Netflix Audio Description Explained: How Its Narration Helps Blind and Low-Vision Viewers

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Netflix’s “narration feature” is officially called audio description (AD). Netflix launched it on April 14, 2015, beginning with Marvel’s Daredevil; it is not a new 2026 product, but an accessibility feature that has expanded across selected films and series. AD adds a separate narration track describing important visual information—actions, expressions, locations, costumes and scene changes—during natural pauses in dialogue.

It remains available today, although support depends on the title, episode, language, region and device.

What Netflix audio description does

Audio description is an optional alternate audio track for blind and low-vision viewers. A narrator explains visual details that the regular soundtrack cannot communicate, such as a character entering a room, a change in facial expression, a new location or an important on-screen action.

The narration is generally placed between lines of dialogue and other key sounds. It is selective rather than continuous: timing, music, sound effects and dialogue leave only limited space, so the script prioritizes information needed to follow the story. AD is not a spoken transcript of every object on screen.

Netflix describes the feature in its original launch announcement and current accessibility overview.

Why Daredevil was the first Netflix title

Netflix introduced audio description with the first season of Marvel’s Daredevil. The choice was thematically fitting because its central character, Matt Murdock, is blind. The launch was not intended to limit AD to that show: Netflix said it planned to add the track to other original series and selected films, including titles such as House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Marco Polo.

Netflix adopted an established accessibility practice; it did not invent audio description. Its significance was bringing the option into a large streaming catalog and making it selectable alongside other audio languages.

Is audio description still available in 2026?

Yes. Netflix continues to offer AD on selected movies and series. In a May 2026 update, the company said it added more than 13,000 hours of audio description across 34 languages during 2025, an increase of more than 30% year over year. Those are Netflix-reported aggregate additions, not the size of the entire AD catalog and not a guarantee for any particular show.

Availability can vary in several ways:

  • A series may have AD for one season or episode but not another.
  • English AD may be available while another language is not.
  • Licensing and regional catalogs can produce different options in different countries.
  • Streaming and downloaded versions may show different language choices; Netflix says downloads can display only the most relevant available languages.
  • Device apps expose the same feature through different controls and labels.

Netflix’s 2026 announcement also says its “Search by Language” experience can expose accessibility features from the search bar. The practical test remains the title’s information page and the audio menu during playback.

How to turn on audio description

  1. Open Netflix and start the movie or episode.
  2. Open the playback controls. On a phone, tablet or computer, tap or click the screen. On most TVs, streaming players, Blu-ray players and consoles, press the up or down arrow on the remote or controller. On Apple TV, swipe up or press the up arrow.
  3. Select Audio & Subtitles (the wording can vary slightly by device).
  4. In the Audio column, choose a track such as English – Audio Description, or the equivalent label in another language.
  5. Close the menu and resume playback.

The languages shown are title-specific. Netflix’s general instructions are in its Audio and subtitle help article. Android users access alternate audio through the playback subtitle/audio control, as described at Netflix Help. Device-specific guidance is available for Google TV, Roku and Xbox.

How to find titles with AD

  • Look for an AD or descriptive-audio badge on the title information page.
  • Use Netflix accessibility or audio-description collections when they appear in your region.
  • Use the search bar’s language/accessibility options where Netflix exposes them.
  • Start playback and check Audio & Subtitles; seeing an audio-description track is the definitive check for that title and episode.

Netflix says accessibility badges are available across web, TV, iOS and Android and are designed to work with screen readers. That matters because accessible playback depends on being able to browse, choose a title and locate the correct track—not only on hearing the narration after playback starts.

How to turn it off

  1. Start the title and open Audio & Subtitles.
  2. Select the ordinary track, such as English [Original], instead of the track containing “Audio Description.”
  3. Resume playback.

If AD keeps returning, a device-level accessibility setting may be selecting it. Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance says to check:

Audio description, subtitles, captions and screen readers are different

Feature What it provides Primary audience
Audio description Spoken descriptions of visual actions, expressions, settings and transitions Blind and low-vision viewers
Subtitles Written dialogue, commonly translated into another language Viewers who need translated dialogue or watch without sound
Closed captions or SDH Dialogue plus relevant sound information such as alarms, music or sound effects Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers
Screen reader Reads interface text, buttons and controls People navigating apps and websites with limited or no vision

AD is therefore not “subtitles for blind people,” and it is not a screen reader. A screen reader may help you find Netflix’s controls; AD describes the program itself.

What audio description cannot do

  • It cannot describe everything. Narration must fit around speech, music, effects and pacing.
  • It is not universal. A Netflix subscription does not guarantee AD for every title, language, season, episode or region.
  • It is not automatically an audiobook. Listening away from a screen can be a useful secondary use, but the feature is designed first for access to visual storytelling.
  • It is not necessarily AI-generated. Netflix’s standard catalog should not be labeled AI narration without title-specific evidence. Netflix has discussed training writers to produce high-quality AD; automated and user-customized description remain separate research areas, including work described at arXiv.

Descriptions are written and recorded by a separate production team. Wording and emphasis can differ by language and market, and the narration may interpret only observable, story-relevant details without revealing future events.

Troubleshooting common problems

“I cannot find Audio Description.”

  1. Check the title page for an AD badge.
  2. Start the exact season and episode, then inspect Audio & Subtitles.
  3. Try another known AD title to distinguish a catalog limitation from a device problem.
  4. Check whether the desired language is available in your region.
  5. Update the app or try Netflix in a current browser or another supported device.
  6. If a documented accessibility feature appears to be missing, contact Netflix through its accessibility feedback and support options.

“Narration is on every show.”

Select the ordinary audio track and inspect the device’s accessibility settings, especially on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad. A saved Netflix choice and a device-level setting can interact.

“One episode has AD but the next does not.”

Netflix explicitly warns that descriptive audio may not exist for every season or episode. Treat episode-level coverage as a catalog limitation unless other titles also fail.

“The descriptions are too brief.”

AD is intentionally constrained by available pauses and competing soundtrack elements. It prioritizes plot-critical visual information instead of providing a continuous visual transcript.

Who benefits?

Audio description is primarily for blind and low-vision viewers, including people whose usable sight changes with lighting, fatigue, illness or surroundings. It can also help someone follow a program while listening rather than watching closely, or support language practice, but those are secondary uses. The central purpose is equal access to visual storytelling.
