Netflix is the best default standalone streaming service; Hulu is better for current television and live channels; Prime Video offers the strongest broader-membership value for existing Amazon Prime members. The services are not interchangeable: Netflix and standalone Prime Video are mainly on-demand libraries, while Hulu also sells a cable-replacement package. Prices and features below are U.S. figures checked August 18, 2026, and can change.
Quick verdict
| Best for | Choose | Why | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| One general-purpose on-demand app | Netflix | Broad general-interest programming, frequent originals and a simple discovery experience | No traditional live-TV replacement |
| Current-season television | Hulu | Next-day episodes, FX programming, full seasons and Hulu Originals | Ad-supported viewing and rotating availability on many plans |
| Cable replacement | Hulu + Live TV | 100+ live channels, sports, news, local stations and unlimited DVR | Higher price, regional variation, blackouts and live ads |
| Amazon ecosystem value | Prime Video | Included titles plus rentals, purchases, add-on channels, sports and Prime shopping benefits | The $4.99 Ultra price is only an add-on; the interface mixes included and paid titles |
There is no objective winner. The right choice depends on whether “best” means originals, current TV, live sports, picture quality, family use, offline viewing or total household value.
U.S. pricing and what each price buys
| Service or plan | Monthly price | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix Standard with ads | $8.99 | Entry plan with advertising; confirm current stream and download limits before subscribing |
| Netflix Standard | $19.99 | 1080p, two simultaneous devices and downloads on two supported devices |
| Netflix Premium | $26.99 | 4K/HDR, four simultaneous devices, downloads on six supported devices and spatial audio |
| Prime Video Ultra | $4.99 add-on | Requires a separate Prime membership; adds ad-free viewing subject to exceptions, up to five concurrent streams, up to 100 downloads and exclusive 4K/UHD access |
| Hulu with ads | $11.99 | Standalone on-demand plan |
| Hulu + Live TV | $89.99 | 100+ live channels, Disney+ with ads, ESPN access and unlimited DVR; lineup and availability vary by location |
Netflix prices and features are listed by Netflix at its plan information page. Hulu lists standalone and live-TV pricing at its subscription page and its Live TV page. Amazon describes Ultra at its announcement. Taxes, third-party billing, bundles, introductory offers and future price changes can alter the amount charged.
Do not compare Hulu + Live TV with basic Netflix or Prime Video as though they were the same product. Live TV is priced as a cable alternative. Likewise, Prime Video Ultra’s $4.99 is the marginal cost for someone who already wants Prime, not the complete cost for a video-only customer.

Netflix: best all-around on-demand choice
Netflix is the strongest default when one household wants a broad, easy-to-navigate on-demand service. Its strengths are a large general-interest mix, frequent original series and films, international programming, children’s content and consistent recommendations. Catalog size changes by country, licensing and counting method, so a precise “largest library” claim is not useful.
Plans, picture quality and household use
Premium is the Netflix tier for 4K Ultra HD, HDR, four simultaneous devices, six supported download devices and spatial audio. Standard provides 1080p, two simultaneous devices and two supported download devices. 4K or HDR still depends on the title, television, device, account settings and bandwidth; the highest tier does not upgrade every program.
Profiles, simultaneous streams and Netflix’s household or extra-member rules are separate issues. Check the account’s current extra-member eligibility before assuming another household can be added.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Where Netflix is weaker
- It is not a conventional live-news, local-channel or full sports replacement.
- New theatrical films are generally not included immediately.
- Premium costs more if a household only needs 1080p or one viewer.
Prime Video: best when Prime benefits matter
Prime Video combines included-with-Prime titles with rentals, purchases, third-party channel subscriptions, live events and sports. Amazon’s included collection and movie storefront illustrate the distinction. A search result is not proof that a title is included: look for the included badge or the rental, purchase or add-on price.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ultra and total cost
Ultra costs $4.99 per month above Prime membership. It offers ad-free viewing with exceptions, up to five concurrent streams, up to 100 downloads and 4K/UHD access, with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos where the title, device and bandwidth support them. Live television, sports, events and some selected content may still contain ads. The effective cost is therefore Prime membership plus Ultra for a new customer, but only $4.99 marginally for an existing Prime member.
Why Prime can be the best value
Prime makes sense when delivery, shopping benefits and other Prime features have independent value, or when one storefront for subscriptions, rentals and purchases is convenient. It is a poor fit for viewers who want every search result included without marketplace labels or who want only a simple video subscription.

Hulu: best for current TV and live television
Hulu is the most useful of the three for viewers following broadcast and cable schedules. Its on-demand service emphasizes current-season and next-day episodes, FX programming, Hulu Originals, reality, comedy and drama.
Hulu + Live TV is a different category
Hulu + Live TV advertises 100+ channels, Disney+ with ads, ESPN access and unlimited DVR. It can provide local stations, live news and sports, but channel lineups depend on ZIP code. Regional restrictions, blackouts, location requirements, device limits and live advertising apply; verify the lineup before replacing cable.

