Neither a spare PC nor a VPS is automatically the better 24/7 YouTube host. A spare PC uses hardware, power and internet you already have; a VPS moves OBS to a remote instance whose encoding capability and network capacity depend on its exact configuration. Test the complete stream workload before committing to either, and plan how you will detect and recover from interruptions.
Choose based on the whole streaming workload
Start with the stream you intend to run—not with the words “spare PC” or “VPS.” List the input sources, OBS scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, codec and target bitrate. OBS says CPU demand varies with the encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity; it also cautions that a compatible computer is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording. - A spare PC may fit if its CPU or hardware encoder can sustain the actual OBS workload and your home connection can continuously upload the stream.
- A VPS may fit if the specific instance provides a suitable CPU or accessible graphics/encoder capability, enough sustained outbound network capacity, and workable remote administration.
- Either can fail. The sources do not establish an uptime winner, a universal suitable VPS type, or a comparative cost. Reliability depends on the full operating setup, not just where OBS runs.
There is no head-to-head published uptime comparison in the cited material. A short successful test is useful evidence about performance under those test conditions, but it does not prove long-term unattended reliability.

A VPS is not one standardized machine. For example, AWS says EC2 network capacity varies by instance type, and offers GPU instances for graphics workloads; that documentation illustrates configuration differences, not a recommendation for a particular instance or provider. Set YouTube’s ingest settings for the stream you need
The ingest requirements apply whether OBS runs at home or on a VPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion and publishes encoder settings, bitrate recommendations and keyframe guidance in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (accessed October 3, 2026; no publication year shown on the page). These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a test of your hardware or connection.

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Select the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate that match the stream you actually plan to send; the table does not establish that a given PC, VPS or internet connection can sustain those settings.

Test a spare PC before relying on it
- Build the real OBS workload. Use the sources, scenes, audio and motion expected in the ongoing stream, then set the planned output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval. A simple static scene may perform differently from a complex scene.
- Check the home upload path. Test upload performance and stability at the planned bitrate, preferably with the PC connected by Ethernet. AWS IVS recommends wired networking and allocating 50% more bandwidth than the minimum required; that is IVS guidance, not a YouTube rule or a guarantee against outages. - Send a representative test to YouTube. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include audio and movement similar to the real broadcast, then monitor stream health and any messages in YouTube’s live tools.
- Observe OBS while it streams. Look for rendering or encoding problems, dropped frames and audio issues during a sustained run. Repeat with the real scene complexity and intended settings; a brief test cannot establish continuous long-term reliability.
- Plan recovery and access. Decide how you will notice a stopped or degraded stream, regain access to the PC, and restart the workflow. Consider what happens after a power cut, router or ISP interruption, system update, or OBS failure.
A wired connection can reduce reliance on Wi-Fi, but it cannot prevent a home power or ISP outage. For a home-hosted setup, an Ethernet cable is a practical option if the PC currently depends on Wi-Fi; wired networking is general live-stream guidance, not a YouTube requirement.
Evaluate a VPS by its exact configuration
- Specify the OBS job first. Record resolution, FPS, codec, bitrate, scene complexity, audio needs and any capture or media inputs. Without this, “a VPS that can run OBS” is not a meaningful capacity specification.
- Confirm operating system and encoder access. Check that your chosen operating system supports the OBS workflow and that the instance exposes the CPU or graphics encoder you intend to use. GPU availability is configuration-specific; AWS describes GPU instances for graphics workloads but does not identify a universally suitable OBS instance.
- Check sustained outbound networking. Review the exact instance’s network allowance, region and any burst-credit behavior. Do not treat an “up to” rate as proof of continuous available throughput.
- Test OBS and YouTube together. Install and configure the real scenes and output, publish a representative test, and inspect OBS performance and YouTube stream health. Confirm that audio, media, credentials and remote controls work in the selected environment.
- Document operations before leaving it unattended. Establish remote access, restart steps, update policy, monitoring, provider support and recovery expectations. Verify provider terms directly; the cited sources do not establish service commitments or automatic recovery for a generic VPS.
Do not choose a GPU instance merely because the word “streaming” appears in the use case. First determine whether the workload needs GPU encoding or graphics capability, then verify that the specific instance exposes what OBS needs.

Make the decision with a realistic trial
- Lean toward the spare PC when you already own suitable hardware, can keep it powered and reachable, and it passes an extended test on the home connection.
- Lean toward a VPS when moving the encoder off-site or administering it remotely is important, and you have verified the selected instance’s encoder and sustained network capacity.
- Do not decide on reliability by category. Compare your actual home power, ISP and recovery plan against the specific cloud provider’s service terms, remote access and restart process. The reviewed documentation does not establish that VPS hosting is inherently more reliable.
- Do not decide on headline cost. Add electricity and upgrades for the PC, or the full cloud configuration and operating schedule for the VPS. No sourced like-for-like price comparison is available.
