NASA+ is real, free and ad-free—but it did not debut in 2026. NASA launched its official on-demand streaming service on November 8, 2023. It combines live mission coverage with documentaries, original series, children’s programming, Spanish-language content and archival NASA material, available through NASA’s website and supported devices.

What NASA+ offers
Live missions and launches
NASA+ carries live coverage of selected launches, missions, experiments, astronaut activities and other agency events. Live availability follows NASA’s published schedule, so the service is not a permanent live feed of every NASA operation.
Documentaries and original series
The catalog includes mission documentaries, original NASA series and programs related to the James Webb Space Telescope. NASA’s launch announcement highlighted programming about Webb imagery, the return of an asteroid sample and the experiences of Black NASA astronauts in The Color of Space.

Family and Spanish-language programming
Children’s animated science programs explain planets and the universe in an accessible format. NASA also identifies Spanish-language programming among the service’s offerings.
Historical footage and visual programming
A NASA launch article promoted access to approximately 65 years of classic footage. That is NASA’s promotional description of the archive, not a guarantee that every historical broadcast is currently searchable or available on demand. NASA+ also features high-definition cosmic imagery paired with music and other non-live viewing.

How to watch NASA+
On a computer
- Open NASA’s NASA+ website or the Ways to Watch page.
- Choose a live event, featured program, series or documentary.
- Play the video in a supported web browser.
On a phone or tablet
Install the official NASA App on iOS or Android. NASA says the app includes NASA+ alongside NASA news, images, podcasts, mission information and interactive features. The NASA App page lists current platforms; Apple device support is also documented in the App Store listing.

On a television
NASA currently lists Roku, Apple TV, Google/Android TV and Amazon Fire TV. Open the relevant app store, install or update the NASA App, and look for NASA+ content. Menu names and availability can differ by device model, operating-system version and country.
NASA announced on July 23, 2026, that NASA+ programming was coming to Fire TV Channels. Fire TV viewers may therefore encounter NASA content through the NASA App, Fire TV Channels or both, depending on the device and rollout. See NASA’s Fire TV announcement for that distribution update.

What “free” means
NASA says NASA+ has no subscription fee and no conventional advertising on the direct NASA service. Free programming does not make the surrounding technology free: internet access, mobile data, a compatible television or a streaming device can cost money. NASA also warns that third-party streaming access may involve equipment purchases or platform fees.
A device or app-store account may be required by the platform you use. NASA’s statements establish that no paid NASA+ subscription is required; they do not establish that every device will never request a separate sign-in.

Is NASA+ a replacement for Netflix, NASA TV or YouTube?
NASA+ is best understood as NASA’s official streaming hub, not a general entertainment service. Its subject matter is deliberately narrow, and its live schedule depends on NASA’s missions. It is also not necessarily the only place NASA video appears: NASA distributes programming through its own website and app, while selected NASA+ content has appeared through third-party outlets such as Prime Video, as described in NASA’s Prime Video announcement.
The service does not promise every NASA video, every historical broadcast or every launch on demand. Catalog depth and program rights can vary.
Who should use it?
- Launch fans: Check the live schedule for mission coverage, then use on-demand programs between events.
- James Webb enthusiasts: Look for documentaries and image-focused science programs.
- Families and educators: Children’s shows and explainers provide NASA-focused educational viewing without a subscription.
- History viewers: Browse classic footage, while remembering that the promoted archive figure does not mean every item is available.
- Spanish-speaking viewers: NASA identifies Spanish-language programming as part of NASA+.
Do you need to buy a streaming device?
Usually not. If you already have a computer, phone, tablet, supported smart-TV platform or compatible streaming player, you can watch without buying dedicated hardware.
A separate player is useful mainly for an older television. Roku’s official player page lists the Streaming Stick at $29.99, Streaming Stick Plus at $39.99, Streaming Stick 4K at $49.99 and Roku Ultra at $99.99 when observed in August 2026; prices and promotions can change. Buying any device solely for NASA+ is optional, not a requirement.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The NASA+ page will not load: Try the main NASA website, another supported browser or the NASA App.
- The app is missing from a television’s store: Check the device model, country and operating-system requirements, then use a browser or mobile device as a fallback.
- Video will not play: Check your connection, update the browser or app, disable extensions that interfere with playback and retry.
- No live event is showing: Live programming is schedule-dependent; on-demand programs may still be available.
- You see promotions around the video: NASA’s ad-free claim applies to its direct service, while a commercial device interface can display its own promotional material.
Availability outside the United States
NASA promotes broad access, but the cited pages do not provide a complete country-by-country availability list. App support, individual programs and platform access may therefore differ by region. Do not assume that an identical catalog or every listed device is available while traveling.
