Netflix is the better default for a focused streaming service and a strong slate of original series; Prime Video is better value if you already pay for Amazon Prime, want selected live sports, or use its rental and purchase store. For documentary viewers, the right choice depends less on a headline catalog count than on the specific films and series you want: both libraries change, and Prime Video listings can require an extra payment. Prices and plan features below are for the United States, checked August 18, 2026.

“Amazon Video” usually means Prime Video. The comparison is not perfectly like-for-like: Netflix is mainly a subscription streaming service, while Prime Video combines an included library with a digital store, channel hub, and selected live events. A title appearing in Prime Video search does not necessarily mean it is included.

Amazon’s April 2026 announcement says Ultra requires a Prime or Prime Video subscription. Prime Video Ultra is an add-on, not the whole cost of a Prime membership. Prime monthly plus Ultra is $19.98 per month before tax. Prime annual plus annual Ultra is $184.99 per year, or about $15.42 per month on average. The standalone price is reported by secondary coverage, so confirm availability, features, and final cost at checkout. Amazon’s Prime Video Ultra announcement has the current feature details.

These prices are not equivalent measures of value. Netflix’s $8.99 plan is a standalone entertainment subscription; Amazon Prime’s $14.99 monthly price includes broader benefits, not just video. Taxes, bundles, and third-party billing can change the final price or available plans. Prime Video Channels are additional paid subscriptions. Check the total at signup rather than relying on an old comparison.
Which service is better for documentaries and other content?
There is no durable winner by raw catalog size. Libraries differ by country and change as rights expire or new titles arrive. Counts can also be misleading if they include Prime Video rentals, purchases, and add-on channels alongside subscription-included programs.
- Netflix: A stronger identity as a dedicated original-content service, with documentaries alongside scripted series, stand-up, reality, international productions, children’s programs, and films. Its relatively focused subscription library makes it easier to browse without checking a price on every listing.
- Prime Video: A changing movie selection, Amazon MGM originals such as Fallout, Reacher, The Boys, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, plus rentals, purchases, paid channels, and selected live sports. Its breadth is useful if you want a storefront as well as a subscription.
For documentary fans, compare the specific films and series you plan to watch rather than assuming one service has the stronger documentary library. Search the service before subscribing, check whether the title is included, and verify availability in your country. Amazon explains the difference between included titles, rentals and purchases, and add-on subscriptions; its included selection also changes over time.

Prime Video is the clearer choice for the listed live sports, which include selected NFL, NBA, WNBA, NASCAR, NWSL, and The Masters events. Availability depends on the event, market, and season. It should not be treated as a replacement for a full sports package.
Ads and ease of use
Netflix Standard with Ads has commercial breaks and may have title restrictions. Netflix Standard and Premium do not carry ordinary commercial breaks. On Prime Video, standard Prime Video content includes ads; Ultra is designed to remove ads from eligible content, but live TV, live sports, events, and some other content may still contain them. Neither an ad-supported Netflix subscription nor Ultra should be described as a guarantee that every title is available or every event is ad-free.
Netflix is generally simpler if you want to open an app and choose something covered by your subscription. Prime Video puts included titles near rentals, purchases, paid channel content, and live programming. Check a title’s label and price before pressing play or confirming a transaction. 4K, sound, streams, and downloads
Netflix Premium includes 4K UHD and HDR, while its two Standard plans top out at 1080p Full HD. Amazon says the Prime Video benefit includes HD, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision on supported titles; Ultra adds 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos where available. This is a change from older comparisons that said Prime Video included 4K without an extra charge: Amazon now places 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos in Ultra.
Plan support does not guarantee that a particular film or series will stream in 4K or use a particular HDR or audio format. The title, device, app, display, and internet connection all matter. Netflix lists simultaneous streams and download devices; Amazon gives a total download allowance, with title-, device-, and provider-level limits possible. The download figures therefore are not directly equivalent. Downloads are temporary offline access, not ownership, and can expire or become unavailable.

Families, household rules, and sharing
Netflix accounts are intended for people who live in one household. Eligible Standard accounts can add one extra member and Premium accounts up to two, at listed rates of $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 without ads. Prices and billing arrangements may vary, and extra members cannot be added to ad-supported plans. Netflix also offers kids profiles and maturity controls. Read its household and extra-member rules before planning to share across homes.

Amazon’s household benefits may suit a family already using its shopping ecosystem, and the listed stream limits are higher. But household benefits are not permission to share freely with friends in separate homes; check Amazon’s current rules for the specific benefits and account setup. Factor in the chance of extra charges: channels, rentals, and purchases are separate from the included subscription.

- You want one focused subscription and prefer not to sort included programs from paid listings.
- Original series and a broad mix of documentary, international, reality, and scripted programming matter more than live sports.
- You want ad-free Full HD without paying for 4K: Netflix Standard is $19.99 per month.
- You want 4K UHD and HDR through a dedicated streaming plan and are comfortable with Premium’s $26.99 monthly price.
- You would rather pay for a predictable subscription library than use a rental storefront.
If considering Standard with Ads, check device support first. In the Netflix app, open the menu, select Get Help, then Plan Compatibility. If the option is missing, the device may not support the ad plan. Netflix’s guidance also says casting or mirroring from a mobile device is not supported for this experience. Who should choose Prime Video?
- You already pay for Amazon Prime and will use its non-video benefits, making the included video library useful added value.
- You want selected live sports as well as on-demand programs.
- You often rent or buy individual films, or want paid add-on channels in the same app.
- You need the higher listed stream or download allowance.
- You want 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos through Ultra and accept that it costs extra and applies only when the content and equipment support it.
Should you subscribe to both?
Keeping both makes sense when each does a distinct job—for example, Netflix for series and documentaries you follow, Prime Video for selected sports, movies, or as an extra benefit of Prime you already value. If that is not true every month, rotate subscriptions: keep the service with something you want to watch, then cancel or pause the other where your billing arrangement allows. If a subscription is billed through a bundle or another provider, cancellation may need to go through that provider. Netflix says ordinary cancellation generally leaves access through the current billing period; see its cancellation guidance. Review Prime and channel billing in your Amazon account before changing them.

When neither is the best fit
Neither service is necessarily worth keeping if you are subscribing for only one show, rarely watch either library, or want to minimize recurring costs. If you mainly want a specific genre, look at services built around it: Max for HBO and prestige television, Disney+ with Hulu for franchise and family programming, Apple TV for a smaller slate of originals, Paramount+ for CBS and Paramount content, or Peacock for NBC, Bravo, and selected sports. Check each provider’s current U.S. price and catalog before switching; those details change too.
Both services’ libraries and plan availability vary by region. Netflix notes that moving countries can affect pricing and catalog access, while audio, subtitles, ratings, and downloads may also vary.
