Netflix acquired Estonia-based avatar-technology company Ready Player Me on December 19, 2025, bringing its team and cross-game identity expertise into Netflix’s gaming organization. The deal could help Netflix connect players, games, and entertainment franchises through persistent avatars. It does not, however, confirm a Netflix metaverse, a shared 3D world, or an imminent avatar feature for subscribers.
There is also an important practical distinction: Ready Player Me’s public services became unavailable on January 31, 2026. Netflix acquired the company and its technology, but the former standalone platform should not be treated as an active consumer or developer service.
What Netflix acquired
Ready Player Me built technology for creating interoperable digital avatars. Historically, its tools allowed developers to add avatar creation and identity features to games and applications, with support described across web environments and major game-development platforms such as Unity and Unreal Engine. Those details describe the company’s former product direction; they do not mean its hosted services remain available today.

He described the relevant technology as a way for players to carry avatars, identities, and fandom across games. That makes the personnel and technical expertise—not a publicly announced consumer product—the clearest explanation of what Netflix is acquiring.

Netflix and Ready Player Me have not publicly disclosed the purchase price. The available announcement also does not establish whether the transaction was structured as a stock purchase, an asset purchase, or another form of deal. The number of employees joining Netflix and the precise intellectual-property scope remain undisclosed.
Tõke’s announcement and contemporaneous reporting from TechCrunch identify December 19, 2025, as the announcement date.
Why avatar technology matters to Netflix Games
An avatar can provide more than a visual accessory. In a portfolio of games, a persistent identity could give players a recognizable presence from one title to another. It might also make Netflix’s games feel more connected without requiring every game to share the same genre, mechanics, or setting.
- Identity across games: Players could eventually use a consistent character or profile across compatible Netflix experiences.
- More social play: Avatars may be useful in party and multiplayer games, particularly when people are playing together on a television.
- Franchise connection: Netflix could potentially offer costumes, characters, or customization inspired by its shows and films, subject to licensing and product decisions.
- Lower-friction discovery: A shared identity layer could connect game discovery, profiles, and play more naturally.
- Longer engagement: A player who develops an identity in one game may have more reason to explore another.
These are strategic possibilities, not announced Netflix features. The confirmed point is narrower: Ready Player Me brought cross-game avatar technology and expertise that Tõke said would support Netflix’s gaming strategy.

How the acquisition fits Netflix’s wider gaming push
The deal makes more sense alongside Netflix’s broader move beyond mobile game downloads. In its first-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, Netflix described four areas of gaming focus:
- Narrative games
- Party and puzzle games
- Mainstream games
- Children’s games
Netflix also said it had launched Netflix Playground, a standalone gaming app for children. The company reported that approximately 10% of kids’ profiles had played Netflix games, while nearly half of kids’ profiles viewed content on mobile devices or tablets. Netflix said Netflix Playground launched in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, with a global launch scheduled for April 28, 2026.
Netflix has separately pointed to promising traction from cloud gaming and continued work to make games playable on TV-connected devices. Its Q1 2026 earnings-call material described gaming as being in its fifth year and highlighted potential expansion in game discovery and ease of play.

That context is important. A shared identity system could eventually be useful in mobile games, cloud games, TV games, or children’s experiences—but Netflix has not said where it will deploy Ready Player Me’s technology. The acquisition should therefore be read as infrastructure for a broader gaming strategy, not as proof of one specific product.

What a future Netflix avatar experience could look like
Netflix has not announced a user-facing avatar product or launch schedule. Several applications are technically plausible, but they should be treated as scenarios rather than promises:
- A Netflix profile could have an optional avatar that appears across compatible games.
- Cosmetic items could travel between selected Netflix titles.
- Players might customize characters with designs connected to Netflix franchises.
- Avatars could identify participants in TV-based party games while phones act as controllers.
- A shared identity could sit behind a future social or multiplayer layer.
“Cross-game” also does not necessarily mean interoperability with every outside game. Netflix could limit the system to its own catalog, use the technology only in selected first-party titles, or deploy it behind the scenes for character customization and account identity. It could even retain the technology while retiring the Ready Player Me brand.
Ready Player Me’s public platform has ended
For developers and former users, the most immediate consequence is the shutdown of the old service. In its service-discontinuation announcement, Ready Player Me said its services would become unavailable on January 31, 2026.