Ads, downloads and 4K
Hulu’s library can be ad-free on an eligible premium plan, but live channels and some live-plan content still carry ads. Hulu offers downloads for selected titles on supported mobile devices and eligible plans, not the entire catalog. Do not assume uniform 4K across Hulu: verify the specific title, plan and device at playback.

Ads and the real ad-free question
- Netflix’s $8.99 entry plan includes ads; Standard and Premium are the relevant options for viewers seeking an ad-free library.
- Prime Video Ultra is described as ad-free, but Amazon lists exceptions for live TV, events, sports and certain selected content.
- Hulu’s on-demand library may be ad-free on a qualifying plan, while Hulu + Live TV remains a live service with commercials.
“Ad-free” does not mean that sports, live broadcasts, promotional material or every piece of content is commercial-free. Read the exact plan terms before paying extra.
4K, HDR, audio and downloads
| Feature | Netflix | Prime Video | Hulu |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4K/HDR | Premium; title, device and bandwidth required | Ultra; title, device and bandwidth required, with Dolby Vision/Atmos where available | Verify title, plan and device; no uniform catalog-wide assumption |
| Offline downloads | Standard: two supported devices; Premium: six; title and expiration limits apply | Ultra: up to 100; title, device and provider restrictions apply | Selected titles on supported mobile devices and plans |
| Travel caveats | Downloads can expire or disappear when licensing changes | Downloads have title, device and provider limits | Mobile-only eligibility and title restrictions can apply |
Downloads are generally for supported mobile apps rather than television platforms. They consume storage, can expire and may not work the same way when traveling internationally. Check the title before a flight rather than assuming an entire service is downloadable.

Netflix vs. Prime Video
Choose Netflix for a cleaner subscription-only experience and broad recommendations. Choose Prime Video when rentals, purchases, add-ons, live sports or Prime delivery benefits are part of the value calculation. Compare Netflix’s full plan price with Prime membership plus Ultra, not with the $4.99 add-on alone.

Netflix vs. Hulu
Netflix is generally better for originals, international series, family viewing and on-demand discovery. Hulu is better when the household follows current network or FX shows, wants next-day episodes or needs live television.
Prime Video vs. Hulu
Prime Video is a marketplace and membership bundle; Hulu is the stronger current-TV service and Hulu + Live TV is the stronger cable substitute. Prime can win for a Prime household, while Hulu wins for scheduled television, local channels, news and broad live sports access.
Category winners by viewing habit
| Viewer need | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Best original-programming default | Netflix | Frequent exclusive series and films across genres |
| Best current network and FX episodes | Hulu | Next-day and current-season television focus |
| Best live sports and news package | Hulu + Live TV | Broad live-channel offering, subject to market and blackout rules |
| Best rental and add-on storefront | Prime Video | Included titles, rentals, purchases and channel subscriptions in one interface |
| Best high-end 4K choice | Netflix Premium or Prime Video Ultra | Both require premium pricing; choose based on total cost, catalog and compatible hardware |
| Best for travel downloads | Netflix or Prime Video | Both offer substantial download allowances, with title and device restrictions |
| Lowest verified entry price | Netflix with ads | $8.99 monthly, provided the viewer accepts advertising and plan limits |
Should you subscribe to all three?
Usually not year-round. A rotation strategy can reduce cost: keep Prime when its delivery benefits are worthwhile, activate Netflix when priority shows return, and use Hulu during the current-TV season. Subscribe to Hulu + Live TV for sports seasons or live events only if its channel lineup and DVR meet your needs. Compare the annual total, including taxes and bundles, rather than adding three monthly headline prices.
Quick Recap
How to choose in five steps
- Decide whether you need live channels. If yes, start with Hulu + Live TV and check your ZIP-code lineup.
- List the shows, sports and movie genres your household actually watches; content fit should outweigh catalog-size claims.
- Choose the lowest plan that supplies the required streams, resolution, downloads and advertising tolerance.
- For Prime Video, mark each desired title as included, rental, purchase or add-on before comparing value.
- Recheck device compatibility, 4K support, download eligibility and cancellation terms, then calculate the annual cost.
Bottom line by reader profile
- Pick Netflix for the best all-around standalone on-demand service and the simplest general recommendation.
- Pick Hulu for current-season television, FX, next-day episodes and Hulu Originals.
- Pick Hulu + Live TV for a cable-style mix of live sports, news, local channels and DVR, if your market supports the needed channels.
- Pick Prime Video when you already value Amazon Prime or want rentals, add-ons and selected live sports alongside included streaming.
