A current public directory lists more than 2,200 category codes—not 76,000 verified browse pages. To try one, open https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/5505 in a browser; it leads to the U.S. Psychological Thrillers category. These codes make niche browsing easier. They do not unlock titles outside your country, plan, or profile permissions.
What the 76,000 figure does—and does not—tell you
Netflix uses many specific categories and themed collections, but the exact “76,000 micro-genres” figure is not established by the Netflix sources available here. Netflix does not document that number as a count of publicly accessible category pages. A specialist directory currently catalogs more than 2,200 codes, though its list may include regional, stale, duplicate, or inaccessible entries. See the directory and its explanation of Netflix category IDs.
Several different things can be conflated in a large headline number: Netflix’s internal classifications, public category pages, the number of titles assigned to overlapping categories, and the categories available in a particular country. They are not interchangeable. One title can appear in multiple collections, and category pages and their contents can change.
What Netflix category codes are
Often called secret, genre, or hidden-category codes, these numbers are identifiers in Netflix browse-page URLs. They are shortcuts to category pages, not passwords or hacks. A code can make a narrow collection easier to reach than scrolling through the home screen, but it does not add movies to Netflix, bypass parental controls, or remove plan and licensing restrictions.

Netflix’s U.S. pages show examples such as Thrillers (8933), Psychological Thrillers (5505), Reality, Variety & Talk Shows (2070390), and Hollywood Blockbuster Movies (90139). Netflix’s home-screen ordering remains personalized; the code is a more direct route to a category, not a way to turn off personalization. Netflix says recommendations and search results can reflect viewing behavior, title information, language preferences, device, and time of day (Netflix’s explanation of recommendations).
How to open a category in a browser
- Open a modern browser such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge, and sign in to Netflix.
- Enter https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/CODE in the address bar, replacing CODE with the category number.
- Press Enter. For example, use https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/5505 for Psychological Thrillers.
- Choose a title from the results. The page shows what is currently available to your account for that category.
The Psychological Thrillers page is also exposed on Netflix’s U.S. site at this category URL. The exact titles and ordering you see can differ by country, profile, and plan.

Useful category codes to try
These common codes are starting points, not a promise that every title or category will appear in every account. The links use Netflix’s standard browse URL pattern; results depend on your location and account.
| Category | Code | Direct URL |
|---|---|---|
| Action & Adventure | 1365 | Open category |
| Comedies | 6548 | Open category |
| Dramas | 5763 | Open category |
| Horror Movies | 8711 | Open category |
| Sci-Fi & Fantasy | 1492 | Open category |
| Documentaries | 6839 | Open category |
| Thrillers | 8933 | Open category |
| TV Shows | 83 | Open category |
| Anime | 7424 | Open category |
| Psychological Thrillers | 5505 | Open category |
| Martial Arts Movies | 8985 | Open category |
| Classic Action & Adventure | 46576 | Open category |
Examples including 1365, 46576, 8985, and 5505 also appear in the What’s on Netflix category-code directory. That directory and Netflix Genre Codes can help you search by name instead of memorizing numbers. Both are third-party resources, not Netflix services, and entries can become outdated.

Find codes without memorizing them
- Use a searchable directory. Search for a phrase such as “classic westerns” or “foreign crime films,” then test the category URL while signed in. A directory’s listing does not guarantee the page is active or populated in your region.
- Use Netflix search for a concept or title. Netflix supports searches for genres, titles, names, languages, and other terms. Its guidance is at Search and browse Netflix.
- Bookmark the categories you actually use. Save direct URLs in browser folders such as “thrillers,” “documentaries,” or “family.” This avoids keeping a long code list and makes it easy to revisit a useful page.
- Check Netflix’s own category navigation. Netflix announced a personalized Category Hub in 2022 as a place to browse genres and curated collections; its availability and presentation can vary by device and account (Netflix’s Category Hub announcement).
For language-specific viewing, Netflix’s regular search can also help locate titles by audio language, original language, subtitles, or audio description, according to its search guidance.
Why a code can show few or no titles
- Your country has a different catalog. A U.S. category page may show a different selection—or fewer results—elsewhere. A code opens a category route; it does not make a title licensed in every market.
- The category may be narrow or out of date. Some collections are highly specific, and categories can be renamed, merged, emptied, or removed as Netflix changes its catalog and navigation.
- Your profile may restrict results. Kids settings, maturity limits, and language preferences can affect what appears. Netflix explains profile controls in its maturity settings guidance and search help.
- Your plan may not include a title. Netflix says some titles can appear locked on an ad-supported plan because of licensing restrictions; the category code does not bypass those locks (Netflix’s explanation of locked titles).
- The directory entry may be wrong. Third-party lists are useful indexes, not authoritative guarantees that each code still works for every viewer.
If a page is empty, try the broader category, check Netflix’s ordinary search, and confirm you are signed into the intended profile. A category can be a valid route while yielding different results from another country or profile.

Using a category page when you watch on a TV
The browser URL is the dependable method described here; Netflix does not document numeric category codes as a guaranteed feature in every TV or mobile app. If a direct link does not open in your television’s Netflix app:
- Open the category link on a phone or computer browser.
- Note the titles you want, or add available titles to My List.
- On the TV, search for those titles in Netflix and play them from the app.
Netflix’s official search guidance covers normal searching, rather than promising that every app supports category-number entry.