- The acquisition: Netflix acquired Ready Player Me and brought its team into Netflix’s gaming effort.
- The public platform: The former Ready Player Me services are no longer available from January 31, 2026.
- Future internal use: Netflix may use the acquired technology in its own products, but has not detailed how.
Developers should not assume that old Ready Player Me APIs, SDKs, hosted avatar creation, integrations, or support arrangements continue after the shutdown. Migration, data export, licensing, compatibility, and support details require separate confirmation; the acquisition itself is not a guarantee that historical integrations will be preserved.
Does this mean Netflix is building a metaverse?
No such conclusion is supported by the available evidence. The acquisition points to avatars and cross-game identity. It does not establish a persistent 3D Netflix world, a virtual-reality platform, user-owned digital assets, blockchain or NFT plans, a public avatar editor inside the Netflix app, or a confirmed social network.
“Metaverse” may be used as an analytical shorthand for a connected digital experience, but it should not be presented as Netflix’s announced product direction. Netflix’s own gaming communications emphasize a varied portfolio—narrative, party, puzzle, mainstream, and children’s games—alongside cloud and TV play, rather than a single virtual world.

Why it could help Netflix
A reusable identity layer could make a collection of separate games feel more like an ecosystem. It could support party games on television, encourage discovery across the catalog, and give Netflix a digital way to connect entertainment fandom with gameplay. It may also give Netflix access to specialized avatar expertise instead of building every part of that system from scratch.
Best Value
- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
Why it may not translate into a successful product
Avatar systems can create friction. If players must customize a character before they can start a game, the feature could conflict with Netflix’s interest in easy discovery and low-friction play. Many players may also see avatars as unnecessary unless they provide meaningful social or gameplay value.
Interoperability is technically difficult. Different games use different body proportions, animation rigs, camera perspectives, clothing systems, performance targets, and age ratings. A character that works in one game cannot automatically be transferred cleanly into another. Every participating game must support the relevant avatar data and decide how accessories, animations, and customization are handled.
Netflix would also face intellectual-property complications. Rights for a character or costume may vary by game, platform, territory, or licensing agreement. A design cleared for one Netflix title would not automatically be cleared for a third-party game.
Children’s games introduce additional safety and privacy questions. Netflix would need clear controls around profiles, parental consent, interaction features, user-generated content, data retention, deletion, and any use of facial images if avatar creation ever involves selfies. The company has not published final safeguards for a Netflix avatar system because it has not announced such a product.
What Netflix has not announced
The following details remain unknown:
- The acquisition price.
- The legal structure and closing mechanics of the transaction.
- The number of Ready Player Me employees joining Netflix.
- Whether Netflix acquired all of the company’s intellectual property, selected assets, or a particular business unit.
- Whether avatars will appear in mobile, TV, cloud, or children’s games.
- Whether avatars will be optional, cosmetic, social, or required.
- Whether users can import historical Ready Player Me avatars.
- Whether avatars will be tied to Netflix profiles, individual games, or both.
- Whether Netflix will license the technology to outside developers.
- Whether the technology will work across third-party games.
- Whether Netflix will preserve compatibility with older Ready Player Me integrations.
- When, if ever, a consumer avatar feature will launch.
Why the deal matters now
Netflix’s gaming ambitions increasingly involve more than offering isolated mobile titles. The company is testing ways to improve discovery, expand play across devices, reach children and families, and bring games to televisions and cloud platforms. In that environment, Ready Player Me’s technology could become a connective layer between experiences.
But the value of the acquisition will depend on execution. A useful avatar system would need to be optional or quick enough not to slow down play, consistent enough to work across very different games, safe for younger users, and distinctive enough to make Netflix’s entertainment catalog feel meaningfully connected to its games.
