For a looping 1080p YouTube Live stream, set OBS to 1920×1080 output, use 30 fps as the lower-load starting point, and configure the encoder for CBR with a two-second keyframe interval. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5–14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 6–17 Mbps at 1080p60. Choose a bitrate your connection and computer can sustain continuously, then test the loop and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it.
Recommended OBS settings for a 1080p YouTube loop
These are ingest settings: they describe the signal OBS sends to YouTube, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive an identical 1080p rendition. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers.
| Setting | Recommended starting point | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Base (Canvas) Resolution | Match the canvas to the video and layout you are composing. | Change it if your scene layout needs a different working size. Avoid accidental scaling that softens the picture. |
| Output (Scaled) Resolution | 1920Ă—1080 | Use this when the goal is a 1080p signal to YouTube. |
| Common FPS Values | 30 fps | Choose 60 fps for visibly smoother motion only if your computer can encode it reliably for the full stream. OBS cautions that 60-fps streaming can be much more taxing than 30 fps. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) | YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Keep adaptive keyframe behavior from overriding that target. |
| Protocol | RTMPS, where available | YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; for stereo, 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz | Use an audio configuration supported by your OBS encoder and YouTube ingest setup. |
Choose 30 or 60 fps, then set the bitrate
Use 30 fps for static or slow-moving loops
For documentary footage with modest movement, ambient shots, still artwork, or a slow pan, 30 fps is a sensible first choice. It reduces encoder and bandwidth demands compared with 60 fps. A source recorded at 50 or 60 fps does not by itself require a 60-fps stream; choose based on the motion you want to preserve and what your system can sustain.
Use 60 fps when motion warrants it
Fast movement can look smoother at 60 fps, but the computer must keep encoding without dropped frames or overload throughout the broadcast. Test the complete setup rather than assuming that a brief successful start proves it will remain stable over a long loop.

YouTube’s recommended video bitrate ranges
| Codec | 1080p30 | 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 5–14 Mbps | 6–17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 4–10 Mbps | 4–12 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s current recommendations for live encoder settings, accessed in 2026; they are not guarantees of stable delivery on a particular connection. AV1 or HEVC may not be available or compatible in every OBS and ingest setup, so confirm support for your selected encoder before using those ranges. For H.264, start within the relevant range at a value your sustained upload capacity can support with headroom. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health rather than simply choosing the top of the range.
Configure OBS and make the video repeat
- Set the video size and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920Ă—1080, choose a base canvas that matches your composition, and set Common FPS Values to 30 or 60 according to the motion and sustained system capacity.
- Set encoder output. Open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder for CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a video bitrate in YouTube’s range for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. OBS interface options can vary by version and encoder. If the encoder exposes profile or preset controls, use a supported choice the machine can sustain; do not raise quality settings at the cost of stable output.
- Choose an encoder the computer can sustain. A supported hardware encoder can reduce CPU load, while software encoding relies more heavily on the CPU. Availability and performance depend on the particular machine and encoder generation. There is no general requirement to buy a GPU or other hardware just to loop a video.
- Add the recorded video as a source. In your scene, add a Media Source and select the video file. In that source’s properties, enable its loop or repeat option; wording and placement may vary between OBS versions. Check the current properties in your installed release instead of relying on a fixed menu label.
- Set up YouTube ingest. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select the broadcast and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect using the available account connection or stream-key method. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use RTMPS when the available setup supports it.
- Test privately or unlisted before depending on the loop. Start the OBS stream and confirm that YouTube receives it. Let the video reach its end and restart; check for a black frame, an audio gap or click, unexpected silence, and any interruption to the live output. Use footage with movement and audio similar to the planned stream so the test reflects the real workload.
- Save the setup. Save a dedicated OBS Profile for the YouTube stream. OBS Profiles store stream, video, and output settings, making it easier to restore the configuration. Keep the scene collection and media file organized as well so the correct source is available when you reopen OBS.
Check upload and stream health before a long broadcast
Compare the configured video bitrate with upload capacity that remains stable over time, not just a one-off speed result. Leave room for normal network variation and other household or office traffic. YouTube’s own advice is to test before going live and monitor stream health; use the status messages in the live control room to identify delivery or encoding trouble.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Make the test long enough to expose intermittent network issues or rising computer load.
- Use representative footage and audio; a static test image may not exercise encoding in the same way as moving video.
- Watch OBS for encoding or rendering strain and YouTube for stream-health warnings.
- If delivery is unstable, lower the bitrate within the applicable recommended range, or try 30 rather than 60 fps. Change one factor at a time and test again.
Troubleshooting a 1080p loop
YouTube reports an unstable or low-quality stream
Likely cause: The configured bitrate is too close to the connection’s sustainable upload capacity, or the connection varies. Fix: Reduce bitrate, retain upload headroom, and test again while watching YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
OBS drops frames or the computer struggles
Likely cause: The encoder cannot keep up, the selected frame rate is too demanding, or other applications are consuming resources. Fix: Close unnecessary applications, try 30 fps, and compare a supported hardware encoder with a software preset the CPU can sustain. Verify stable operation over a meaningful test rather than judging only the first moments.

The video stops instead of repeating
Likely cause: The Media Source loop/repeat option is not enabled, or the source settings differ from the expected configuration in your OBS version. Fix: Reopen that source’s properties and verify the loop setting, then test through a complete restart. Look for a black frame or audio discontinuity at the join.
The picture looks soft despite a 1080p source
Likely cause: OBS is scaling the source or canvas unexpectedly, or the stream’s bitrate is insufficient for its content. Fix: Check the canvas and output resolution, ensure the source is composed at the intended size, and test an appropriate bitrate for the selected codec and frame rate. YouTube also creates multiple viewer output formats, so the ingest setting does not mean every viewer receives the same rendition.
