Hands-On: Roku Streaming Stick Plus (2025) — Small, Simple 4K Streaming With a Dolby Vision Catch

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2025 Roku Streaming Stick Plus (model 3830R) is a compact, straightforward way to add 4K streaming to a TV, and it is most compelling at the $39.99 promotional price shown on Roku’s U.S. site on August 18, 2026. It supports 4K and HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, but not Dolby Vision; it also lacks Ethernet and a power adapter in the box. Choose it for simple Roku navigation and affordable 4K. Step up to Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K if Dolby Vision or stronger wireless hardware matters to you.

What is the 2025 Roku Streaming Stick Plus?

This is Roku’s 2025 Streaming Stick Plus, model 3830R—not the older Streaming Stick+ models, including model 3810, and not the discontinued Roku Express 4K+. Roku says the stick is its updated comparable option for the Express 4K+. Unlike that set-top box, the Plus plugs directly into the TV’s HDMI port. The naming is easy to mix up, so check the model number when shopping used or comparing listings. Roku’s product page identifies the current model; its 2025 Form 10-K places it in the 2025 product lineup.

What comes in the box, and how does it fit?

The stick measures 3.7 × 0.80 × 0.45 inches and weighs 0.90 ounces (26 grams). The box includes the player, a Voice Remote with TV power, volume and mute controls, two pre-installed AAA batteries, and a USB-C-to-USB-A power cable. It does not include a power brick or HDMI extender.

The slim, direct-plug design keeps the player behind the TV and is intended to avoid blocking neighboring HDMI ports. That is a useful goal, not a guarantee: port spacing, a recessed socket, a downward-facing port, or a flush wall mount can make the fit awkward. Thurrott praised the small form factor, while Tech Advisor found the fit tight on one television and noted the missing extender. Those are specific test observations, not a defect established for every TV. If the stick will not sit comfortably, use an HDMI extension solution rather than forcing the connector. Thurrott’s hands-on and Tech Advisor’s review describe those fit considerations.

Setup, power and quick fixes

Roku specifies USB-C power at 5V/1A and says typical power use during 4K UHD streaming is about 2.5 watts. The supplied cable lets you try a TV USB port, but whether that port provides reliable power depends on the television. Use a suitable USB power adapter if the stick reports low power or repeatedly restarts.

  1. Plug the stick into an available HDMI port and connect the included USB-C-to-USB-A cable.
  2. Connect the cable to the TV’s USB port or to a suitable wall adapter. Do not force a tight HDMI fit.
  3. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the stick.
  4. Pair the remote if prompted, connect to Wi-Fi, and let software updates finish.
  5. Sign in to or create a Roku account, then add or reinstall the streaming apps you use.
  6. Follow the on-screen steps to configure TV power and volume control.
  • No picture: Check that the TV is on the correct HDMI input, reseat the stick, and try another HDMI port.
  • Low-power warning or repeated restarts: Switch from the TV’s USB port to a USB adapter capable of the specified 5V/1A input.
  • Remote will not pair: Reseat or replace its batteries, restart the stick, and follow the on-screen pairing prompt.
  • Wi-Fi drops: Test the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks separately; try the more reliable band or improve the router’s position.

Tech Advisor describes setup as guiding users through pairing, Wi-Fi, updates, account sign-in and remote control. Roku’s product specifications list dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Picture and sound: capable 4K, but not every premium format

The stick outputs up to 2160p (4K) at 60 frames per second, supports HD output up to 1080p, and can upscale 720p and 1080p video. Supported HDR formats are HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. A 4K/HDR signal requires a compatible TV input with HDCP 2.2. The TV, HDMI path, app, content and subscription tier must also support the format you want: the device alone cannot make HD content 4K or turn an incompatible TV into an HDR display.

Roku does not list Dolby Vision support or advertise Dolby Atmos support for the Plus. Roku lists digital stereo over HDMI and DTS Digital Surround pass-through; Dolby-encoded audio pass-through is not the same as native Atmos support. If your TV and viewing library rely on Dolby Vision, or your home theater requires documented Atmos support, verify the entire device-to-receiver-to-content chain before buying. Roku’s format specifications and Tech Advisor’s review cover the key omissions.

How it performs in everyday use

Hands-on accounts describe the stick as responsive: Thurrott found it capable of 4K/HDR output, and Tech Advisor found startup and home-screen navigation sufficiently quick. Roku does not disclose the processor in the cited coverage, and those reviews do not provide controlled boot-time, app-launch, bitrate, thermal or Wi-Fi-throughput measurements. Treat “responsive” as a qualitative impression, not a measured speed claim. Thurrott also reported correct automatic configuration of 4K, HDR10 and audio in its test setup; another TV or receiver may behave differently.

The wireless connection is dual-band Wi-Fi, identified by Thurrott as Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). There is no Ethernet port. That makes the Plus a less suitable choice for a room with unreliable wireless coverage or for anyone who requires wired networking; improving router placement or choosing an Ethernet-capable device may be a better fix than expecting this stick to solve a difficult network.

Remote and Roku interface

Remote controls

The Voice Remote supports voice search and includes TV power, volume and mute controls. Hands-on coverage reports four shortcut buttons for Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+ and Prime Video, plus a star button for contextual options and settings. The prominent main buttons can be easier to spot and press than smaller, crowded remotes, although the side-mounted volume and mute buttons are relatively small. TV-control compatibility covers most TVs, not necessarily every television or audio device. Thurrott reported occasional line-of-sight trouble in its setup with the stick directly behind the TV; that is a test-specific observation. Tech Advisor also notes that the Roku mobile app can act as a remote.

Home screen, free content and advertising

Roku’s menu-and-tile home screen puts installed apps in clear view, while voice search reduces the need to type. Roku also promotes The Roku Channel, which its product page says includes free movies, shows and more than 500 live channels. Free programming may be ad-supported; other content can require a subscription, rental or purchase, and app and content availability varies by country.

Roku Ultra, Ultimate Streaming Player - 4K Streaming Device for TV
  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

The interface is not ad-free. Thurrott observed ads on the home screen and screensaver; Tech Advisor also saw home-screen advertising and criticized the personalization of “What to Watch” and “Continue Watching.” Both impressions describe the reviewers’ experience, and Roku can change its interface and ad placements with software updates. Roku’s interface may suit viewers who want prominent app shortcuts, but those who dislike promotional content on a streaming device should factor that into the purchase.

  2. Select Remotes & devices, then Wireless headphones.

Smart-home compatibility and ecosystem

Roku lists compatibility with Roku Smart Home, Apple AirPlay and HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home. That establishes ecosystem compatibility, not comprehensive control of every connected device. Tech Advisor characterizes Roku’s integrations as more limited than Google TV’s broader smart-home controls, particularly for third-party lights, thermostats and other devices. Choose based on the control features you actually use, not simply whether a platform name appears on a compatibility list.

Who should buy the Streaming Stick Plus?

  • Good fit: A 4K TV with a sluggish built-in interface; a secondary, guest-room or travel TV; a household that already likes Roku; or a buyer who wants uncomplicated 4K/HDR10-family streaming without paying for premium hardware.
  • Look elsewhere: Dolby Vision viewers, home-theater users who require confirmed Atmos support, households that need Ethernet, or viewers in a difficult Wi-Fi location who want newer wireless hardware.
  • Check the TV first: A recessed or hard-to-reach HDMI port can undermine the direct-plug convenience, and an HD-only TV may be better served by the less expensive HD Roku Streaming Stick.
  • Consider your preferences: Home-screen advertising and limited smart-home control may matter more to some buyers than Roku’s simple navigation.
