Devices such as Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer and many smart TVs with their own Netflix app are generally no longer available in Netflix’s Cast list. Netflix still lists a small group of older or specialized targets, including Chromecast (3rd generation or older), Google Nest Hub displays and select Vizio and Compal TVs. On excluded devices, open Netflix on the television or streaming player and use its remote.
The change was first widely reported on December 1, 2025, after users noticed the Cast button disappearing. Netflix’s current help pages, checked August 18, 2026, define the supported-device list.
What Netflix changed
Netflix has not removed its television apps. Compatible smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, phones, tablets and computers can still run Netflix directly; see the company’s supported-devices list.
What changed is the ability to use the Netflix mobile app as the controller for playback on most receiving TVs and streaming boxes. On an excluded device, the normal process is now:
#1 Best Overall
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Open the native Netflix app on the TV or streaming player.
- Sign in on that device if required.
- Browse and control playback with the supplied remote.
Netflix’s casting help page says devices outside its compatibility list must be controlled with the TV or streaming-device remote.
Which devices still accept Netflix mobile casting?
Netflix’s current documentation lists these targets. Casting also requires a Standard or Premium plan.
| Receiving device | Mobile Netflix casting |
|---|---|
| Chromecast 3rd generation or older, without a physical remote | Yes, subject to plan and network requirements |
| Google Nest Hub smart display | Yes, subject to plan and network requirements |
| Select cast-enabled Vizio TVs | Yes, subject to plan and network requirements |
| Select cast-enabled Compal TVs | Yes, subject to plan and network requirements |
| Chromecast with Google TV | Generally unavailable |
| Google TV Streamer | Generally unavailable |
| Most modern smart TVs with their own Netflix app and remote | Generally unavailable |
| iPhone or iPad through AirPlay | No |
Check Netflix’s casting page and “No devices found” guidance for the current list before assuming a particular model qualifies. A television’s general Google Cast capability does not guarantee that Netflix will authorize it as a Netflix destination.

Why the Cast icon disappeared
On a modern Google TV device or a smart TV with its own Netflix app, a missing Cast icon is usually the intended result of Netflix’s policy—not a failed Chromecast or phone. Netflix’s cast-icon troubleshooting page says the icon can also disappear because of compatibility, permissions or network problems, so check compatibility first.

It is also separate from AirPlay: Netflix does not support AirPlay from iPhone or iPad, a restriction that predates the 2025 Google Cast change.
Plan rules: Standard or Premium only
Netflix says casting or mirroring is available on Standard or Premium plans. The ad-supported plan is not a supported solution for mobile casting, even when the receiving hardware appears on the compatibility list. Netflix’s live U.S. plan page is here; a page checked August 18, 2026 displayed $8.99 per month for Standard with ads, while older Netflix pages showed different cached figures. - Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Upgrading does not make Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer or another excluded modern TV reappear in the Cast list. The plan tier matters only when both the hardware and Netflix’s device policy already permit casting.
What to use instead
Use the native Netflix app and remote
This is the most reliable and least expensive option if the TV or streaming player already supports Netflix. It avoids phone-battery drain and wireless discovery issues and normally gives the best integration with profiles, subtitles, audio systems and picture settings. The trade-off is signing in on a television and navigating with a remote, which is less convenient than browsing on a phone and can be awkward on a hotel set.
Try Android screen mirroring
Android phones may offer a control named Screen Cast, Smart View, Smart Share or Wireless Display, depending on the manufacturer. Netflix documents mirroring as a possible option but warns that some phones, TVs and third-party mirroring apps are unsupported. Expect possible latency, black bars, lower resolution or an unstable connection; treat it as a test, not a guaranteed Netflix replacement.

- Watch the entertainment you love with Chromecast with Google TV, including live TV in up to 4K HDR; discover over 700,000 movies and TV episodes, plus millions of songs
- Get fast streaming, and enjoy a crystal clear picture up to 4K and brighter colors with HDR
- Your home screen displays movies and TV shows from all your services in one place with Chromecast 4K; get personal recommendations based on your subscriptions, viewing habits, and content you own
- Press the Google Assistant button on the remote and use voice search to find specific shows, youtube tv streaming, or search by mood, genre, actress, and more; control the volume, switch inputs, play music, and get answers, hands-free
- Chromecast is easy to install and compatible with almost any TV that has an HDMI port; to get started, just plug it into your TV’s HDMI port, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming
Connect by cable
A wired connection avoids wireless discovery and can help with travel or a display that lacks a Netflix app.
- Lightning iPhones and iPads need a supported Lightning Digital AV Adapter. Netflix identifies model numbers A1438 and A1621.
- USB-C iPhones, iPads and compatible Android devices need a video-capable USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or USB-C/Thunderbolt connection.
- Netflix says compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt cables must support high-resolution video, identifying USB 3.1 or later.
- Some phones do not support wired video output at all.
Charge-only USB-C cables and unsupported HDMI adapters can produce no picture, an error or a black screen. Netflix also notes that downloaded content may show black bars and that autoplay of the next episode is not supported while using a video cable. Apple’s adapter pages are Lightning Digital AV Adapter and USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter.

- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Netflix and enable Local Network.
- Update Netflix and, where applicable, Google Home and Google Play Services.
- Restart the phone.
- Power off the TV or Chromecast, unplug it for about 15 seconds, reconnect it and restart.
- Restart the modem and router if the target still does not appear.
Netflix’s current troubleshooting page lists Android 9 or later and iOS/iPadOS 16 or later for this casting path: check the requirements.
Hotel rooms and travel
The policy is most disruptive when you do not control the television. Phone casting previously let travelers browse and authenticate without typing a password into an unfamiliar hotel TV. Depending on the hotel’s equipment and rules, alternatives now include:
- Use the hotel TV’s Netflix app and sign in manually, then sign out completely before checkout.
- Carry an older, compatible Chromecast if you already own one.
- Use a wired phone-to-HDMI adapter where the room permits external inputs.
- Test Android mirroring if both the phone and television support a compatible method.
Hotel and business-travel impact has also been reported by Fast Company and TechRadar.
Should you buy an older Chromecast?
Netflix lists Chromecast 3rd generation or older, without a remote, as compatible. That does not make a used unit a strong long-term purchase: the hardware is discontinued, condition and firmware vary, sellers may inflate prices, and Netflix could change the policy again. Do not buy obsolete hardware solely to preserve one feature.
If you need a new streaming player, choose it for a current native Netflix app, a usable physical remote, software support, reliable Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and required 4K/HDR or Dolby Vision features—not for phone-based Netflix casting. Current platforms include Roku players, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV 4K and Google TV Streamer. The last of these supports Netflix natively but is generally excluded from mobile Netflix casting.
What Netflix has—and has not—explained
Netflix’s support pages describe the allowed devices, plan requirement, network conditions and alternatives, but they do not provide a detailed public technical or commercial reason for narrowing the feature. Explanations involving password sharing, advertising, security, maintenance costs or product strategy remain speculation unless Netflix confirms them. The verified practical fact is simpler: most modern TV interfaces must now be operated through their own Netflix app and remote.
