Netflix Doubles Down on Gaming With Ready Player Me Acquisition—but the Avatar Plan Is Still Unclear

Netflix announced its acquisition of Estonia-based avatar-technology company Ready Player Me on December 19, 2025. The purchase price was not disclosed. Netflix said it would use Ready Player Me’s tools and infrastructure to develop identities that could carry a subscriber’s persona and fandom across multiple Netflix games.

This was primarily a technology-and-talent acquisition, not the purchase of a major game publisher. Its immediate practical consequence was disruptive: Ready Player Me’s independent avatar platform and PlayerZero service were scheduled to shut down on January 31, 2026. Netflix has not publicly announced an avatar launch date, first supported games, export rules, or whether the future system will remain available to outside developers.

What Netflix actually bought

Ready Player Me built technology for creating and using a persistent avatar across different games and virtual worlds. Its developer tools, software infrastructure and identity layer were designed to let a player retain a recognizable persona rather than start from scratch in every title.

The company originated in Estonia and served thousands of developers, according to co-founder and chief executive Timmu Tõke. Netflix therefore acquired a platform and the people who built it, along with related intellectual property and operational know-how—not a large catalogue of games or a conventional publishing business.

Jazwares Avatar: The Last Airbender Katara (Book One) - 4.5-Inch Scale Figure with Water Whip and Battle Action
  • WATERBENDER: Master the element of water with Katara (Book One)
  • BOOK ONE: 4.5-inch scale figure is based on “Book One” of Avatar: The Last Airbender
  • ARTICULATED: Features 14 points of articulation for play and display
  • ACCESSORIES: Includes removable water pouch plus water whip effect
  • BATTLE ACTION: Performs unique battle action by pulling the left arm back

Netflix told TechCrunch that approximately 20 employees would join the company. Netflix also corrected an initial report about the founders: CTO Rainer Selvet was the founder identified as joining Netflix; the other three founders were not reported as joining.

Ready Player Me had raised $72 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Endeavor, Konvoy Ventures, Plural and prominent technology founders. That is the company’s publicly reported fundraising total, not the value of Netflix’s acquisition. The transaction terms remain undisclosed.

Tõke described the intended direction as allowing identity and fandom to travel across games. That could mean a common visual persona, but it does not automatically mean that progress, purchases, achievements or inventory would transfer between titles.

Why avatars fit Netflix’s gaming strategy

Netflix’s rationale is strategic rather than merely cosmetic. A persistent identity could make a collection of otherwise separate games feel like one ecosystem. It could also give players a social presence in party games played on a television, and eventually connect interactive experiences with Netflix films, series and licensed characters.

Netflix executives have said games can reinforce the relationship between interactive and noninteractive entertainment and may contribute to engagement and retention. Those statements describe a company-level hypothesis, not proof that avatars themselves improve retention. Netflix has not published an avatar-specific performance result.

  • Continuity: A familiar persona can give subscribers a reason to return across several games.
  • Social play: Distinct avatars can help identify players in living-room party and multiplayer experiences.
  • Fandom: A future system could connect game identities with Netflix franchises, subject to licensing and product decisions.
  • Technology leverage: Netflix receives an existing avatar stack instead of building every creation, hosting and identity component internally.

Netflix’s gaming reset: from mobile inclusion to cloud television play

The acquisition makes more sense alongside Netflix’s change in gaming emphasis.

Jazwares Avatar: The Last Airbender Aang (Book Three) - 6.5-Inch Scale Figure with Alternate Faceplate, Swappable Hands, Staff and Air Bending Effect
  • THE AVATAR: Master all four elements with Aang (Book Three)
  • BOOK THREE: 6.5-inch scale figure is based on “Book Three” of Avatar: The Last Airbender

  1. 2021: Netflix entered games primarily through mobile titles included with a subscription.
  2. 2022 onward: It acquired or established studios and expanded its portfolio ambitions.
  3. 2024–2025: Leadership changes and studio reductions indicated a reassessment of parts of that earlier approach.
  4. 2025: Netflix increasingly highlighted television games, party and puzzle experiences, children’s titles, narrative games and mainstream or recognizable properties.
  5. December 19, 2025: Netflix announced the Ready Player Me acquisition.
  6. January 20, 2026: On its earnings call, Netflix described cloud-first TV games as a major priority for 2026.
  7. January 31, 2026: Ready Player Me’s standalone services were scheduled to end.

On the January 2026 earnings call, Netflix said roughly one-third of members had access to TV-based games. That figure describes eligibility or access, not that one-third of members were actively playing. Netflix said party games had seen strong uptake among eligible members, while acknowledging that the overall effort was still early and operating from a small base.

