Hints for Connections #844
In Connections, you sort 16 words into four groups of four. Each group has a common link. The categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally the most accessible, followed by green, blue, and purple.
- Yellow hint: Things you might say to a dog during training.
- Green hint: Words that can mean deserved, proper, or equitable.
- Blue hint: Words associated with being put or located somewhere.
- Purple hint: Films that won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The board contains several short, flexible words, so do not immediately group every apparent direction together. In particular, UP, DOWN, LEFT, and RIGHT look like an obvious set—but they are deliberately split among different categories.

NYT Connections answers for October 2, 2025
The four groups in game #844 were:
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Dog commands | COME, DOWN, HEEL, STAY |
| Green | Deserved | DUE, FAIR, JUST, RIGHT |
| Blue | Situated | LEFT, PLACED, PUT, SET |
| Purple | Best Animated Feature Oscar winners | BRAVE, FLOW, FROZEN, UP |
Yellow: Dog commands — COME, DOWN, HEEL, STAY
COME, DOWN, HEEL, and STAY are familiar commands used in dog training and handling. The group becomes easier once you notice that DOWN is serving as a command rather than as a direction.
These words also help expose the puzzle’s main trap. DOWN appears to belong with the directional-looking words UP, LEFT, and RIGHT, but its intended connection here is to dog obedience.
Green: Deserved — DUE, FAIR, JUST, RIGHT
DUE, FAIR, JUST, and RIGHT can all describe something deserved, proper, or justified. For example, a person may receive what is due, be treated fairly, or be considered right or just in a particular context.
DUE is the potential sticking point: it may first suggest a deadline or payment date. RIGHT is another decoy because it can look like one half of the familiar left/right pair.
Rank #2
Blue: Situated — LEFT, PLACED, PUT, SET
LEFT, PLACED, PUT, and SET can describe something being located or positioned—that is, situated somewhere. PLACED is the most direct member of the group, while PUT and SET work as verbs for positioning something.
LEFT is the deceptive tile. It strongly suggests a direction, but it can also mean that something was left or positioned in a particular place. In this puzzle, it belongs with the placement-related words rather than with RIGHT.
Purple: Best Animated Feature Oscar winners — BRAVE, FLOW, FROZEN, UP
BRAVE, FLOW, FROZEN, and UP are films that won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. This is the most knowledge-dependent group and is likely to be the final category many players identify.
UP is the last major red herring. It looks like the natural partner of DOWN, but here it is the title of an award-winning animated film. Once the other three groups are removed, the film-title connection resolves the remaining four tiles.

Why the directional words are a trap
The puzzle distributes four words that appear to form a straightforward directional group:
- UP → Best Animated Feature Oscar winners
- DOWN → Dog commands
- LEFT → Situated
- RIGHT → Deserved
This is exactly the kind of ambiguity that makes Connections difficult. A word can fit a plausible surface pattern without belonging to the puzzle’s intended category. When four words seem to match too neatly—especially common, short words—check whether one of them has a more specific connection elsewhere.
A practical solving path
- Look for the most concrete group. COME, HEEL, and STAY strongly suggest dog commands. DOWN completes that set.
- Test synonym relationships. DUE, FAIR, JUST, and RIGHT can all connect to the idea of something deserved or proper.
- Use the remaining placement words. LEFT, PLACED, PUT, and SET describe something being located or positioned.
- Check the final four against a cultural category. BRAVE, FLOW, FROZEN, and UP are animated-film titles associated with the Best Animated Feature Oscar.
This is a useful solving route, not a required order. The game permits multiple attempts, and a seemingly convincing group can still be wrong if one tile has a more precise intended connection.

The October 2 board was built around words with multiple ordinary meanings. DOWN can be a direction or a dog command; RIGHT can be a direction or a synonym for proper; LEFT can be a direction or a placement-related word; and UP can be a direction or a movie title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

That makes the puzzle less about recognizing four isolated groups and more about resisting the first plausible grouping. A good general tactic is to ask whether a word is being used as a noun, verb, adjective, title, or command. Changing the part of speech often reveals why an apparent match is a decoy.
