OBS Transition Settings for Rotating Videos in a Nonstop YouTube Broadcast

Set video looping or playlist rotation separately from OBS scene transitions, and test playback and audio before running a nonstop YouTube broadcast.

To rotate videos in a nonstop YouTube broadcast with OBS, set playback separately from scene transitions: use a looping Media Source for one repeating file, or a VLC Video source for a playlist. Then choose a scene transition—such as Fade or Cut—and set its duration in the Scene Transitions panel. Test playback, audio boundaries, and scene changes before leaving the broadcast running.

First decide what “rotating videos” means

OBS has two separate controls that are easy to confuse. A media source controls whether a video repeats or which playlist item plays next. A scene transition controls how OBS moves visually from one scene to another. If several videos are in one playlist, they can play in sequence without any scene transition; if you want different layouts or overlays between clips, configure scenes and transitions as well.

Repeat one video continuously

  1. Add the file: In the scene, click + in the Sources panel and add a Media Source. Select the recording you want to play.
  2. Enable repetition: Open the source properties and turn on Loop. It is off by default; enabling it makes the file replay when playback completes.
  3. Check activation behavior: Restart playback when source becomes active is on by default. It restarts the file when the source becomes active in the current scene and visible. This setting is independent of the scene-transition duration, so consider its effect if you switch away and back.

Rotate several videos from a playlist

  1. Install VLC: OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  2. Add the playlist source: In the Sources panel, click +, select VLC Video, and create or populate its playlist with the files to rotate.
  3. Choose order: Loop Playlist is on by default, so the playlist restarts after its final file. Shuffle Playlist is off by default, giving repeat-in-order playback. Leave shuffle off for a fixed sequence or enable it for randomized order.
  4. Account for visibility: The documented default visibility behavior is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If you hide the source or switch to a scene that does not show it, playback may stop and restart when it becomes visible again. Test this with your actual scene arrangement.

OBS lists the VLC playlist property as: “Loop Playlist | Specifies whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files | On”.

Choose a scene transition and duration

In the Scene Transitions panel, select the active transition from the dropdown and set its duration. OBS documents Fade and Cut as available from first launch; additional listed choices include Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe. A Cut changes immediately; a Fade blends between scenes over the configured duration. Pick what suits the visuals and preview it with the actual content—there is no universal duration.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Prepare scene changes in Studio Mode

With Studio Mode, prepare or edit the next scene in preview, then click Transition when ready to take it live. You can also add a transition to Quick Transitions and configure its duration separately. OBS’s guide gives 500 ms and 1000 ms as examples, not as required or universally recommended values.

Use a Stinger for an animated overlay

A Stinger is a video overlay designed to cover the cut between scenes. Configure its cut point in milliseconds or frames. In Track Matte mode, an animated mask controls the reveal: black corresponds to the current scene, white to the next, and intermediate gray values permit blends. OBS describes combined-file layouts with the videos side by side or vertically stacked. For Track Matte, its guide recommends a single combined file: separate files are disabled because their video streams cannot be guaranteed to decode in perfect sync.

Pick the setup that fits the broadcast

Setup Best fit Important behavior or check
Media Source with Loop One file repeating Loop is off by default. Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate option and on by default.
VLC Video playlist Several files rotating Playlist loop is on and shuffle is off by default. VLC is required; check playlist order and visibility behavior.
Fade or Cut Simple scene changes Select the transition and duration, then preview with the actual content.
Studio Mode or Quick Transition Preparing the next scene before taking it live Preview and edit the next scene, then transition; a Quick Transition can have its own duration.
Stinger with Track Matte Branded or animated scene changes Use a combined file for the matte workflow to avoid uncertainty about synchronization between separate video files.

Test the full rotation before leaving OBS live

Run through the entire sequence in the scene configuration you intend to broadcast. Check that files play in the desired order, the loop restarts, hiding or showing a source behaves as expected, and audio at the end and start of clips is acceptable. Preview each scene transition and watch an extended test for stream stability. OBS recommends testing settings, stream smoothness, and scene configuration before the first live stream.

Separate OBS configuration from YouTube policy

These OBS controls determine local playback and how scene changes look; they do not establish YouTube’s current rules or eligibility for a nonstop broadcast. Check current YouTube Live guidance for applicable requirements, copyright, and reused-content questions. The OBS documentation cited here does not settle YouTube-specific limits on broadcast duration, continuity, or policy eligibility.