Netflix’s Q1 2026 shareholder letter grouped its games strategy into narrative, party and puzzle, mainstream and kids’ categories. It also said about 10% of kids’ profiles had played Netflix games. The company said it would continue expanding cloud-first TV games, including experiences using phones or compatible controllers, but availability depends on title, device, account and region.

What Netflix has—and has not—announced about avatars

Confirmed Not publicly specified in the available announcements
Netflix plans to use Ready Player Me’s development technology and infrastructure. There is no announced avatar launch date.
The stated goal is to let identity and fandom travel across Netflix games. Netflix has not named the first avatar-enabled games.
The Ready Player Me team transitioned into Netflix, with approximately 20 employees reported as joining. It is unclear whether avatars will work across mobile and TV games, or only selected titles and regions.
Ready Player Me’s independent services were scheduled to wind down on January 31, 2026. Netflix has not said whether users can import, export or use avatars outside Netflix.
The acquisition is part of a broader cloud-first TV gaming push. Netflix has not detailed profile integration, children’s-profile rules, third-party developer access, branding or cosmetic monetization.

“Cross-game” should therefore be read narrowly until Netflix provides technical details. It does not necessarily mean cross-platform, cross-account, cross-company or universal support in every Netflix game.

  • MASTER PLANNER: Make a master plan with Sokka (Book One)
  • BOOK ONE: 4.5-inch scale figure is based on “Book One” of Avatar: The Last Airbender
  • ARTICULATED: Features 14 points of articulation for play and display

  • BATTLE ACTION: Performs unique battle action by twisting the torso

What the shutdown means for Ready Player Me users and developers

Existing developers had built integrations around Ready Player Me’s avatar creation tools, APIs, SDKs and hosting. The acquisition created immediate uncertainty because the independent service was not simply continuing as before under a new owner.

The platform and PlayerZero were reported as winding down on January 31, 2026. Developers should not assume that former APIs, SDKs, avatar-generation workflows or hosted assets remain available. A future Netflix service would be a new product or internal platform unless Netflix explicitly announces continuity, migration support or an external developer program.

The founder’s acquisition announcement prompted developers to ask whether they could keep using Ready Player Me in their products. Those reactions are not a formal support notice, but they show why the deal mattered beyond Netflix’s own games: businesses that depended on an established independent platform faced migration and continuity risks.

The business case and the trade-offs

Potential advantages for Netflix

  • A faster technical route: Netflix can adapt an existing avatar stack rather than develop every component from zero.
  • A connected catalogue: A shared persona could make unrelated titles feel more coherent.
  • Television multiplayer: Visible identities are useful in party games played by several people in one room.
  • Franchise extension: Netflix could eventually link avatars with shows, films and adaptations, subject to rights and age ratings.

Risks and limitations

  • Interoperability loss: Ready Player Me was built for broad developer use; narrowing it to Netflix could reduce the original platform’s value.
  • Technical fragmentation: Mobile, cloud, television and controller-based games may require different performance, account and input designs.
  • Child safety: Netflix’s children’s focus raises requirements for parental controls, moderation, personalization and restricted customization.
  • Licensing complexity: Character likenesses, branded clothing and other Netflix-linked cosmetics can involve regional rights and age-rating constraints.
  • Adoption: Subscribers may ignore avatars unless games make identity socially useful or meaningfully persistent.
  • Developer disruption: Closing the standalone service removes a known independent dependency and may force re-engineering.

What to watch next

The clearest evidence of Netflix’s plan will come from products, not acquisition language. Important milestones include:

  • the first game that actually uses Netflix’s avatar technology;
  • how avatars connect to Netflix profiles, including children’s profiles;
  • whether the same identity works on mobile, television and cloud sessions;
  • whether outside developers receive APIs or SDKs;
  • import and export rules for existing Ready Player Me assets;
  • parental controls, moderation and regional restrictions;
  • whether customization is purely cosmetic or linked to progression, rewards or paid items.

Developers evaluating alternatives can investigate services such as Avatar SDK, Genies, VRoid and the Unity ecosystem. These are options to assess, not confirmed Netflix partners or one-for-one replacements. Their export formats, licensing, privacy terms, runtime support and pricing differ.

For subscribers, Netflix’s official games guidance is available at Netflix Help. A subscription may provide access to included mobile and TV games where supported, but it does not establish access to a public Ready Player Me replacement or guarantee avatar support.

Bottom line

Netflix’s Ready Player Me acquisition is best understood as an investment in the infrastructure and talent for a more connected games ecosystem. It supports Netflix’s shift toward cloud-based television play and social, family-friendly categories, but it does not prove an open metaverse strategy or guarantee avatars in every game.

The most concrete result so far is also the most consequential for existing users: Ready Player Me’s standalone services were wound down on January 31, 2026. Until Netflix identifies a launch date, supported games, account rules and developer access, the future avatar product remains a strategic intention rather than a consumer feature.
