allowance, latency, or uptime. Evaluate the named provider and plan against the stream you intend to run:
- Confirm the region and route to YouTube ingest, then run a sustained upload test from the actual VPS.
- Check whether outbound traffic is included, capped, or billed separately. Estimate monthly egress from your selected bitrate plus audio and protocol overhead.
- Measure CPU use for the chosen encoding and filtering workload; verify whether hardware encoding is actually exposed to the instance.
- If recording locally, check storage capacity and write performance.
- Review reboot behavior, process supervision, logs, monitoring, support, and service limits.
- Choose the server for stable encoder-to-ingest operation. YouTube handles downstream transcoding and delivery; the VPS is not automatically the server delivering video to each viewer.
