If Streamlabs Desktop is using too much CPU while a video loops on YouTube, first check whether you are encoding with x264, then test a faster x264 preset or a compatible hardware encoder. If you are streaming at 1080p, try 1280Ă—720. Next, simplify the active scene and identify whether Streamlabs reports skipped, lagged, or dropped frames; each points to a different kind of problem.
These are starting points, not a diagnosis of your computer. A looping video does not by itself establish why CPU use is high. Streamlabs’ guidance also flags scene sources and overlays as possible contributors, while YouTube supports encoder-based streams made with streaming software. YouTube’s encoder-streaming guide does not specify the CPU cost of this particular setup.
Check what kind of performance problem you have
Before changing settings, note your current encoder, output resolution and frame rate, CPU and GPU use, and any frame warnings shown in Streamlabs Desktop. High CPU use alone does not identify the bottleneck. Streamlabs distinguishes among three warning types:
- Skipped frames: commonly indicate encoder overload and are often associated with high CPU use.
- Lagged frames: indicate compositor overload and are commonly associated with high GPU use.
- Dropped frames: point to network trouble rather than necessarily to a CPU problem.
These distinctions come from Streamlabs Support’s stream-quality troubleshooting guide, originally published February 28, 2020 and last updated April 25, 2025. Interface labels can vary by installed version, so use the equivalent encoder and output controls if your screen differs.

Reduce the CPU work done by the encoder
If you are using x264
x264 is software encoding: it uses the CPU to encode the stream. Streamlabs says faster x264 presets use less CPU, so try a faster preset and compare CPU use and stream quality. The trade-off is that reducing the encoder’s workload may affect the resulting image quality. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
Try a compatible hardware encoder
Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated encoder in a compatible GPU. Streamlabs recommends NVENC for NVIDIA GPUs. If your system offers a suitable hardware encoder, select it in Streamlabs’ output or streaming settings, then check CPU use and the frame-warning counters again. Availability depends on your hardware; the information in this article cannot establish whether your computer supports a particular encoder.

Streamlabs Support explains that x264 uses the CPU, while hardware encoders such as NVENC use a dedicated encoder in the GPU. A hardware encoder can reduce CPU encoding load, but it does not guarantee that total CPU use will fall if another program or scene source is responsible.
Lower output resolution if you are streaming at 1080p
Streamlabs recommends 1280Ă—720 as a balance between performance and quality, and warns that 1080p can have a significant CPU impact. If your output is currently 1080p, try 1280Ă—720 and compare resource use and the appearance of the stream. Treat this as a general starting point, not a guaranteed fix or a measured CPU saving. Keep the resolution that meets your needs without recreating the problem.

Test the scene and loop sources
A looping video may be only one part of the active scene. Streamlabs’ project troubleshooting notes identify sources, animated overlays, multiple browser sources, and browser-source cache as things worth checking when CPU use is high. They do not establish that any one of these is the cause on your computer.
- Temporarily disable animated overlays and other nonessential sources in the active scene.
- If the scene uses browser sources, disable nonessential ones for a comparison.
- Check CPU use after each change. Restore a source if removing it does not make a meaningful difference.
- Try Performance Mode if available. Streamlabs describes it as a modest way to reduce CPU and GPU load.
Streamlabs’ repository notes mention a Windows browser-source cache location, but that community documentation is older. Do not delete cache files based on a path you have not confirmed applies to your installed version; try the simpler scene comparisons first.

Use the warning type to choose the next step
- Skipped frames with high CPU use: prioritize testing a faster x264 preset, a compatible hardware encoder, or lower output resolution.
- Lagged frames with high GPU use: investigate compositor load and scene complexity; changing the CPU encoder alone may not address it.
- Dropped frames: investigate the network path. A CPU upgrade is not established as the remedy for this warning.
These are diagnostic directions, not proof of a specific fault. Streamlabs notes that performance depends on the content, other running programs, and computer hardware. Its system-requirements page does not determine whether an unknown computer is inadequate for this particular stream.

- Record the current encoder, output resolution and frame rate, CPU and GPU use, and Streamlabs warning counters.
- If using x264, try a faster CPU-usage preset. If your GPU supports a suitable hardware encoder, compare that option too.
- If output is 1080p, test 1280Ă—720 and compare quality and resource use.
- Temporarily simplify the active scene, testing overlays and browser sources one at a time.
- Try Performance Mode if available, then reassess the same measures.
- If the problem remains, collect the Streamlabs version, operating system, CPU and GPU models, encoder setting, source list, and warning counts before seeking targeted help.
Changing one variable at a time makes the result useful: if CPU use falls, you can identify which adjustment mattered. If it does not, you have not shown that the computer needs replacing; you have shown that the tested change did not resolve the observed load.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded documentaries looping on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a Streamlabs CPU fix. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will switching to NVENC always lower Streamlabs’ total CPU use?
Not necessarily. It can reduce CPU work from encoding, but other programs or scene sources may still be using CPU.
Does a high CPU percentage prove my computer is underpowered?
No. Streamlabs says performance depends on the content, other running programs, and hardware; the percentage alone does not establish that the system is inadequate.
